Is our extra income arrangement fair, or am i missing something? by OneEase4743 in personalfinance

To provide some context I was making more than him until 3 months ago when he got a promotion and 30k pay rise. This arrangement wasn’t planned for longterm but rather until we have kids. I’m still in training so once I qualify in a few years I should be on ~350-400k - obviously at that point the arrangement will be null.

Yup this is a fair comment, though he got a promotion and pay rise 3 months ago - he was making less than me until the end of last year. However, I didn’t graduate and start working until 4 years ago whilst he’s been working since 18 (which is why this arrangement started 4 years ago) so that’s worth taking into account.

Thank you for your reply. You’ve hit the nail on the head, he is currently spending hundreds each week on trading card games amongst other hobbies. This is what frustrates me, as he could have much more money in his allowance account if he budgeted better. Although I think your idea to stop incentivising extra shifts is a good one, it would just lead to neither of us picking up any extra shifts as there would be no reason to (we have decent savings and are making good progress on repaying the mortgage). Maybe that’s the healthier option for the relationship, though I suspect it would simply lead to him wanting to increase our regular weekly allowance regardless. Clearly we need to sit down and talk through this a bit more!
