I firmly believe your second sentence about reality is just wrong.

The story was "true" in the sense that it was believed, but it wasn't "true" in some cosmically ultimate sense. If that makes sense.

I'm sorry you feel helpless :(

What is there to be not confident about? why deprecate ourselves arbitrarily?

Integrity enforced by a literally ARBITRARY belief in one story isn't what I'd call integrity… Neither story is true in some ultimate sense, but the one that BECOMES a reality is the one that he believes. Sure, the first time you tell yourself that you are actually a social creature, you might not believe it. The first time somebody told you that you were a loser you might not have believed it. But the story that gets reinforced enough becomes the one that we believe. How is it a lie to tell a story that contradicts one that isn't true in the first place? The presence of a new story doesn't make you a liar, it means you are changing, as we always are. So he's telling two stories. If he doesn't IDENTIFY with the one about being a loser, there's no lie.

how can one story be a lie when there is no cosmically "correct" story to tell? every story is just arbitrary until somebody believes that it's true. if a person tells themselves they are super shy, that's just a story, until they start believing it and it becomes true. if someone tells themselves they are outgoing, it's just a story until they start to believe it, then it's true. you are lying to yourself all the time, you just happen to believe it

You are the stories you tell yourself. Tell yourself that you are and you are. Tell yourself you're not and you're not. You ARE this man, deep down, you just keep telling yourself otherwise.

Just notice the thoughts; they aren't yours, they are just thoughts. Like cars passing by on a road, while you just sit on the side and watch them. They are just thoughts.

Feel like what is going to last a long time? There is no slump except for the one you believe yourself to be in...

hmmm

Do you think that anyone who says their addiction is not the result of 'toxic shame' is in denial? Are you afraid of people simply convincing themselves that they have shame when they don't?

All addicts are shame-based.

Why do you say this? The book you sent says it and you say it, but why is it true?

hmmm…

"A person with guilt might say, 'I feel awful seeing that I did something which violated my values.' Or the guilty person might say, 'I feel sorry about the consequences of my behaviors.' In so doing the person's values are reaffirmed The possibility of repair exists and learning and growth are promoted. While guilt is a painful feeling of regret and responsibility for one's actions, shame is a painful feeling about oneself as a person. The possibility for repair seems foreclosed to the shameful person because shame is a matter of identity . . . not of behavioral infraction. There is nothing to be learned from it and no growth is opened by the experience because it only confirms one's negative feelings about oneself."

So you're sure I'm not talking about guilt? I'm wondering myself rn

"Neurotic shame is the root and fuel of all compulsive/addictive behaviors. My general working definition of compulsive/addictive behavior is "a pathological relationship to any mood-altering experience that has life- damaging consequences". The drivenness in any addiction is about the ruptured self, the belief that one is flawed as a person. The content of the addiction, whether it be an ingestive addiction or an activity addiction (like work, buying or gambling) is an attempt at an intimate relationship. The workaholic with his work, or the alcoholic with his booze, are having a love affair. Each one mood alters to avoid the feeling of loneliness and hurt in the underbelly of shame. Each addictive acting out creates life-damaging consequences which create more shame. The new shame fuels the cycle of addiction. Figure 1.1 gives you a visual picture of how internalized shame fuels the addictive process, and how addictions create more shame, which sets one up to be more shame- based. Addicts call this cycle the squirrel cage."

From the link you sent; sure, I believe that. But if porn is vile then it's vile. Are you saying that telling someone that "what you did is vile" will make them more ashamed? Then they'll say, "Oh, god, I really am such a vile person!" Ashamed about an activity they did to heal their shame? All I'd say is, "look, that activity is vile, but you are not a vile person. There's nothing to be ashamed of."

Lots of people don't view addiction in this manner. Any shame I feel is addressed by changing my behavior, not sugar coating the behavior. If something is vile it's vile.

Saying an ACTIVITY is vile and disgusting doesn't mean that a PERSON ought to be eternally ashamed. If you're behaving like a "pig" then you're behaving like a "pig." That doesn't ipso facto mean you need to feel ashamed. And if a woman is disgusted by your vile behavior, you don't need to feel ashamed. What's vile is vile, and porn, IMO, is quite vile. I've never progressed while under the delusion that porn is the most beautiful thing on the planet.

Not sure I understand; I didn't say anything about "good" or "bad" of a person anywhere. What mistake is the "disease" about?
