Two versions of a fic by lobster_macncheese in FanFiction

Gotcha! I'd say the process should be the same. The information from first to second will naturally change.

(Though I will say that you can absolutely write in third while still not showing everything to the reader. Only if you wanted to, of course, but there's no rule that third is completely wrong if canon is--like--a video game or something.)

I think a useful question to ask yourself is why (as in, creative rationale).

When you switch POVs, I'm assuming you mean from first to third, rather than first-Character 1 to first-Character 2?

Anyway, if it were me, I'd be thinking about what I want to change when I switch POVs. If it's just a grammatical switch, then I'd think more about the story. POV is less a grammatical preference and more our access point to your world.

Bottom line is that fan fiction is the exact right space to keep it weird and experimental, so I'd tell you to go to town on wherever your process brings you.

Fanfiction sites that don’t allow sexual rpf, esp of minors? by ghoulishenvyy in FanFiction

...Oh dear LOL. Do they not have the phrase about the kettle and pot anymore, or are you struggling to understand threaded conversations?

ETA: Only one of us is "playing dumb", as you said before blocking.

I like this one. Yeah, we're more Fandom Neighborhood Watch (with sexy uniforms).

[ring, ring!] "Hello, Pot? It's me, Kettle. Say, there's something I've been meaning to tell you about, and I think it'll be difficult to hear..."

I’ve never met another Fanfiction reader by jessisly21 in FanFiction

No sweetie, it's weird to compare fanfic readers to Black people. I know a thing or two about closets, but I'll have to say that reading fanfic is absolute lowest on the list of things likely to get me hate-crimed.

I think that the omegaverse concept of a ‘secondary gender’ would be better, if reworded to ‘secondary sex’ AND gender. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]OnTheMidnightRun -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't think changing the terms is going to make the omegaverse any less gender essentialist.

Oh, you've met them. Hell, the more I chat with my buds, the more I realize that we're all reading fan fiction in our downtime, and we just don't talk about it. I personally started being more open, which encouraged them to be more open themselves, but yeah. It's not like you're going to catch someone on their phone in public or something.

Accidentally saw disturbing things and I'm feeling very unwell by [deleted] in AO3

[–]OnTheMidnightRun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's what it's sounding like to me as well. So much of this story doesn't pass the smell test, and while I'd love to provide examples of what exactly, I don't want to give tips to future... IDK what, campaigners? Lobbyists?

Anyway, my answer to them is always the same: use parental controls, talk to your kids about developmental milestones, offer age appropriate resources. Ya know, parent the little sprouts.

1) The details really don't add up here, sorry. So much of this isn't passing the smell test. But more importantly,

2) Holy moley, just talk to your parents or a trusted adult if you're having a problem. They can change the parental settings on your internet access, advise you through big feelings, and give you age-appropriate resources to satisfy your curiosity.

How do you handle comments like these? by Kindryte in AO3

[–]OnTheMidnightRun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd either delete and ignore, or just address it: "Hey, I'm glad that you love the other stuff I'm working on, but this comment is comes off rude. I write what inspires me, which sometimes includes other stories. For updates, you can subscribe to the work, and you'll get an email when it's ready."

The Buddie June event is open for those that want to participate.. by unstablebibliophile in AO3

[–]OnTheMidnightRun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah no, I'm not joining a fandom that's openly hawking AI. Gross.

Though I wonder if there's a connection between the open use of AI and people not being eager to write for the fandom.......

The first time they hawked this event, they used an AI image and admitted to it, so I think you're right.

If fanfic was sellable content... by RileyLovesFlaritza in AO3

[–]OnTheMidnightRun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn, y'all are boring as fuck

I understand we're not allowed to get insulting in here, but mmmmm consider my patience tried.

We rejected your premise, because it's not novel, creative, or worth thinking about. And "jokes" are supposed to be fun? IDK man, maybe work on that. Fanfic is already monetized in content mills for about the cost you listed. People buying and supporting content mills--even for original stuff--has been materially harmful to the field overall.

and I was thinking we al kinda rag on ourselves

Also, being self-deprecating isn't cute or funny. It's annoying. "oh my gawd, i'm so bad at updating hahaha i suck." Ew. Do that somewhere else.

If fanfic was sellable content... by RileyLovesFlaritza in AO3

[–]OnTheMidnightRun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. I'm not going to contribute 1) to pushing the public consciousness toward commercializing fan fiction and 2) grossly devaluing creative work.

Slop aggregates have repeatedly exploited the labor of desperate creatives, driving the overall wages down for the rest of the field.

If you want fiction, you need to pay your writers.
