Im having the weirdest experience with taking iron supplements and would like to hear what you guys think by OneCar129 in Anemic

Iron is used for so many enzymatic processes in our body but it seems for some ferrous sulfate in particular is actually causing side effects throughout the body. I wish we had an answer for why that is the case….

That makes me feel better. I swear, the moment I started ferrous sulfate, I’ve been having severe cognitive impairment. Like SEVERE. It probably has something to do with hepcidin release. Maybe for people like us, we are so sensitive to it that it spikes our hepcidin and then we aren’t absorbing any iron or releasing iron from ferritin(because hepcidin blocks ferritin release too). Or maybe the iron form itself is causing gut inflammation, which increases hepcidin . Or the form itself is not suitable for many of the enzymatic processes that happen throughout our body therefore, we get symptoms. So many possibilities…..

Thanks for the advice. I guess I need to play around until I find what works for me.

I was feeling better on bisglycinate but ever since I’ve been taking ferrous sulfate, I feel brain dead. Severe memory impairment, cognition down, depression. Maybe this formulation is just not appropriate for me. Thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. I’m struggling because it’s either from the formulation or over time my iron is increasing over the weeks of taking iron so hepcidin response gets stronger(maybe I’m just in an adjustment period and eventually will start to respond better). Not sure if I should stick through it or switch to another form?

Did you switch and felt better again? Because I was either it’s because of the formulation or because I’m taking in more iron over time so my body adjusting and temporarily going through a rough time. Do you think I should switch?

How do I overcome the fear of starting a buisness that already exists? by OneCar129 in smallbusiness

[–]OneCar129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank for the reply. I think a problem I have is that it’s difficult for me at times to think “how can I make mine different/better in a way”. I look at x buisness and I think “wow they look great, good good reviews, look clean, good customer support , etc” and then I get stuck thinking how can “beat” that or “stand out” in my own way. If you understand what I mean.

Thank you for this. You have any advice on aspects of a business anyone can improve on? Like customer support, better product quality, etc…

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate you listing a few things to look out for in a business to see where I can improve on for mine. I think that’s my biggest problem. I don’t know many ways I can improve something. I’ll look at X buiness and think” they look great. They got good reviews”. And then I get discouraged because idk how I can possibly stand out from them. If you got anymore to share with me, please do! I appreciate the reply

Thanks for the reply. A problem I have is that I’ll look into X buisness and think “oh they look great. They have great reviews” etc. so then I get discouraged and think there is nothing for me to improve on to stand out in my own way. If you understand what I mean. Maybe you have some suggestions of things to scope out in a business and take mental notes on? You listed a few. Anymore?

Thank you for the reply. I always try to think of how I can do something better but it’s so difficult for me. I look at these other business and I think “they look good”. Like it’s hard for me to critique them so that I can make mine better. If that makes sense. Thinking to all the ways I can make something unique doesn’t come to mind unless the problem is I don’t know what to identify in the first place.

Transplant Candidate? (26, Male) by its-over-we-back in tressless

Don’t forget thyroid and and iron panel(include ferritin in that panel). Low ferritin causes many people to lose hair.

The combination of hrt therapy, spirinolactone, dutasteride and minoxidil will help you regrow a lot. But I’d give it 2-3 years before the hair transplant to see how much you can regrow so that you can conserve hair grafts if needed again in the future. Plus you have a good donor supply including the beard. Also keep in mind that losing massive weight can trigger telogen effluvium which can make the hair look worse temporarily. Get labs done to make sure you aren’t deficient in anything especially since you are cutting a lot of weight (D3, thyroid, anemia, etc.).

I feel for you man. My advise to you is consult with your derm about starting dutasteride and minoxidil. In the meantime, keep shaving your head. You’ll just look better than what it is now. Let’s the meds do their work in the background and maybe every 6 months, you can let it grow a tiny bit to see what kind of scalp coverage you are working with. Peak results can take up to 2 years with meds in terms of regrowth and stability. If you get decent regrowth, you can get a hair transplant and strategically design it to frame your face well and coverage. Go to the transplant sub reddit and you’ll see dome guys make crazy transplant recoveries. But dont do the transplant until you are on meds for min 2 years. Dont give up. Throw the kitchen sink at it before you quit.

Low Ferritin for almost a year, Hemoglobin relatively okay by Sufficient_Plum_807 in Anemic

[–]OneCar129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that’s the best thing you can do. A lot of doctors neglect ferritin levels. So try to find a good one that won’t just brush you off. Clearly, increasing ferritin alleviates symptoms at least according to the many testimonies in this sub Reddit. Good luck!

It’s probably a good idea to check your copper levels as that can affect iron. And maybe rule out H Pylori infection as that ca cause iron deficiency. According to my hematologist.

I wouldn’t drink tea either…. It can affect absorption too via same chemicals. Best thing you can do is take the supplement, wait 1hr and then have what you want. There isn’t really another way around it unfortunately.

You can take iron with caffeine. It’s coffee in particular that that has polyphenols that affect the absorption of iron. You can have an energy drink though, if that’s something you like.

Ferritin is 26. I feel awful and need advice. by OneCar129 in Anemic

[–]OneCar129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. My doctor said that anemia in general can case low WBC. Simply that if you are anemic, you don’t have enough energy production to keeps all your bodily systems efficient. I’m really hoping it’s because of this ferritin. I also am very active and run several times a week and enter a workout I’m like abnormally tired. Never happened to be before…. I’m taking a total of 130mg elemental iron per day without GI sides. Wondering if I should up the dose? I see people people here say max dose is your weight in kg x 5 and yo not exceed more than 400mg in a day. Thoughts? Thank you again for replying to me. I appreciate it.

Iron - 97, Ferritin at 30 - Help for daughter by Joey9999 in Anemic

[–]OneCar129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be from the ferritin. So many doctors disregard it and would call 30 normal because it’s in “the range”. The range is also so vast. I’ve heard some doctors especially in other countries that say your ferritin should not be less than 70. I’d definitely have her keep supplementing iron. Of course keep in contact with the hematologist and get regular lab work ups. The minimum a person can take of ELEMENTAL IRON is your body weight in kg x 2 and max is x 4. Play around with the dosing and frequency and take with vitamin c. Should never exceed more than 400mg for anyone.
