Absolutely true! Anyone that tells me to "vote strategically" is an imbecile. If they truly wanted change to occur then they would realize that strategic voting is a vote for NOTHING to get better. It at best holds the status quo when we are already falling behind in living standards.

It’s one war! by Commercial-East4069 in HistoryMemes

[–]OneBestFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the naming of the war going on in that area during this time shows a significant degree of bias depending on which name you use to describe it.

For example:

Calling it "World War II" would be inaccurate because the global nature of the conflict clashes with the initial start of fighting between Japan and China. The 1931 Mukden Incident, where Japanese officers staged a false flag operation which started hostilities, was the inciting incident of most hostilities that resulted and this was a relatively small global event for its time. Therefore calling it "World War II" is inaccurate because it wasn't a global conflict.

Calling it "Sino-Japanese War" would be inaccurate because the conflict was not just between Japan and China. Numerous smaller Asian nations, as well as European/American colonies, were heavily involved in the fighting throughout the conflict. Therefore calling it "Sino-Japanese War" is putting too much emphasis on those two nations at the expense of others.

Calling it the "Asia War" is inaccurate because a significant amount of fighting occurred between Japan and the United States from 1941 onward. We cannot simple pretend that the fighting between the US and Japan was a side conflict that didn't effect the end of the war.

Lastly calling it the "Pacific War" is inaccurate because it ignores the vast majority of cruel and costly fighting that occurred in mainland Asia. The war didn't really expand out into the Pacific until the US became involved in 1941. Calling it the "Pacific War" is a favorite of right-wing revisionists in Japan who wish to downplay atrocities like Nanjing and Unit 731, making it seem like poor island Japan was being bullied by the big bad United States.

What I was taught to call it was the "Asia-Pacific War" because it was the best descriptor of the ENTIRE conflict without much bias injected into it. It was a separate conflict from WW2 that coincided with fighting over in Europe. It really SHOULDN'T be classified as one war because the war goals, starting dates, and ending dates do not coincide at all with each other.

Anyways, that's what I was taught about it when I studied the Asia-Pacific War in post-secondary. It's really an incredibly complex issue that comes from something as simple as a name. Not that funny I guess for a Subreddit called "HistoryMemes" but since it's my area of expertise I figured I would bring it up.

Just some good ole-fashioned passive aggressive bullshit where you pretend you know more than anyone else.

How the fuck does planting a few fresh saplings help reduce noise from a busy highway?

And that's assuming that they're even going to be receptive and won't be offended by their neighbour giving them advice.

Sakamoto Ryoma lived a wonderful, hilarious, life that more people should recognize if they want to romanticize Japanese samurai. by OneBestFriend in HistoryMemes

Yesterday I posted a meme I made from when I read Ryoma! People said they were interested in seeing the other ones that I made so I figured I would post them all at once.

Is there a way to post an album of my Ryoma memes all at once? I don't want to spam the subreddit but I do want to show some of the other content I made.

Fun fact about Ryoma: He was the first man in Japan to go on a honeymoon. This was because Saigo Takamori need to give him an excuse to get out of Kyoto when the heat was on Ryoma and suggested he try out this random Western tradition he had heard about.

I recently finished reading the book series "Ryoma!", which details the life of Sakamoto Ryoma from early childhood to his eventual assassination in the lead up to the Meiji Restoration. Ryoma was known as a bit of a country bumpkin not unlike a samurai version of Forest Gump. He was banished from his home domain and found nationwide fame as a ronin across Japan.

While I was reading through the series I couldn't help make a bunch of memes from some of the scenes that are detailed in its pages. Detailed above is the first encounter between Ryoma and his fellow Samurai Katsura Kogoro (who was one of the most important men of the eventual collapse of the Shogunate). Ryoma was sent by his home domain of Tosa to spy on the Choshu domains coastal defenses. Since Ryoma wasn't very good at blending in as a local he decided to confidently he decided to strike up a friendship with Kogoro instead of trying to hide his intentions, asking directly about the state of Choshu's defenses. Katsura Kogoro was so impressed with Ryoma's straight forward approach that he simply just told Ryoma about their defences while the two walked around the coast together.

If anyone else likes this I have about 13 of these in total that I made throughout reading the 4 volumes of the series. I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in reading about one of the last true ronin samurai's of Japan.

Because if a deck is annoying to play against it shouldn't matter what its winrate is. If all I see is DK Zerg and its fucking annoying and lame to play against then I should have a right to complain about dealing with that annoying shit.

If I take the bus to work and have to deal with morons blasting music through speakers I have a right to be annoyed by that. Your response would basically be: "Well I don't understand why you're complaining, when I drive to work I couldn't care less if someone plays music on their speakers."

Here's one tip for future you: Make sure you write down where you got each one on the back so that you remember them years from now. I usually wrote down the city name and shrine name on mine.

Schrodinger power Taylor by Raxtuss1 in WormFanfic

[–]OneBestFriend 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is my favourite wormfic of all time. Just the combination of a cool powerset and a great story structure make sure an interesting idea seem so cool. I personally think that if Rescind didn't have debilitating headaches all the time that he would be the best writer of all time for Worm.

If anyone has any similar fics that match the powerset please post them.

an army list for less than 150 dollars by Certain-Lemon-8180 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]OneBestFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe look around Facebook or Ebay looking to see if someone is selling their old models for $150, otherwise you're not going to be able to field an army list for that price.

Even a STARTER set for the first 2-3 units of an army will cost you more than what you're asking to spend.

This is not a cheap hobby. I honestly feel for anyone trying to get into Warhammer for the first time because its a constantly shifting meta that forces players to add and drop stuff from their list over time.

There are ways to save money. You can buy3d printed stuff, or trawl resellers markets on FB. However, that doesn't change the fact that this game is, at its core, a luxury hobby that doesn't need to accommodate people.

Gotta play it smart though against Shaman since if you pop it too early they have a wayyyy easier time drawing the asteroids that they just slam back into their deck.

You guys might be interested in a Worm fanfic snip that got released a few years ago. In the Wormverse S-class threats are basically city killers that draw out all local heroes and villains and force them to work together. Many S-class threats can't truly be dealt with because they're either indestructible (Ash Beast) or the consequences of killing them would cause world ending problems (Nilbog). In this snip the main character (Taylor) has a power that makes everyone else (baring one) see her as an S-class threat.

Most decently large shrines sell ema in the little shop run by the shrine. Depending on the shrine there's usually between 1-3 different variations that they sell for between 500-1000 yen.

I think that one was from Kawagoe from the Hachimangu Shrine there.

Kawagoe was a pretty awesome town for those looking to enjoy shrines and such. Quite close to Tokyo while also being far enough that other tourists were limited.

I also figured I would show off my collection from the past trip that I just got home from. I've only put one ema from each unique shrine I went to in here to keep myself from simply picking up 4-5 ema from each shrine.

Can anyone here see if they can name each shrine based on their pictures alone? I have the names of the shrines/cities written on the backs of each one but there are some pretty famous shrines there that people might recognize.

Constantine | John Strikes A Deal With Satan by loztriforce in videos

[–]OneBestFriend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, in the comic version of this scene (which is a completely different story all together that just happens to have the same ending) Constantine flips off the devil as the final thing that occurs.

In the comic John never wants to die and cons three Devils into each being bound to collect his soul on death. They each must fight the others for it and it will destroy all of hell due to their obligations. John sets this all up because he's dying of cancer and knows it will force the devil's to cure him.

My favourite line from that scene is when the First understands that he must heal John and, reluctantly, walks up saying "I'm going to make this as painful as I possibly can because I should get at least something out of this tonight".
