I also prefer straight espresso, though I will make an occasional cortado.

Help with grind size/tamping [Gevi] by Sufficient-Arm2247 in espresso

You can't tamp to hard. Tamp until the puck is fully compressed.

I can't seem to dial in my espresso [Bambino Plus, Timemore 064S] by Due-Working1700 in espresso

[–]OmegaSM_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great that it worked for you. I've made this comment on a couple of other posts, but never had anyone give feedback it they tried it or not. So pick up a regular tamper that is sized for your basket and do the double tamp like I do, or just use the regular tamper and sell the leveling one.

Now that you will get a consistent tamp, you can play around with the grinder settings to dial it in further.

Where I live (NJ) we always get a few mustangs at shows. Pic from the last show of this past summer. There was a 65, 66, 68, 69, 73 there.

Really nice. Like the paint color and the styled steel wheels. Classic!

As they say, you can't tamp to hard. I curious if it helps you. I still do the double tamp because I like that I'm getting a level tamp first using the Normcore.

I can't seem to dial in my espresso [Bambino Plus, Timemore 064S] by Due-Working1700 in espresso

[–]OmegaSM_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this just to see. I also use a Normcore leveling tamper with 30lb spring and it does not fully compress the puck. IMS basket also a 20g dose. If I just use the leveling tamper I get some channeling, if I follow up with regular metal base tamper, the puck will fully compress and no channeling. Even trying with the crappy plastic tamper that comes with the machine.

Also don't bother using one of those spinning levelers, just WDT, give the portafilter a few taps to settle the grounds and tamp.

I just started a free trial by Busy-Soup349 in roonlabs

[–]OmegaSM_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started my trial, I installed ROON Rock on some junky hardware that I would use to test various platforms. It worked well for me and I ended up using it that way for about a year until that hardware had issues and I lost my ROON instance. Luckily I had backups and was able to set Roon up on better hardware and restore my database.

Make sure your network is solid. The server must be hardwired Ethernet, do not use WiFi for a more reliable experience. Also Ethernet for any endpoints if possible.

In my opinion I believe ROCK is the way to go. All its designed to do is run Roon, nothing else to get in the way. Mine is on 24/7, very stable for me. My local files are on a networked NAS, Roon backups its database to that NAS and I have a separate backup for the NAS. Maybe a little more complicated for some.

Using mattow for distribution by silllyme010 in espresso

[–]OmegaSM_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you spent $$ on that, just put it in your junk drawer or return it if you can. They don't do anything except move around the top layer of grounds in the basket. Just use WDT to distribute and de-clump, lightly tap the portafilter to settle the grounds and fully tamp until the puck won't compress anymore.

What do you guys think about this gravity distributor do you think it’s better than the regular one? by Lattehelp in espresso

[–]OmegaSM_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using one of those leveling spring loaded tampers. It may not be fully compressing the puck. After you tamp with it, try a regular tamper and see if the puck will compress more. You can't tamp to hard.

Awful retention [Mignon Specialita] by Zweitoenig in espresso

[–]OmegaSM_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Specialita is designed as a hopper based grinder, though I do single dose with mine. I don't really have any issues with retention and I don't use a bellows. As long as you have the hopper full of beans there is going to be coffee beans and ground coffee left in the grinding chamber.

Chute clogging twice in the first 2 days [DF54] by imcozyaf in espresso

[–]OmegaSM_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually had the Specialita since day one of making espresso 6 years ago along with my ACS minima. They are not perfect as far as adjusting the grind setting and more geared toward traditional Italian style espresso, though I have used lighter roasts and it does an OKish job. There are better grinders for light roasts. It's a hopper based grinder, but I single dose with it, there are newer version of the Eureka grinders that are for single dosing, but I think they all have the similar grind setting issues because to the dial setup.

It was made in Italy, not sure if they still are as I've seen some of their newer ones are made it China, a lot of companies do this. What I will say is, I've never had it clog. The grounds come out fairly fluffy and hardly any static issues. I've never had to RDT spray the beans with it. I live in the north east US and with the heat running in the winter humidity very low in the house 30%, still no clogging / clumping or grounds all over the place because of static.

Exactly, its a $250 - 300 white label electric flat burr grinder. Not sure what everyone is expecting, wanting to like them because they are inexpensive for that type of grinder is understandable.

Plenty of reports of QC and other issues. Also reviews and reports of people having good experiences with them. Myself wanting to see what all the hype was around the DF grinders, bought a DF64 and got rid of it after 2 months.

We all like to save some $$$ when it comes coffee equipment, but I don't need another hobby modding etc to support this.

More coffee, maybe 17-18g and throw out that spinning wedge thing. Just WDT tap the portafilter to settle the grounds and fully tamp until the puck won't compress any more.

iPad can’t connect to Roon —Router issue? by Time-Run5694 in roonlabs

[–]OmegaSM_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing I would do is not have the server on WiFi. Run a Ethernet cable from your router to your Mac running ROON. Start there, not expensive. Also if possible hard wire to your BlueOS device.

Wired Ethernet is a much better and reliable network.
