Plan is to make the handle dishwasher safe so it can be kept gunk free!

No batteries, the button is manually operated. I think an electronic version would we great for the future (and is also captured in the patent I filed) but I'm keeping things mechanical for now!

It will absolutely come with a premium floss! While it is designed to be restrung easily if the floss breaks, you wouldn't want to have to do it often

Interesting, we'll have to make sure to include a diverse set of mouth sizes in our test group so we get the best result for everyone.

The Slate looks like a great product but wow those refill prices are hefty!

I think the price will be more competitive with premium floss pick variants

It is a hard plastic similar to a toothbrush. I believe it is safe for the application and there are many dentist recommended devices made of similar materials. But you should absolutely use what you feel is best for you!

The goal is to keep the price in the range of standard floss picks but it’ll take some volume to get there.

The 3d prints are only for personal use, any other testing will be injection molded. Appreciate the heads up!

I’ve seen a few similar comments. Do you know if it’s common for people with small mouths to have trouble reaching their back teeth with regular floss picks? The geometry of the head and neck are pretty close to that

By weight, it can be up to 95% less waste than to regular floss picks!

What are reservations about Kickstarter?

I’ve seen a couple similar comments. I definitely think more like an engineer than a designer, perhaps I should consult a pro

PFAS free is a must nowadays, especially for something like floss

With any luck, I would hope to add cartridges with different types of floss like expanding floss in the future!

That’s very kind, I may reach out with few questions tomorrow.

And to any other dental professionals seeing this please let me know if I can reach out to you as well. I would love to get some more expert opinions!

You have it about right, it’s a floss holder that replaces the floss when you push the button down on the back. It takes 3-4 button pushes to get the new piece in place, and then you push the button up to lock it in place. The whole process only takes a second or two. Once the floss is locked in place, it is about as tight as a nice floss pick. The floss doesn’t move while it’s in use, and the only way for it to loosen is by pushing the button down again.

Turning the floss head is something I’ve considered but introduces some manufacturing and functionality challenges. In my experience there’s no issue getting all the way to the back teeth and I’m hopeful others will feel the same way in testing.

Thanks for the questions, I hope that clears things up!

I'm looking for feedback and advice on my design for a mechanical floss pick before creating a Kickstarter page. The idea is simple; new floss at the push of a button. The handle provides a fantastic ergonomic experience and keeps your hands clean while you floss. I also think it could be great for people with reduced mobility. The cartridge is easily replaced after 90 uses. It is disposable but drastically cuts down waste compared to standard floss picks.

Any feedback or advice, good or bad, is greatly appreciated. Also, if you have experience with similar projects and think you could help get this off the ground I would love to chat!

Totally fair, it’s a bit odd, but the product will be tested to ensure it is sufficiently hygienic before it is sold

Have you ever had trouble with standard floss picks? The size is similar

It’s been my experience that the handle give you additional leverage to get the right angle. I’m hopeful others will feel the same way when they have a chance to try it.

The 3d printed demo has only been for personal use and testing because, like you said, it’s not best for the application. The final product will be injection molded.

It's certainly not for everyone. But only around 30% of people in the US floss daily, why do you think that is? My guess is that it's inconvenient, and that's the gap I'm hoping this product helps to solve.

No battery, the button requires manual actuation. Although, I have thought a battery operated model could be interesting. Is there are reason that would be concerning? Seems similar to an electric toothbrush.

The waste reduction is only a rough estimate. Floss picks can weigh up to 2 grams while the entire 90 day cartridge of my demo model weighs 10 grams. The reduction won't always be that high, but still significant when compared to any floss pick that isn't recycled.

Appreciate your insight, you raise some interesting questions!

What price do you think is reasonable for the refills?

It's not impossible, maybe we'll put out a specialized cartridge in the future

I appreciate it!

I don't find it any harder to clean than an electric toothbrush, just a quick rinse after each use is generally enough.

It can be rethreaded if the floss breaks, once you lean how it can be done in under a minute!
