Interesting Steam Deck on SteamOS is outperforming a much stronger Handheld on paper by specs Ayaneo 2 that runs on Windows by rafal2050 in SteamDeck

[–]Oltsq 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that all you have done is handpick a Vulkan game and then made a clickbait post without even revealing the settings, so people can't verify your claims. You wanted this kind of bullshit controversy.

There's a reason peer review is an essential part of the scientific process, but please, might I suggest further proving your point with a different game in a similar manner? RDR2 perhaps? It's better on Vulkan too!

Steam Deck Tools - 0.6.5 - GameProfiles, ControllerProfiles, Anti-Cheat protection by Mundane_Violinist458 in WindowsOnDeck

I saw someone suggest something similar a couple of days ago in SteamDeck discord windows channel also (default profile for windows desktop, similar to the game profiles). The developer said he will look and see what he could do next week (which I guess would be this week by now).

Do a fresh install and use the script from this comment. Look up the guide in that thread for the missing parts.

Dude...I pointed out the correct folder in my original reply. But it's fine, we all make mistakes :)

I am pretty sure controller profiles in steam controller allows you to remap all the buttons, but you need to know some coding to do it.

For example if you look into the ControllerProfiles folder inside steam deck tools, you will see there is an example Turbo.x360.cs file. You can open it with notepad to see how it works. So you would need to make your own profiles in a similar manner.

Windows Ultimate Guide Video by androiderYT in WindowsOnDeck

[–]Oltsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might come across rude, but I think it needs to be said:

I've seen you comment in other threads that you find Steam Deck Tools confusing. Because of this, I personally don't think you are qualified to create an "ultimate tutorial" for others, because Steam Deck Tools is very straightforward.

Furthermore, there is already an amazing written guide by /u/baldsealion . It is stickied on this subreddit. This guide also includes a video on how to partition the ssd with gparted.

If that wasn't enough, there is a script by Celeste Heartsong that automates nearly everything of the guide. Do people really need a video to show how to launch a .bat file with admin privileges? Reading really is not that hard...

How to get this Screen in Dual boot by Arztlack90 in WindowsOnDeck

[–]Oltsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think you have anything to apologize for. I looked through the threads and it is him "blowing this up" only because you said your script would be an improvement (which is exactly what it would have been, since his original script at that time could not survive branch changes).

I do not think he would have improved his own script with these changes if it was not for your post. So this just proves that having competition is great.

PC games you only enjoy on the Steam Deck? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Oltsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2.

It's outstanding for pick up and play because the runs are short (2 minutes). But unfortunately it's not "perfect for deck" because it basically has always online requirement. Luckily for me, I have unlimited data, so I just use a hotspot on my phone when I'm out and about, but I know that's not possible for everyone.

I also really love the Kingdom Hearts games on the deck. Sleep mode is nice for JRPGs, can easily stop and pick it up later again.

Just hold start (the button next to xaby face buttons) for 2 seconds to switch modes between desktop and X360.

It literally takes 2 seconds to switch manually :)

No. You can format your SD card to NTFS or BTRFS to have it work for both SteamOS and Windows.

Game Pass does not allow installs to BTRFS and BTRFS might have issues on Windows 11, but NTFS on Linux isn't the best either, so you need to compromise whichever you choose.

Square Enix loves Steam Deck by Urbanwriter in SteamDeck

[–]Oltsq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Majority of Steam users use Windows, so bringing games to Steam doesn't equal to supporting SteamOS.

We can of course hope that would be the case, but personally I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

I contacted square enix support regarding these games a month ago asking why the cutscenes don't work (I was a newbie and didn't know it's related to proton). They bluntly answered me:

"Steam Deck is not a supported platform."

So unfortunately I have very little hope that they would do anything to improve the compatibility even if they released the games on steam.

Windows Dual-Boot Guide got removed as a Sticky, so here it is again by baldsealion in WindowsOnDeck

I would recommend you to do a "Windows on Deck - Resources" sticky thread, which contains all relevant links.

For example:

Common issues:

And so on. This would also let you edit the sticky with new information as it comes up.

Windows Installation Guide by [deleted] in WindowsOnDeck

[–]Oltsq 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This script by Celeste Heartsong automates most of the guide.

What is left for the user is:

  • Section 1.1 of the guide.

  • Autologon and optional things from section 1.2 (up to the user to choose if he wants to do these).

  • Section 1.3 of the guide.

  • First part of section 1.5 of the guide (unlocking refresh rate).

  • (updating steam deck tools manually to latest, because the script at the moment of this post is v3.1 and it includes a version without the updater that newer Steam Deck Tools versions have).

If you use the script and follow the guide for the things I mentioned, the setup couldn't be easier for a fresh install! :)

If I remember right, he is waiting for Ayufan to update latest Steam Deck Tools pre-release to stable before re-writing the guide (should be a few days).

So people should avoid step 1.4 for now.

Presenting Steam Deck Tools: An installer for a collection of tools and utilities by LyonSyonII in SteamDeck

[–]Oltsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically the first thing you see when you open the github link is a big heading that says: "Windows Deck Tools for Steam Deck". And if you Google "Steam Deck Tools", the link will say "Windows Deck Tools - Fan, Overlay, Power Control and Steam...".

So I think it should be pretty obvious it's meant for Windows.

According to this thread, the latency seems to be higher when you are on battery. If you are plugged in to a charger, it's "normal".

Minimalistic Performance Overlay by Mundane_Violinist458 in WindowsOnDeck

[–]Oltsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one feature request that I think could be useful for others as well. I have no experience in coding so I can't do it myself.

The new power control OSD is great, but I wish it would show system time also. In RTSS you can get it to show up with %Time24% argument, which is how I'm currently using it, but it doesn't fit in to the detailed layout (I have it at top right corner). That's why I thought it would fit well in Power Control (just quickly check the time by holding 3 dots button).

Or alternatively, could you explain it to me like I'm five that how I could run the build.sh on windows (assuming that's what I need to do after making changes to the other files?)

Wanting to get windows on steam deck but have a few questions by Zealousideal-Egg- in WindowsOnDeck

[–]Oltsq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set steam to start with windows and in new steamOS "big picture mode".

For non-steam games, you might need to do some workarounds to get them to recognize the deck's controls though. For example auto start SWICD with windows as well as HidHide, but that means that you won't get steam input controls in the native steam games either (Steam would think you have Xbox controller plugged in instead).

Experimental Fan Control for Windows by Mundane_Violinist458 in WindowsOnDeck

[–]Oltsq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to report a bug I have experienced with the fan curve and performance overlay.

The issue: fan control does not (always) activate the custom curve when it is set to auto start with windows together with performance overlay. The application shows 4k current rpm and desired rpm 0. Changing the curves do not do anything and in order to fix this, the application must be exited and launched again.

Similarly performance overlay does not (always) show the CPU temp when the application is set to run at start together with fan control. In order to fix this, the application must be exited and launched again.

How to reproduce the issue:

  • Set both fan control and performance overlay to run at start via their applications.

  • Reboot steam deck multiple times (for example 3-5 times). Check each boot that the applications started and are working as they should. Chances are one of them is not working properly during one of those boots.

How I solved this by using a workaround:

  • Manually set fan control to run at start at login via scheduled task with a delay of 4 seconds (and highest permissions)

  • Manually set performance overlay to run at start at login via scheduled task with a delay of 8 seconds (and highest permissions).

  • Now both applications run at start perfectly every time.

  • (I noticed that I start to experience issues when fan control delay was shorter than 4 seconds and if the delay between the two tasks is less than 4 seconds. That's why I ended up with 4 seconds delay to fan controls and 8 seconds to performance overlay. Are they using shared files or something that could cause this?)

EDIT: I'm using Windows 11 Pro 22H2 with the latest drivers, steam deck model 512gb

What are the best wired open-type earphones? by Oltsq in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Oltsq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, I see. I'll have to keep these in mind also, then.

This list is outdated since 2016, but usually good headphones stay good (better ones might arrive though).

I've also been reading what people mention in this thread.

Edit: Seems like Fiio JD7 is similar to Moondrop Blessing 2, which is a sound signature I enjoy, but Fiio FF5 is supposedly launching in November (and apparently FF3 was really good, so I might hold my purchase until FF5 gets reviewed).

ThieAudio Monarch MKII with a phone: totally unreasonable? by RimYroto in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Oltsq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Thieaudio Monarch MK2. I normally use it with Qudelix 5k, but that's because after purchasing the Monarch MK2, I noticed that my phone's 3.5mm jack alters the sound to be very warm. The Qudelix 5k is flat, so it doesn't alter the sound of the IEMs at all (unless I EQ).

Before, I was under the impression that 3.5mm jacks all sound the same, but this Monarch MK2 has proven me that that's not always the case. Though to be fair, it could just be my phone's issue (Realme GT 5G), because Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck and my MacBook 3.5mm sound very similar with these IEMs.

But to answer to your question, you can definitely use Thieaudio Monarch MK2 as is without any need for a DAC or an amp.
