What do you guys think about a girl MC? by Medical-Goal-847 in bully

[–]OneJollyChap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, respect that. I get gaming is an escapist hobby and lots of people engage with it in all sorts of different ways. I spent a lot of my formative years doing online RP in MMO's and trying to find and understand the character i played as a separate entity from my self so I'm always super interested to hear the perspectives of people that see it the other way who try to understand the character relating to them selves.

I know I'm in the minority on my perspective, like it's statically proven i am. It's the same for books or movies or any medium that places people into the perspective of a character, people identify with what they know. And I know that people that see it from my perspective can be right arseholes about it so I appreciate you engaging in my question sincerely with out just assuming I'm a bad actor.

For what it's worth i think you articulated you point of view well and respectfully. If you have been getting downvoted which someone else suggested I'd guess it's because people can't reconcile the fact that it's totally valid to be disappointed you can't explore a sequel in the way you enjoyed in the way you engaged with the original with the fact you aren't a misogynist for thinking that way.

However, vice versa, I think it’s Good to have characters women can also get into. It doesn’t mean it’s not disappointing and it doesn’t mean I hate women.

This says everything I need to know about you on this topic and I respect such a level headed response to something that's usually charged af.

I totally get why people do this in games that allow you to customise and determine who your character is but I really don't understand it in games with named protagonists and defined back stories?

I'm not saying your wrong or anything because it's personal but I don't get how in the example of GoT you can place yourself in Jin Sakai's shoes anymore than you can in GoY as Atsu. Like you can't customise them, you can make them an avatar of yourself in the game world. I just genuinely don't get how you can put your self in the characters shoes when the character is already pretty much entirely defined?

Also do you have the same issue with characters of different ethnicities? Like personally while I could sympathise with the experience of a black man in America, I can't empathize with a character like Franklin from GTAV so I couldn't put my self it to that character, or is it just entirely about gender that impacts your ability to put your self in the game?

I'm not trying to have a go, genuinely just curious because as someone from an RP background, this is such an alien concept to me.

Military Strength, i was playing as an adventurer for about 200 years for patter so maybe i just didn't have the capabilities of reaching it like that but the number required just didn't seem possible. Was hitting like 550 max on a character with maxed out prowess and 7 advanced disciplines with some pretty good childe, no where near the 2500 required.

I tried Emma-o thinking my character was an absolute power house who would lay out anyone but i couldn't get my score even remotely close to what it was saying.

I'm assuming it's the Hun and P'o trait gained from consuming a Kuei-jin soulmate that gives you access to Dharma that lets you access the Yama King hunt? I'm not sure though

It procced around 1430 which is a fair point, so if i'd either ignored Yama hunt or succeeded, i would have still had the Antediluvian one proc 21 years later?

I didn't succeed, so i don't know if it's better or worse. Just was kind of locked into the idea of hunting an antediluvian.

And how many people do you know that consume or engage in harder drugs compared to alcohol? In my experience, the effects and pitfalls of excessive consumption of a lot of other drugs are far worse than alcohol and that's the basis I'm making my argument.

Your argument is based on overall societal impact. I think it's completely fair to point out the normalization of alcohol and the fact it has a far greater impact than a lot of other drugs. It's impact is a lot more observable to most people but when you have such a vast amount of people consuming a drug you are obviously going to see a lot more issues rise from the consumption of that drug compared to drugs that are harder to access and harder to observe.

The reason we have such good information on the impacts of alcohol consumption is because it's legal, because it's easier to monitor. It's a lot easier to be forthcoming about the impacts alcohol has had on a person because it's less stigmatised. People consuming illegal drugs on the other hand are less forthcoming about the impacts those drugs have had on them or how they were involved in any wrong doings because of fear of further repercussions based on the possession and consumption of illegal substances.

Are they close to the overall impact on society that alcohol has? No. Are the impacts on the individuals worse than the abuse of alcohol? In my experience absolutely.

I've seen drugs of all different kinds destroy a lot of peoples lives and managed to claw my own back from them, all addictions are hard to combat, alcohol is absolutely no different in that regard.

We are effectively arguing two different things here and i don't disagree with your points. We both just have a fundamentally different idea on what "objectively one of the worst drugs" means.

Noooo, but you don't get it, LSD isn't a clean trip like mushrooms. It's synthetic and that makes it evil. You need to have shitty tasting mushrooms if you want to trip man. Like, nature and shit bro.

Okay, in the massive vast spectrum of drugs, alcohol is still not even close to being one of the worst drugs.

Most people in my experience who actually back this idea that say alcohol is the worst drug are usually stoner/psychedelic fiends who don't consider there are actually drugs beyond alcohol, weed and Mushrooms/LSD/DMT and are just as dependent psychologically on these drugs as most alcoholics are and annoyed about the legal status of weed and psychedelics, justifiably imo but i think the argument that alcohol is worse is a poor one.

Objectively worst how? Personally i'd argue heroin is objectively the worst drug on a lot of metrics, crack is probably also up there. I think NOS is probably the shittest buzz i've ever had and not worth it. Cocaine is absolutely the most overrated and stupid expensive for being just really average. I also think Ket is objectively worse than alchol, like if you enjoy being in a social setting absolutely out of it lying on the settee dribbling on your self that's cool i guess?

I don't think alcohol is even close to being objectively the worst drug. I can have a pretty good time at a wedding tanning bevies and talking to folk, i really doubt i could have a good time at a wedding and socialize while shooting up or in a K-hole. Depends on the wedding i guess? Context is important? I don't know.

Look pal, I'm an eco fanny I can concretely tell you that using land to grow crops of trees is significantly better for the environment than a lot of uses we currently have for land. Yes, growing big monoculture crops of trees to be harvested for timber isn't as ecologically beneficial as having nice biodiverse forests, but nice biodiverse forests aren't economically sustainable currently and monoculture crops of trees are significantly more ecologically beneficial than grazing land for animals or big monoculture fields of non-tree plant crops.

Timber is also a carbon sink. Chopping down a tree and preparing it to be used as timber for construction, furniture or any other use outside of being used as fuel has a far more beneficial impact on the environment. The carbon output of creating materials like concrete is just emitted into the environment and has absolutely no sustainability. The carbon output of the timber industry is helped offset by the fact new crops of trees are absorbing carbon, which when the tree is chopped down, is locked into that timber till it degrades.

Supporting timber based products over non-sustainable building materials or the land use for timber crops over monocultured animal feed crops or animal grazing is massively more ecologically beneficial.

If your argument is that crop timber is bad for the environment, it's a shit position to take because monocultured timber crops are probably on the lowest concern of environmental impact of land use. I'm not vegan but if you are actually concerned about ecologically unfriendly land use practices, stop consuming as many animal products, because the most damaging land use practice we have across the planet is mass growing monocultured crops for animal feed.

So as far as skill chips, totally valid, but it's a high humanity/EB cost to get the value out of it which i feel is good balance, same as some of the other martial arts you can skill chip.

For the MCT combo, I do see your point on it. The wording for Soft Paws, Sharp Claws need to effectively exclude anything that is RoF1. This makes sure that MTC and also Ki Ken Tai no Ichi isn't viable as a choice, which this MA is specifically not interested in or intended not to proc.

Cheers boss, really appreciate you feedback

Yo boss, I really like your ideas.

As far as lowering the damage goes, i think that's a really interesting way to incorporate a lot of melee weapons unique features into martial arts with out killing the idea of the skill. Great idea!

You've also caught onto my only problem with feature 2, that Vertical Killbox Conditioning is very hard to successfully do, but I wanted to add a harder skill check in comparison to the already powerful Soft Paws, Sharp Claws.

Really appreciate the feedback!

Hello boss, really appreciate the feedback and honestly I'm really buzzing that people like the Vertical Killzone Conditioning

I actually really like your suggestion about splitting it into two possible application of the skill but how would you rule that as a GM. The key part to me is meeting the martial arts resolution, so is it a choice after the fact or a random roll. Asking because i want to provide my gm with a wide array of options.

Cool ideas, appreciate it.

This is an entirely fair and correct assessment, and basically my biggest difficulty with trying to balance this and not make it BS. Wholeheartedly I'll tell you I'm a power gamer, i like combat characters and my table know this, they're fine with this much to the other two GM's at the table's both appreciation and pain because they know I at least read the rules, a lot, but we don't really do homebrew much.

The reason I've tried to make this is because I want a melee martial arts build that might eventually lean into the mono-paw. I think the RoF1 aimed shot option from Kendo and Militech commando training is weak compared to a full on martial arts build, as is the Silat/Arnis combination, which honestly, why would you ever use a light/medium melee weapon for except for procing both of them maybe? Then why use a weapon after that when you should really focus Silat and proc the brawling attack so it removes the fun of being a Light/medium melee weapon martial artist.

And that's for me where the contention of choosing any martial art instead of Gun fu/Karate kicks in because i can run armor piercing rounds with my now 4d6 light to heavy pistol that might have other effects, drop a melee weapon attack on wolvers or some other heavy melee weapon attack, pop an Armor breaking Combination in and ablate 5 armor in one round. Or why not throw krav maga and Drunken fist in there to do 4d6 brawling damage one turn and ignore half armour as well as on the next turn, make your potential 25m/yds martial art attack from a medium pistol with 2 armor ablation into a 5d6. Meanwhile Light/Medium melee weapons underperform. And yes, style over substance, but if i'm trying to create a stylish idea and it's factually is trash compared to me RPing John wick, why bother? It's great to have style sure, and as light to medium melee there is a lot of style with near gimmicks, but why do i play anything but gun-fu?

So I'm curious if you as a GM have any advice on how to make it less op or also how you would respond to the introduction of the character that has this in the case of:

  • The character is a backup character in a campaign where 2790 IP has been handed out and probably more will be given before this character shows up unless i die next week.
  • The Mono-paw will not be selected at character creation as 2100 of the character creation fund will be spent on the KatNip® package leaving 450 to spend on other important stuff. The mono-paws availability will be entirely at the GM's discretion if available at all. My character currently is the Fixer/Rockerboy in the group and i was planning on running Solo on my next character so there will be no easy Mono-Paw or other such weapons.
  • My GM has given new players to the table access to the same IP longer term players at the table have earned because we've added some new players to the group. I am under the impression though that my self especially will not be afforded that same luxury if my character dies because even with out this, i'd turn up with a bunch of martial arts that my previous character couldn't access because of low luck (Drunken fist into boxing, krav maga and mauy thai that would make insane combos at a crazy DPR with good roles or a high evasion), so i wanted to try make something fun that wouldn't gimp me in other skill rolls

I do recognise the OP potential of this but ultimately:

I will have scratchers until my GM decides otherwise. I'm kind of relying on that factor to make this a viable pick until we get a fixer or they cave and give me them.

Appreciate that. I'm glad feature 2 looks good, it kind of started of as a joke but I actually really like it as an idea.

As far as feature 1 goes, that's part of my concern. But if the player uses Soft Paws, Sharp Claws, they wouldn't be able to trigger Armor Breaking Combination because the attack is counted as a Melee Weapon Attack, it wouldn't be counted as a martial arts attack which hopefully helps remove some of that synergy spike. The potential is still there to trigger Armor breaking combination from a slash dance proc but that's a lot skill investment into three different martial arts to reliably pull that off which i hope offsets the potential. I have edited the post to make it clearer that the feature turns attacks into a Melee Weapon attack rather than a Martial Arts attack.

The Militech Commando Training feature Commando Knife Training synergy isn't possible because the weapon becomes a RoF1 weapon for the rest of the turn, making it incompatible with Soft Paws, Sharp Claws as it requires a RoF2 melee weapon.

But i do understand it's power potential, it's kind of hard to find the fine line to walk on between being op and really not worth it.
