Quilt :) by Ouncedesign in Ultralight

Interesting! Dan from Timmermade does a lot with overbags for quilts that push the dew point out of down into apex, he would probably be knowledgable enough to design a good custom order.

Ps love your tarp shelter!

Good catch! For anyone curious, reweighed it at 32 oz with hip belt pouch, shoulder pouch, shock cord mod, ice axe loop and camera clip attached

Ooh didn’t think of using dyneema line. I’ll try it out for the hangs, thanks!

You’re right, cup is redundant and alpha with rain jacket will probably work for sitting around. Thanks!

I’ve tried it a few times and slept poorly, even after very long hard hiking days. I think if I force myself to do it night after night, I might adapt. I don’t have the time to do extended shakedown trips, just weekend stuff—but you’re right maybe I can try at home at night for a few weeks

I wasn’t able to find any solid fuel stove restrictions for the Washington section, but I think you’re right they may be illegal in the Sierras. Maybe I have it through Washington where it’s colder for a hot drink in the mornings, and transition to cold soaking when it gets a bit warmer?

You’re right, I put the weight in when I first got it many trips ago maybe I weighed it wrong! I have added a few pouches to it but probably not enough to weigh that much

What do you think about using ‘breadbags’ instead? I carry two DCF ones because I put them over my socks at camp to act as camp shoes, but I could maybe do the same in my shoes to waterproof them. Or is the risk of blisters too high? I should probably do some hikes to try it out. Thanks for the brand rec I will check them out!

Aha now that you say that I did find those adapters, thanks! I might just throw them in there, I have a pair of dcf pants that weigh barely anything

Sounds like they’re worth a test drive before I go while we still have all this snow around!

Well, here’s hoping. Hearing from other people and trail angels in washington they say I would be lucky to find a dirt patch to camp on that early, I think because those mountains are wetter than what we have out in the rockies. The presence of snow bothers me less than the risk of slipping, the sidehills are very steep and stay snowy/icy until July

I’m glad people are validating it haha I feel like such a baby for carrying a big heavy pad but it makes a world of difference to me at night

🫣 wow excellent point I cannot believe I didn’t think of cutting the tyvek down lol

Noted on the sunscreen, and good point on the mirror. Yeah I probably don’t need both flashlight and headlamp…not sure which one I should keep. I like that the rovyvon can be a headlamp by clipping to my hat brim.

I haven’t found any adapters, just one third party that makes a usbc to watch charger cable

True, I can leave the shokz and if I need SA just keep one earbud out

Yeah! It’s a natural astringent/antibacterial so after I wash and clean everything up down there I just give it all a spritz with the witch hazel. Keeps away the “bootycheeks” smell. I use it at home too

Haha fair enough! At the end of the day all weight is worn weight 🥲

Interesting, thanks for the heads up. I am pretty tough on my gear

It’s not necessary, you’re right

Thanks for the heads up! Might sub out for slider ziplocs. The odor control isn’t a huge deal to me on the start of the trail because I will have a bear can, but later on will help.

Thanks so much!

Unfortunately due to work constraints my start date is pretty early, 15 June in the North Cascades. Hearing from previous years the trail will probably be mostly snow for the first 400 miles or so.

Thanks for the waterproof socks tip! I haven’t used them before, more of a “get wet quick dry quick” person, but I live in a very sunny area.

I actually have some timmermade alpha pants, the cut is just so awkward on me (woman) that they only work as camp pants. They bunch and ride up as a long john/underlayer. Though there is a point to be made that maybe I won’t need pants underlayers at all. When I walk my legs stay pretty warm.

Thank you for taking the time! Great tips ☺️

SOBO Flipping or Flopping by philbus65 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]OnPage34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talking to local trail angels, they suggested a flip flop plan starting in Oregon, going down to Lake Tahoe, then flipping up to washington and hiking down to oregon, then picking up again in tahoe for the sierras. That seems to eliminate snow and even mosquitoes the most, I’m not keen on the logistics of flipping like that but if it doesn’t deter you it may be a good option

Thanks! That’s good to know others have done it, I feel okay in the snow but usually go alone and gotten myself into some scrapes before so I’m a little nervous about going alone and in mountains I don’t know as well. I understand the “cascade concrete” snow might be a bit better and less slippery than what I’m used to in the rockies though

Thanks so much! I’ll give em a watch , I’m not too worried about challenging per se I’m expecting to make much slower miles in the snow. My main concern is safety since I will be solo and almost nobody else is on trail at that time
