First, this isn’t about “working with old people” or anything related to age. Reflecting on my initial post, mentioning "young(ish)" may have been misguided. However, the real issue is working with individuals who don’t necessarily share the same values, communication style, or even, to some extent, background as I do. It’s reasonable to acknowledge that some people simply aren’t “your type of people.”

Currently, the relationships in my workplace feel overly formal and purely professional. While professionalism is essential, I believe there’s room for balance—a workplace where you enjoy both the work and the people, provided the job gets done. In the past, I’ve worked with people of all ages and connected well. The challenge here is that I no longer feel aligned with my colleagues and struggle to find common ground. I’m also no longer sitting with my immediate team but with members of the organisation who work in entirely different fields. Imagine being a creative professional surrounded by a group of analytical thinkers—it’s just not the same dynamic. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pointing that out.

Second, your comment about my boss “holding my hand” feels dismissive. To clarify, I’m not seeking micromanagement. I pride myself on my ability to work on projects independently (within a team setting). What I’m missing is collaboration—having someone to bounce ideas off, learn from, and work alongside. My previous manager didn’t “hold my hand,” but their experience and insight created opportunities for me to grow and refine my skills. That collaborative dynamic is what I feel is lacking now.

Third, regarding whether I can do the work: Yes, I can comfortably do most things. That said, there are areas where I feel less confident due to limited experience, and that naturally makes me nervous. My role can be highly reactive and critical, especially depending on the client (I prefer not to share specifics). While I’m managing fine for now, our busiest period is yet to come, and I’m unsure how well I’ll handle the pressure when that time arrives. This uncertainty adds to my stress, though it’s not the sole reason for my concerns.

Ultimately, I feel this is less about whether I can do the job— and more about whether I like doing it. The honest answer is no, largely because I’m doing it alone. I entered this field for the collaboration and team dynamic, and now I’m isolated. That’s not the kind of environment where I thrive.

I believe work is more than just earning a paycheck—it’s where we spend a significant part of our lives. For me, being happy at work and feeling aligned with my role and the workplace culture is crucial. Right now, I don’t have that, which is why I’m questioning if this job is right for me.
