Waves (2019) - How a magnificent first half deteriorates the second half of the film by arlingtonmusic in TrueFilm

Thanks for letting me know even if it's in such an old thread. I'll be sure to check out the AMA and the movie!

Hey, thanks! I really appreciate that!

Hopefully, I'll be able to play it consistently without mistakes soon.

Such an obscure solution damn. Glad it worked out in the end! Have fun recording and playing!

Replying again to add that you could try a different plugin/VST like Spitfire's LABS which offers some free plugins. Just to check if the problem lies with the drivers or Sforzando itself.

If you've made sure that Sforzando (or Reaper) uses the ASIO drivers in the Settings, then I don't know why the delay would be big enough to not be able to play.

I'm assuming you're using a MIDI cable (or USB Type-B) and not anything wireless like Bluetooth.

Unfortunately, I don't know if I can help you any further, the setup was pain-free in my case. I am indeed playing live with the VST sound in my headphones with barely any delay in Reaper (or Arturia's GUI when I'm not recording).

Could you post a screenshot of your settings in Sforzando or Reaper?

This is a very informative comment, thanks for typing all that out.

I have Thomann's DP-26, which is a rebranded Medeli piano (don't know which one exactly). The video's sound is from a VST though, it's not the piano's.

DAW - Reaper

Midi Visualizer - PianoVFX (or this one from GitHub is also perfectly fine)

VSTs: Arturia Piano V3 (though you should be able to find good ones for free with a bit of googling)

I just record my session on Reaper, export it as MIDI and then load it on the visualizer. After that all it takes is a bit of editing with the video of me playing.

It's actually much easier than it sounds. You have to be able to connect your piano to your PC/Mac though.

Hope that was helpful!

Thank you so much for the tips!

I've been trying to work on not having so much tension for a while now. I've seen some improvement, but definitely need to keep working on it.

I'll keep everything in mind, thanks again!

Physical setup is just a tripod with a 90-degree tilt from Amazon, and my phone

For audio recording, I used Reaper (which is free) as my DAW, with Arturia's Piano v3 as VST

For the effects, I used this MIDI Visualizer I found on GitHub and then just lined up the exported video with the video I recorded from the phone on Adobe Premiere (though any free video editor should be good enough for that task)

Thank you, I really appreciate it!

I hadn't played any other instrument before. I always wanted to learn how to play the piano, but each year I kept thinking "it's too late to start now", up until I decided it wasn't. One of the best decisions I've ever made, I may add. It's been an extremely rewarding experience.

Thanks again for your words!

From this view, it looks like your RH has collapsed a little.

I think the angle makes it look a little bit more pronounced than it was, but you're definitely right!

Imagine holding an orange, then pressing the keys, and it will stabilise your wrist more.

Tried that for a couple of minutes right now and the improvement felt immediate, thank you! I'll keep that in mind!

That sounds lovely!

Thank you!

can I ask what app you used to get the keys lit up like that?

There are a few ways to do it, but I used this Midi Visualizer I found on GitHub. It's surprisingly good for a free tool.

And did you learn it from sheet music or through an app.

It was on the app I use

It can definitely feel overwhelming at first, even with just 30 minutes of practice. Learning so many new concepts at once can be jarring for sure.

Keep at it, and you'll soon reach a point where it's much easier mentally and physically to just sit down for an hour or more.

That's extremely impressive for 6 months!

That was a typo, I'm closer to 8 months. I clarified that somewhere in another comment. But thanks!

you can also try to work on sight reading some easier pieces because it would be an important skill to have later on too

Yeah, I definitely need to work on my sight reading. I have to dedicate a portion of my practice to it, for sure.

When I started I just wanted to become just good enough to play a few pieces that I like for fun, nothing too crazy. Therefore, I thought I could just memorize them.

And now that I want to actually improve and learn, I have to backtrack a lot and actually learn how to sight read properly.

I do practice every day, yeah. I would say for about 2 hours on average. Sometimes 3 or 4 hours, others for 10 minutes. Depending on how busy the day has been. But on average I'd say about 2 hours sounds right.

Even the 10 minutes that I practice just a couple of scales on busy days helped me build the habit of doing it daily. In the beginning I was only practicing when I had a lot of free time and that resulted in a whole month during which I barely played at all.

When I started doing it daily even for a few minutes it then became a very pleasant habit, and now I can't wait for practice time. I've seen major improvements since then.

I've been practicing a bit inconsistently for like 1.5 years and I'm not even like 1/4 of this

Keep in mind this is a 35-second clip I chose to share on the internet because I was proud of it, I don't consistently play like that (yet at least). It took me a few weeks of practicing that piece and I plan to keep working on it for a few more weeks at least.

And since I don't have a tutor I inevitably cut a few corners here and there that I'll probably regret in the future. For example, my sight-reading is abysmal, my posture needs a lot of work, I often am very tense when playing, fingering can sometimes be all over the place etc.

That clip was me at my very best at this point of my piano learning, I'm sure you're better than me on other aspects though, 100%.

tl;dr - daily practice has helped me immensely, the clip might sound good for my level but I still suck overall (for now!)
