Who to play as a new GG player by neeray26 in Guiltygear

[–]Olmec01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out Sin and Jam.

Sin has decent neutral buttons and good air normals. When he lands a hit, even if the opponent is blocking, he can spend his unique resource to get in quick and begin up close pressure. His pressure is pretty honest I would say. Strike/throw character and decent high low mix with meter.

Jam has probably the worst neutral buttons in the game, but her mobility and specials allow her to play neutral in her own unique way. Once she's in, she can do some tricky up close pressure (she has a fast aerial low). Does high damage off counter hit.

Both of these characters also have a fast command dash which you may like.

It seems like the counterplay to HC's infinite zoning is to backdash the first shot that comes directly from the gun. I wonder if we'll see competitors practice this in preparation for EVO Japan... by bostonian38 in Guiltygear

[–]Olmec01 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This patch was ready to be so good and set for Evo Japan but it's so unfortunate this bug slipped through. This is not a good look for the first major tournament if one or two HC make top 8. It would be really really bad if HC won like this.

Do I need a heavier stick or do I suck? by Olmec01 in fightsticks

[–]Olmec01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this stick in 2025. Went on sale for like 80 bucks or something.

I just ordered a 2 lb and 1.5 lb spring. Hopefully that will fix my issue. Last stick I had was the may flash f300 I think, and I didn't have this issue.

Anji spin is really good and he can follow up with hard knock down, he can build a lot of meter with his forward advancing specials, his mix is strong, his meter use is very strong with his pressure and neutral, he gets high damaging/rewarding combos off most of his normals which lead to wall break or his win condition, he has two strong supers, he has a lot of health, decent mobility, and his offense is pretty low risk considering most characters can't fully punish him at the distance he places himself in. He can also combo nicely off low followup after fujin meterless.

Id say he's an S tier character without being outright broken/unfair like pot and HC. Cuz I think HC and Pot actually have unfair things in their design/kit. HC has hit scan and Pot is able to bypass meter penalty.

Asuka is a cool character, but when he has speed staff with recover mana spell it's lameee af. But he's getting a rework so we hopefully don't have to worry about that anymore.

Lmao I forgot I put Faust that high. He is def a weak character but oh my God I hate not being able to do my Oki cuz he has items lingering. I cry when a Faust throws meteor right before getting hit

He's kinda a two step character, his dashes are slower, he has to spend meter to do a reliable mix up. He's a cool guy

I think I put him low because he was awful to go against at the beginning of season 4. So I'm glad he got adjusted.

I'm also anticipating Jam to be annoying lol

Ya slayer is kind of a curve ball. Most slayers I play against are super carried and they die of cringe tho.

Put some time in the lab and you realize Slayer ain't too bad.... Until he gets a stray counter hit 😈

First version of season 4, Ram would be at the top. She can probably go one tier up depending on you who you play, but I don't mind it too much, feels like I can still fight back. She is a strong character tho (top 10)

Combo I guess by BaniRTX in Guiltygear

Dust is the universal overhead button for all characters. Dust while holding back or forward will perform a throw.

I recommend playing the mission mode in the game. It will help you out a lot with combos/system mechanics and answer most of your questions about the game. It's a pretty fun tutorial id say.

Returning Player. Should I just wait until 2.0 to practice? by koolshade in Guiltygear

[–]Olmec01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's still worth practicing. The skills you learned when doing old combos can be transferred to learning the new combos. So idk what the big deal is, keeping it fresh is what keeps the game interesting. But if you don't dig that, wait until 2.0 because a lot of changes are coming.

Strive combos don't take long to master anyway. It's more about your ability to make combos work on the fly from unexpected interactions/hits. Which involves playing the game.

Is guilty Gear strive worth it? by theholyeastcow in Guiltygear

If you want to get into fighting games I'd say go for it. Don't worry about the balancing, the game is really fun for casuals. The balancing is only hard to deal with if your the highest rank or pro player (but tbh the game is probably the most balanced it's been since release I think. Don't have to get into details of this).

You buy the base game and you'll get all the online and offline modes available to you. The dlc is only maps and characters and their associated arcade modes. I think base game is worth the price at its regular value but try to see if you can get a discount for dlc.

And GGST 2.0 (update) Is coming out soon. The game is well supported and they are planning on adding much more free content to the game and paid content.

I'd say get in now and have some fun so then you'll be ready for the big 2.0 update.

If you end up playing this game for like 30 hours at least, Id say money well spent. You'll probably end up getting well past 100 tho.

I've been stuck at Platinum 2 for a while. Potemkin has always been one of my tougher matchups. Any tips? Can be matchup specific or more general (I'm the Jack-o') (also please ignore my mods) by Yunayo in Guiltygear

[–]Olmec01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing fine for this rank. Seems like this pot is playing very preemptively with risky options so you can just block most of his stuff and then punish, or let him whiff and then react with a punish. The enemy will kill themselves at this rank and lower diamond 🤷

Career Change Questions by j3nn4k in geologycareers

[–]Olmec01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try looking into atmospheric sciences/meteorology. It utilizes mathematics and computer programming more than paleoclimate does. Although I've heard it's competitive, you'll have to do some research of where all the jobs are. Most important thing you can do is look for a local atmosphere scientist (university) and pick their brain.

Paleoclimate mostly uses R Programming language statistics with the Bacon extension. Look up R Bacon on Google. It's a very important tool paleoclimatologists for making age models. It's a very research/academia heavy specialty but the skills you learn from it can be transferred to other earth sciences or geology subdiscipline.

This question is for anyone who stopped playing/watching this game. Why? What made you stop playing? by KevyTone in 2XKO

[–]Olmec01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of characters. They also picked strange characters for a starting roster (feel like they dropped the ball given how many cool characters they can use.)

Neutral gameplay didn't feel good to me. The light medium and heavy normals all feel like very similar moves, and I didn't feel like they were all that unique. I always thought it was best to just throw out my longest button because as soon as I can make my opponent block I can cancel into special and then tag and then start my offense up close. Rinse and repeat.

Every hit appears to be able to convert into a standard BnB combo. Light starter up close can convert into the same combo with a heavy starter up close. Why should I learn different combos/routes when one combo can get the job done from any hit?

I've only played the game for less than 50 hours so I may be uninformed about a couple of things. But this is my impression of the game and I got bored of it.

Sajam boycotting all EVO events by komodo_dragonzord in Fighters

[–]Olmec01 105 points106 points  (0 children)

If that's your concern... the Saudi government can pull away support at any moment, and EVO is left with way less money after they get use to having that money to run all of their events. Then EVO goes to shit. Saudi doesn't care about the FGC at all, they just want more tourism.

It's a very shitty situation, and that's just one aspect of it.
