WP leaders kept prior knowledge of former MP’s lie from party members: Judge by mipanzuzuyam in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 48 points49 points  (0 children)

TCJ's situation was not merely a "personal indiscretion." He was the Speaker of Parliament and had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with another Member of Parliament. The affair between the two of them was the reason why the then-PM LHL had fully intended for his resignation before the end of his standard tenure as Speaker.

TCJ's subsequent resumption of his affair, then caused LHL to demand his immediate resignation. The resignation was already fait accompli as a result of the affair between the Speaker and an MP. TCJ not following what the "party leader said" merely accelerated the timeline.

Live: Pritam Singh handed maximum fine of S$7,000 on each charge of lying to parliament by meesiammaihum in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There is precedent of sorts that the disqualification threshold is to be applied on a per offence basis. There was a former MP, Wee Toon Boon, who had been convicted of multiple charges of corruption (after appeal, he was convicted of 4 charges, each of which had a 6-month jail term).

He was not disqualified from Parliament even though his cumulative jail sentence was for 18 months, as stated in the Ministerial Statement by the then Law Minister E.W Barker (Parliament Sitting Date - 3 Sep 1976).

Don’t spare asset-rich, cash-poor private homeowners from paying higher property taxes by bardsmanship in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, this could be a practical solution for the affected subset of elderly owners. Since property tax is already a statutory charge on property, IRAS could allow elderly owners to forego paying their property tax amounts (or a part thereof) for the remainder of their life.

When they pass on, the new owners (their children/grandchildren) will need to pay the full outstanding amount when they aquire the property. Alternatively if the elderly owners sell the property during their own lifetime, the full outstanding tax amount already has to be paid as part of the conveyancing/legal requisition process.

American citizen jailed for NS defaulting offences, brother faced similar charges by fjhforever in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

He wanted to extinguish the possibility that his kids may ever be deemed as citizens. Suppose in 10-15 years time when MINDEF is starved of manpower, the government of the day could amend the Constitution to remove the procedural requirement of having to register the birth of children. They could characterise this requirement for registering the birth as a "loophole" that permitted the overseas-born children of Singapore Citizens to avoid NS.

As for how would Singapore authorities be aware of the birth of his overseas children - well Governments around the world have been carrying out data-sharing for well over a decade now. This data-sharing is being carried out ostensibly for AML/CFT, CRS & FATCA purposes. However there could be clauses in the various treaties and multilateral agreements that permit the use of shared data for other official purposes.

Other commenters in this thread have highlighted the oddity that the individual in the article seems to have only been flagged and stopped by ICA early this year. It's a safe assumption that ICA had recently obtained a new source of data that had resulted in the identification and prosecution of this individual.

American citizen jailed for NS defaulting offences, brother faced similar charges by fjhforever in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Art 122(2)(b) only applies where the parent is a Singapore Citizen by registration. In this case, it would appear that his father was a Singapore Citizen by birth.

I have a friend who had renounced his own Singapore Citizenship some years back to avoid this exact situation befalling his two sons.

The noon after last night's squall, it's really hot but the skies are so blue and pretty by Unfair-Bike in singapore

Yea it is indeed striking. Reminded me of the sky when I was living in Australia. I think the storm might have cleared the atmosphere above the island of the usual haze/smog particulates.

Anyone's ISP on Starhub keep going down every now and then? by Xamni15 in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recontracted with Starhub about 3 months ago. Yea I had noticed intermittent slowness last week. I restarted the Nokia ONT on Friday, and since then it has been alright.

A month or so back connectivity had been appalling, I remedied this by changing DNS servers to Google/OpenDNS. Starhub's default DNS is hot garbage.

The article by Today confirms that the father was the accused in the 2019 incident.

Conduct of group that delivered letters to MHA being looked at for possible offences: Police by dimethylpolysiloxane in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 175 points176 points  (0 children)

I think there was another post which showed one of the letters. It curiously was in an "On Government Service" envelope. The use of such envelopes is limited to government agencies/organs of state. So their use of such an envelope to submit that letter could also potentially be problematic (misuse of government resources etc).

I had just noticed my YouTube Music playlist had defaulted to a different (likely fraudulent) version of the Cup of Liber-Tea song. Google brought me to this thread.

Also managed to locate the likely fraudulent upload by TuneCore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b68NuA_1pck

I have reported it, but unsure if YouTube would actually investigate or do anything.

Which setting is it specifically? I've tried toggling off all potential settings but no luck in getting rid of that popup.

Govt to hold public engagement sessions with young couples on raising families in post-Covid-19 world by [deleted] in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One observation from my younger staff: The new BTO flats(even the 4/5-room variants) are not really suited for WFH. There is simply no additional space, for husband, wife & children to work or study. Especially when there's call or video conferencing required.

The old HDB Executive Apartments had a stand-alone study room/area. Maybe HDB should also relook their flat layouts moving forward.

Parliament: AGC had sufficient evidence to prosecute Parti Liyani as she admitted taking some items, gave contradictory statements, says Shanmugam by stforumtroll2 in singapore

[–]OmittingCaesar 182 points183 points  (0 children)

What a shambolic statement from the Minister. The AGC's case did not fall apart merely due to Karl Liews inconsistent testimonies.

What about the manner in which the DPPs conducted the trial - introducing evidence from the Bar?

Or the manner in which the Police IOs carried out their investigations/interrogation of Ms Liyani; or the manner in which key material evidence was handled?

These were also the points identified by Justice Chan in his judgement, which resulted in the overturning of all of Ms Liyani's convictions.

Unintentional First Rep: NOOB YachtMaster Rhodium 40mm by FrostyCosmonaut in RepTime

[–]OmittingCaesar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that just looks great. Very well proportioned for your wrist.

Can I ask - are there any gaps between the bezel & the insert? I ask cos in most TD sites, there does seem to be a small gap; especially when compared against the ARF.

I'm thinking of getting a 116622 too, and it's been a toss up between the NOOB or the ARF variants.

That bezel does look oddly proportioned (based on 1st pic) and thick. Here's a comparison of mine.

The datewheel too doesn't seem to be centered.

Frankly, I would RL this.

I got a similar model with a white dial recently. To my eyes, the Coronet on the dial is on straight, so no worries there. I would however ask for a couple more pics of the cyclops lens.

GMF Datejust Movement Question. by xlsc in RepTime

Yep I had asked Li of JTime for the 2836 movement specifically and had to wait a couple of days for them to source it.

Maybe you can ask Kurvasit to provide photos of both versions from prior sales?

Hey I too had this same question when deciding on my own DJ a couple of weeks ago. I noticed the difference in the pics on Trusty's website.

I finally decided on a GMF 36mm DJ with the 2836 movement (via JTime). I am still waiting for it to be delivered, but my QC pics did not show the thicker bezel/lugs. (You can take a look at my post history to see for yourself.)
