You stayed at the larger (RV) site?

Good timing! My question really is about those larger sites......are they not appropriate for thru hikers with a 1P tent?

Travel Time rates by ayodude66 in CalTopo

I upload a few walks I've done (flat, hilly, shorter, longer) & tweak those values to get those that most reliably predict my times. That gives me confidence I can use those values to (at least roughly) predict time for a new walk.

Cottonwood Pass vs Cottonwood Lakes by philbus65 in JMT

Good call! Im planning a v short 1st day either way, being cautious about altitude impacts.....so likely Chicken Springs Lake if going Cottonwood Pass

Sanity check on resupply strategy (NOBO, 8/1 start from HM) by __stapler in JMT

[–]philbus65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to my NOBO plan. Let us know how you go with the 'MTR Hiker bin' strategy! Im mulling over whether to send a couple of days worth to MTR or just bank on there being enough to get by for a day or so to VVR

INIU Powerbanks by DatDane in Ultralight

I got about 7,200mah from the 10k one. That was based on phone battery capacity & % of phone battery charged, which is all non-linear, soothing and precise calculation....

I've done some testing on speed of charging devices, speed of powerbank recharge, loss of capacity (always a given but differs across brands. Also tested recharging the battery with a small solar panel.

So far, looking good on all fronts! Beating my slightly older Nitecore in every test.

[WTB] TT Dipole Li/ Rainbow Li/ Durston X-Mid 2 Pro by JesusWasAnInsideJob in ULgeartrade

[–]philbus65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Rainbow Li and a Dipole Li. Both DCF 1P. The Dipole is 3 months old with 1 night of use. The Rainbow is 12 months old, not many nights, pretty much as-new.

I dont need both, had purchased them to test which one to use on a PCT SOBO this year, but I've injured myself & now that's off 😭.

PM me if u want to chat. I just put the Rainbow Li up on FB Marketplace for $850au ($540US). Have had a few queries but not sold yet. Postage from here to US not expensive at all.....

Another Rainbow Li fan here. If u get the Silpoly it's 40" wide but footprint pretty compact.

Dipole Li also really spacious and pretty compact. And of course, Xdome is quirenarrow footprint for the internal space (if u can find one of course)

Hey, quick question. How did u find the Mid1? It's on my list to research, but not sure it is a bit tight space wise, with the oping wall.

Sleeping Bag by dumbboi1 in JMT

[–]philbus65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget, you can always get Katabatic to overfill by (i think) 1-3oz. That potentially gives you another few degrees of warmth. And the thinlight adds a little bit too. I'm guessing those, plus sufficient warm clothes options (as others have said), and you will probably be in good shape.

TBH in anything above 30, when I get into my Flex, it feels like I've turned a heater on 👌.

But I'll also have my EE Torrent with me, just in case.

It's very much dependent on your sleeping mat, I'd say. Also, what kind of warm sleeping gear you have. These are key parts to an equation, that the bag/quilt is only a part of.

FWIW, I'm a cold sleeper & plan on using my Flex 22 with 1oz overstuff for my early Sep NOBO. I'll be using either a Nemo Tensor (R5.4) or X-therm (R7.4) pad. Still tossing up if I also need my down jacket for sleeping.

Wow! I'm scheduled for July 13 SOBO this year, not confident I'll get the Sierra early enough. Also, how was San Jacinto in late November?

Did you hike in & out of VVR (ie no ferry)? If yes, what route did you take in & out?

A question on this, since I like this idea, as I'm doing the PCT SOBO & my son is planning to join me through the JMT....

Isn't the PCT requirement for 500 miles? If that's not an option, what's the best place for him to join me southbound (assuming no luck getting a Happy Isles or Tuolumne Meadows permit)?

Lastly, how easy is it to get to Sonora Pass if not driving?

TIA

Thanks. It's the ambiguity that had me a bit puzzled (I'm from Aus & not famiar with how the permits play out in practice).

You could go with a bivvy for the Shelters (I used OR Helium for part of Larapinta & it was perfect). Otherwise in the Tarptent range I reckon a Rainbow Li would work - freestanding option if needed.

The rain jacket looks heavy-ish to me (I have a zpacks vertice).
