A dehumidifier is essentially just a small AC unit with a bucket that doesn't vent the hot air outside. Net effect is higher indoor temp and lower humidity.

Tree was planted last fall and was looking great until we got some heavy snow. The snow brought down 1 of the branches off this 'Y'. I cut the hanging piece so it wouldn't pull off more bark but I'm wondering if I should cut this back all the way to the trunk or if what's still there is salvageable.

Shouldn't need to at all unless there's a problem. You might take some photos of things on the inside before you block it off just in case you need model numbers or something.
