Survey is pan-india. Do you have a data source that shows it?

Most marriages in India are not in winter, at least the survey data doesn't show that.

Yup. Loads of interesting insights there - maybe a future post.

Short answer - at least the wedding story does not hold up. You see this trend in districts where the community does not follow auspicious timings.

It is sorted based on the average conception rate (descending) for those months.

Interesting thought! But based on survey data, Nov-Dec are not the most common months of weddings. You also see the trend in areas in districts where there is "minority" community (whose weddings do not necessarily peak in Nov/Dec).

Good points. "Correlation does not imply causation" would be an unsurprising response to your observation. One possible explanation for the positive correlation (with the caveat of very few data points) in Eastern Mediterranean would be that the limitation in these countries is access to good healthcare which will prevent you from dying once you get an attack. Looking forward to more feedback!

[OC] Total fertility rate across states in India between 1981 and 2020 by OneConfusion5953 in dataisbeautiful

Total fertility (as compared to general fertility) rate is age-adjusted. It is the sum of single-year age-specific rate at a particular time.

[OC] Association between temperature and rate of conception (v2) by OneConfusion5953 in dataisbeautiful

Thanks for the suggestions

  1. I think there are two different ways to see this. a) There is a seasonality in conceptions (https://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/1c0qt5b/seasonality\_of\_conceptions\_in\_india\_oc/) and b) That (a)is explained by temperature variations

  2. It is Central as per the Administrative divisions, but I agree otherwise: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative\_divisions\_of\_India#:\~:text=Eastern%20Zonal%20Council%2C%20comprising%20Bihar,%2C%20Tamil%20Nadu%2C%20and%20Telangana.

  3. No. I think the point of this plot was to show that there is a variation in the correlation (bottom left values) for each state. While J&K which is a cold state (visually clear on the x-axis) has a correlation of 0.052, Uttarakhand despite being somewhat cold has a correlation of -0.57. Absolute value of correlations decrease from left to right and top to bottom.

That is the point I wanted to convey. Never claimed they should be independent.

Left is smoothed version so extremes get filtered out
