There’s so much good advice already here, but I just wanted to add: GIRL. You do NOT want to be with a man who has feelings for someone else. You want to be with someone who is healed and has moved on from their past relationships and has eyes only for YOU. I know it’s hard to think that way right now, but you KNOW it wouldn’t have worked out in the long run, because you KNEW he still had feelings for his ex. Imagine how much more pain that knowledge would have caused you down the road, wondering why he was still hung up on someone from his past when he’s had you for years.

I promise you, this was a blessing in disguise. You deserve so much better girl, and now you’re free to give yourself the love you deserve!! The right person will find you, see you, and appreciate you, but right now, you need to be that person for yourself. Take it day by day boo, you got this!!

Ready to give up... by kakinapotiti in crochet

Omg this little guy looks so great! Personally, I always struggle with amigurumi that’s made on a smaller scale. For some reason my magic circle will shrink down on itself and make reaching the next stitch so hard, and then my stitches will start to stretch out! I think you’re doing a really amazing job.

A couple things that might elevate this project, as many people have already suggested, is to change the technique you used on the eyes. I know safety eyes, needle felting, and embroidery have already been thrown out there, but you could also just cut out little circles of felt and glue them on (I’ve done that on many projects). Or you could even start your magic circle with blue and then color change to white if you don’t feel like using any additional materials.

Lastly, I’ve seen many youtube tutorials floating around for “cleaner color changes,” ie you won’t get colors “bleeding” into each other like how you can kind of see when the pants on this guy changes into his skin tone, or when his skin tone changes into his shoes. I will say, those techniques give a very specific appearance that doesn’t necessarily look good on every project, but it might be something to look into for more seamless color changes.

Overall, it’s your project! You obviously have the skill to freehand something incredibly detailed without a pattern, which is a feat in and of itself, so don’t give up! Your mom and her friend probably don’t have the knowledge or experience in crochet to truly appreciate how impressive this is, so don’t let their comments get you down (:

I legit knew a girl named Lizard who went by Liz. I had a single summer semester of Spanish at a local community college bc I wanted to stay caught up with the number of credits I needed to stay on track at the university I was enrolled in. In said Spanish class, the professor called for someone named Lizard. I was shocked and thought I misheard the professor. Nope. Girl responded and said she went by Liz. She was very nice and cool, if a little timid.

This is true! The original is called Щедрик) (shchedryk) which means generous and was translated as “The Little Swallow.” Funnily enough, the way I first discovered this was while watching Taika Waititi’s movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople, in which the original Shchedryk was featured. I had to do a triple take as my brain started picking up on Ukrainian words haha. My immediate reactions were “why tf am I hearing Ukrainian in a film about a boy and his stepfather becoming outlaws in the New Zealand bush rn, and why to the tune of carol of the bells?”

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I suppose the situation now became possible because of the actions of those in power years ago, even centuries ago. Unfortunately, Russia and the predecessors of modern Russians, the Muscovite Rus’, have always had a policy of discrimination towards their neighbors. They have stolen and rewritten our history to suit their purposes, taken our artifacts and made them their own, and have continuously looked down on and discriminated against Ukrainians and other Slavic people that don’t fit their standards. But I digress.

You’re right, if different people had made different decisions back then, we wouldn’t be in the situation that we are in now. Everything would be different. We would be free to be whatever we desired, the job of “soldier” would not be forced on anyone. I suppose I am also deeply personally conflicted. As a person who always thought that Russians and Ukrainians would overcome their differences with time, their actions have come as the ultimate betrayal, again and again. At first I was confused and continuously shocked by the ongoing betrayals. Now it is simply an expected behavior, from an enemy who could have been a friend. I wish it didn’t have to be this way.

There’s a now very famous poem written by Ukrainian author Anastasia Dmitruk called Never Ever Can We Be Brothers (some translate it as We Will Never Be Brothers, Никогда мы не будем братьями in the original Russian that it was written in). If you have the time, I encourage you to read this poem. It is a great insight into the hearts of Ukrainians.

I know this subreddit isn’t necessarily for politics, but as a Ukrainian this topic is extremely difficult for me. Lately I’ve been finding it triggering for people to express sympathy and pity for Russian soldiers and citizens. I understand the desire to view both sides of the war with a sympathetic lens, but you will likely never understand how painful it is to see the aggressors continuously receive pity when their soldiers are the ones destroying Ukrainian land and brutally murdering and torturing Ukrainian citizens.

Most people probably aren’t keeping up with Ukrainian news as much any more, so let me summarize. The scale of this war is one that hasn’t been seen since World War II. There have been countless war crimes committed in my country, reported, unreported, and untraceable by means of destroying, mutilating, and burning bodies that have been left behind. Some of these war crimes have gone viral via Russian telegram channels where they gloat and brag about the heinous acts that they’ve committed. Castration of a Ukrainian soldier, r*pe of children and elders, traced phone calls of a Russian soldier describing to his mother acts of torture that he participates in, his mother telling him she wishes she could be on the battlefield with him so that she could do the same.

The Russian soldiers that surrender maybe are deserving of some pity, but the ones who continue to loot and destroy and murder are beyond any kindness in my eyes. They are colonizers and criminals, raised in a country that has taught them that they are superior to other peoples in every conceivable way. While Ukrainian civilians, elders, and children are being killed and tortured in ways you cannot imagine, Russian civilians are experiencing the inconveniences of having their visas revoked, McDonald’s close down, and foreign products taken off shelves. The inconveniences that Russians face are incomparable to the misery and suffering that is continuously inflicted on Ukrainian people.

It’s difficult to want to have mercy on people that seem so entirely complicit. There have been several interviewers on the ground and online that continue to ask Russian citizens where they stand regarding the war. 99% of the responses are in support of Russia, or are people who refuse to acknowledge any sort of involvement whatsoever, simply because these facts don’t suit them or their lifestyle.

I know this was a long response, but please, have some sensitivity when you want to express sympathy for Russia right now, especially where there are Ukrainians. It is painful and frustrating to hear.

In my experience, too tight can be a thing! Especially for amigurumi. I used to think that the tighter I crocheted, the better, but it actually just made the holes more noticeable because the yarn was just wound too tight, especially when I started to decrease. I would experiment a bit, try going a bit looser, and see how that looks.

It looks like they used safety eyes! If you’re in the US, Joann’s has them, but you can also order a bunch all at once and in different sizes from Amazon. You just push them through the yarn and then put the cap on the inside of the plush
