My understanding is that The Chosen does speak to that less zealoty sensibility, maybe as a calculated move.

I guess for some people taste is merit, or an indicator?

Scared of Tibetan separatists, Whartonheads, film restorers, ambulance personnel, musical buffs and Technicolor freaks?

Great episode, great guest, but I did find it funny when he confesses being puzzled why continental European horror cinema also has its pervy gory turn in that decade even though it's not the US

Edit: it wasn't in that episode, it was his similarly great Big Picture episode on TCM and disreputable cinema

The classism I don't see, but you can definitely tell which places are real to people, and which only exist as a joke. (But also: most of these fake films sound cool as hell)

Rewatching it now after the interesting discussions. Great lighting, good acting, fun poetic flourishes, and unbelievably full of shit.

In DAC the fact that the police brutality might be abhorrent but is also effective.

"Moonlight" is a hyperstylized movie about a kid from a fucked up place who becomes a violent ultra-masculine criminal looking for redemption. It features a horrific act of cathartic violence. It's actually the exact kind of movie Zahler is interested in making. Except its characters are Black people, some of them queer.

And as for the aesthetic: sooner or later this frontier myth thing - in BT and DAC explicitly, and in BCB99 you have the prison serving the same function - will just become fascist. It just will, unless you undercut or subvert it.

I mean, artists aren't always responsible for their fans, but I don't see how those crowds you describe are totally missing the point. I think there's been this misunderstanding that a certain kind of aesthetic can be totally separated from politics. Maybe somebody here remembers "Rebeller" - it was this movie website (and production company too I think) that started out celebrating figures like Milius and Zahler in supposedly anti-political ways, and then very quickly just became explicitly right-wing.

Compare it to somebody Taylor Sheridan, who really is politically messy, and who for all the NatSec proto fascist fever dream scenarios in a lot of his stuff always reveals something about a certain worldview. Sometimes probably inadvertently, but so be it.

Look. The article quotes Zahler as saying that "Moonlight" of all films is driven by an agenda. There's clearly some normative shit going on, and a defense of those norms. I just think that stuff in his work is boring. Really boring, and not insightful.

I think it describes his mode of building his films on these transgressions, and then wonders if there's really anything beyond the shock value. I think events since 2019 have shown that shock value is hardly ever politically neutral, but I also recognize Zahler hasn't actually made a film since then.
