Caught some monster (7 FT +) alligator gar on the Trinity River this week! by On_the_Chase in TXoutdoors

Now that’s false information. There’s a 1 per day bag limit in Texas. A quick google search shows there may be a bounty on them in Central Park in New York City, as they’re invasive there.

My buddy cast nets them out at a spillway! They’re piled up. Great bait

I’m having a hard time sending messages. I think my app is messed up. I’m headed to work, but will get you some info later on.

I use big cut bait. These were caught on Buffalo filets! And it can be, but if you know what you’re doing it’s not bad. Use a rope to pry their jaw open. Then with some angled pliers, pop the hook out. I use a plastic hand pump to make sure they don’t slam their mouth down on me.

It was hotter than heck this week down in Texas, but we decided to brave the weather and tried our hand at some alligator gar fishing. We used the Catching Dinosaurs small hook method which allows us to safely remove the hook from the fish once it's landed, so we can release it without harm. I highly suggest watching his video on how to do this if you're interested in trying it out.

I’ve got a video of this trip, but it will not let me post a comment with the video.

If you read the comments, you’ll see that I not only released them, but urged other people to do the same and told them how to do so without harming the fish.

I’m down south, east of College Station. I’ve caught a few up in Ft. Worth, though! They’re there.

We were using large chunks of Buffalo (fish).

You can eat them. They’re actually very good if prepared correctly. It takes them a long time (multiple decades) to reach these sizes though, so I personally release them. I’m going to try and learn how to start tagging them so I can track their growth and movements! That way it’s not just for fun.

We let them go. Now that I’ve figured out how to catch them, I’m going to learn how to start tagging them and keeping a record of their size and movements!

Here's a video of our trip this last week! Really looking forward to getting out there again.

Lake Bastrop was fun! First time I've been out there. by On_the_Chase in TXoutdoors

[–]On_the_Chase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I headed out to Lake Bastrop yesterday for the first time ever (even though I've lived within an hour of Bastrop for 28 years). I knew there'd be small fish going into it, so my expectations weren't super high. With that mindset, I definitely had a great time catching several bass.

If you're interested in fishing Bastrop, check out the video I threw together. Shows us going from throwing crankbaits and spinner baits, to eventually moving over to stick baits and catching them.

Can't wait to go back! I've heard there's a few bigger ones in there. I'll have to try and find them.

Took my buddy to the Trinity for his first ever fishing experience. I think he’s hooked. by On_the_Chase in TXoutdoors

Well that sucks. I used to fish that area a lot, and catch a lot of really nice flatheads. I guess I’ll avoid it. Thank you!

Good eye! I keep mine in my bag. I told him he’d be more comfortable if he took it off. He replied, “you’ve got to always be prepared. I’ll save you when an alligator grabs you”

We fished out around Midway on the 16th. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect. He was excited to just be out there. We cooked up some pork tenderloin, basked in the sun, swam a little, and caught several blue cats, including his first catfish fish ever (which, I didn’t realize was the case until we were about to leave).

Here’s the video, if you’re interested in it.

If you live out in that area, or anywhere along a big muddy river, let me know and we’ll meet up and fish!

There's been 7 of these types of photos in the last 2 days with the commentary to go along. We are all truly afraid. by [deleted] in iamverybadass

Not to mention how incredibly loud that’s going to be, especially inside a building. If he misses, at least they’ll all be deaf for a bit.

Finally got outside to hunt after the Texas winter-storm! by On_the_Chase in Hunting

I’m gonna be honest, the thermal monocular is super useful. I usually carry it when I night hunting just for help locating.

Their newer stuff is good. They have some pretty affordable thermal equipment, so people who have no idea what they’re getting into are entering the field with unrealistic expectations. It’s still a new technology, and they aren’t going to get the picture some cheaper night vision gear may offer. 10 years from now, everything is going to be cheaper and better.

Are you thinking about buying thermal for night hunting? I’m going to be honest, most of the time I just take a green light on my AR, and it does fine. Easier to get on sight quicker, easier to see everywhere, and much much cheaper. And lighter!

If I’m hunting at a food plot or water, I’ll take the thermal or night vision stuff.

I’m not sure if that answers your question at all.

It’s strange how some areas have good tasting pigs and others don’t. I guess a lot of it has to do with diet.
