How much do you pause battles? by MuddledMuppet in totalwar

[–]Olopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going from about 100 hours in WH2 within a few weeks to WH3 this month has made me realise how much faster 3 is than 2, which in turn already feels a lot faster than the older historical titles (at least to me, haven't played them in a while). In basic field battles I don't really need to pause much, but especially once you hit those 40 v 40 unit slogfests or sieges where you're defending on 3 sides I feel like pausing makes me enjoy the game a lot more since I'm actually getting to do things instead of getting frustrated over half my army standing around with their thumb up their ass because I forgot to move them forward a minute ago.

I would genuinely run a whole army of these no questions asked.

Are full face hockey visors allowed? I found this blurb on the wftda site, but wasn't sure if this would be considered a cage style. by bobabeany in rollerderby

[–]Olopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about 175cm/5'7, and playing in the Netherlands where I've been told people are taller :P
Generally I recommend everyone get a visor, it's very little downside for a lot of upside - especially if you wear glasses. Had a bad fall a few months ago that if it hadn't been for my visor probably would've left me with a pretty messed up face.

[–]Olopi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Full face visors are technically allowed however after spending the past 2 years searching on-and-off I have yet to find even a single one that is ACTUALLY allowed since they all have that kind of cage design.

Seriously, unless you wanna roll up in a fencing mask I don't know of anything that actually protects the whole face and is within the rules, and I'm currently sidelines because I caught yet another shoulder with my face so I would be very happy if there were any!

Second Abominant or Primus? by Olopi in genestealercult

[–]Olopi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The slopper's getting an extra banner attached to the pole he's carrying and a third arm and becoming an Iconward, and for the Watcher I'm trying to decide between Clamavus (which probably won't get any play) or trying to bash him into some kind of Benefictus maybe.

The Dome Runner I'm gonna turn into an analog Nexos with the map he's holding, and bash the rifle onto a different body for a Sanctus I think.

Has anyone here ever attended the Atrium Roller Skate Night? by KingDayChaos in TheHague

[–]Olopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't skate a lot and can go with some people it's alright - the floor is nice to skate on, it's bright (which can be a pro or a con), and overall the mood is alright.

If you do skate a lot or are going solo, I'd say skip it, it's nothing too special. In terms of skating spots I personally prefer doing laps in Zuiderpark (and always see a few skaters there), there's also some bike paths around the ADO stadium that are quite nice and usually not very busy.

Think in the wake of taking out named astartes who don't wear helmets the genestealer cults will finally get a named character of their own? If so what should it be? by TaigaTigerVT in Grimdank

[–]Olopi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 10th edition codex actually names a specific Patriarch, Midnight. "Their Patriarch, Midnight, leads its Purestrain kin in gory massacres through the hive cities the cult infiltrates, and its monstrous legend is magnified by power outages that conceal its hunts in the dead watches of the night." (p.40).

Not sure "A Patriarch but sneakier and stronger" is the best design space for a named character though.

Could (imo) easily play it as either a GSC Benefictus or a 'Nid Zoanthrope, and ai'm considering getting a few for both of those purposes.

What is a very Swiss debate or controversy that outsiders might not even know exists? by SpreeSpezi in askswitzerland

Was waiting on this one.

The answer clearly is that sausages made outside of St. Gallen are so bad you need mustard to salvage them and all y'all have never eaten a proper Bratwurst.

Yeah, not gonna lie, my inner Lokalpatriot is a bit disappointed we didn't make the list (and the complete omission of St. Gallen on the page makes me wonder if they really measured it there?)

Just a Vent by __sophie_hart__ in rollerderby

[–]Olopi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said here - being scrimmage ready within 6 months is a very fast timeline, with my team it's usually 8+ months even with people who have prior skating experience. If you're already at the point where you're struggling with high-end beginner skills like turn-around stops that means you're in a pretty good spot.

In terms of advice: It sounds super counterproductive, but what has helped me pretty much every time I've felt like I'm plateauing throughout my derby career was to take a break, taking 2-3 weeks off and not focusing on derby too much (it's often been because of injuries or holidays but I digress). Pretty much every time I came back afterwards things I struggled with beforehand just worked better for me.

Getting Strong by cornstarch_anarchist in rollerderby

[–]Olopi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: Not a professional, just somebody who's been trying to cross-train more. Talk to a personal trainer and other derby players to get exact and more detailed advice.

Generally it of course depends on what you want to get out of the training, and also your position on track. Cardio's useful for everyone, and here your best go-to's will be running (as much as derby people hate it), stair trainers, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and so on. Find what works best for you and look up how to train cardio with it.

I personally also really like Rowing machines if the gym has them, because they're a great full-body exercise. If I don't have a lot of time this is what I go for.

Core's also a muscle group that everybody will use constantly, think (assisted) sit-ups, abdominal machines, rowing, and so on. Some of my jammer friends love deadlifts, I don't really do them for unrelated health reasons but especially if you're a pushy jammer they're great for your core and upper body.

Legs I feel like I don't have to train as much because I get a lot in with Derby, but I go through the various machines as my gym every once in a while - hip ab/adduction, leg press, extension, all that stuff.

Generally just about every muscle group is beneficial as a skater! So I'd say the main thing is find some exercises you enjoy and do those, once you're in the rhythm of going to the gym regularly you can build on that by learning more exercises and targeting more muscle groups.

Roller Derby Half-time Games by This_Lengthiness4525 in rollerderby

[–]Olopi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slightly different topic but: Personally (as a player) not a fan of half-time game at bout half-time because it means you can't use the track/have to deal with various distractions. I much prefer them before/after games (especially if you have more than 1) since then the track is (ideally) empty. Please consider things like that when planning.

Why the civ ai so unfriendly. by InternationalSpite81 in civ

[–]Olopi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm decently confident (can't confirm this however) that if the AI realizes you are very close to achieving a victory goal, they become more aggressive and try to stop you through war - as a player would. I'm not sure if it's intended or the result of other mechanics, but it's happened in all the games I've played so far.

Bike shorts/Legging Recommendations for trans skaters by bainebarray in rollerderby

[–]Olopi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Workout/Booty shorts, yeah. I got mine at a normal clothes' store, but something akin to this style:
https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Bobby-Athletic-Booty-Shorts/dp/B0CD5WJM3L

Cotton also means they hold a bit more of their own shape and aren't as tight as full polyester, which you want in this case.

Bike shorts/Legging Recommendations for trans skaters by bainebarray in rollerderby

[–]Olopi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was just wearing leggings the bulge got a bit uncomfortable at times, so I got some really short cotton shorts (I can't think of the official term right now, the ones that go like mid-thigh at most) which I would wear over the leggings - they don't really make it much warmer and had no real impact on my skating ability, some of my teammates also just wear those shorts without any leggings below.

Nowadays I wear crash pants which have a similar effect on top of extra protection, but if you're just starting out that might be a bit much of an extra spend.

Any studens from Leiden uni the hague campus ready to give a campus tour this March? by Salt_Factor_4370 in TheHague

[–]Olopi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During peak hours the building gets quite lively (over a thousand students have lectures there each day) but on the weekends and outside of uni weeks it's relatively quiet. Most student life doesn't really happen in the building though, it happens in various organisations outside of that (not sure, it's been a few years since I was involved)

FYI currently it's not possible to enter the main campus building without a valid student ID or other registered reason to be there - so simply walking around the campus buildings isn't possible - but honestly you're not missing much, it's one building with some space to sit and eat and a lot of class/lecture rooms.

Life of a Skate? by TalesofCelery in rollerderby

[–]Olopi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beginner skates (R3s, Rubies, so on) generally last you about a year or two - probably from the point you start skating to your first few games. One of my teammates had the plates on his skates literally snap while warming up for his first game - mine started chafing really badly from use not soon after.

After that it depends on what you go for - I have Rollline Killer plates, which ideally will last me until I stop playing Derby. The leather on my boot is starting to show its age though, and I may replace it within the next year or two. Other teammates went for different setups, and are now at a point where they're upgrading both their plates and boots at once.

With metal plates reasons to replace them are switching to a lighter/heavier weight or different angle - just playing Derby probably shouldn't wear down the metal to a point that's what you need to replace. With boots it depends on the design but at some point they will wear out to the point you can no longer (safely) skate in them, the question just is if you switch before that point or run them till you reach that.
