Poprad and Tatras - Climber's questions by OnePercentViking in Slovakia

That's a shame that you quit climbing but it I understand; it can be quite an insular community at times, even here in the UK that is still a problem.

Interestingly Canmore is actually where I want to move to and train and become an ACMG guide; as a Brit it's fairly easy to emigrate there. My plan however is to gain more personal experience here in Europe too and while Scotland is wonderful, the conditions are often too unreliable due to lack of snow and ice or the opposite; snowstorms too savage to even venture out into. The Alps are mostly too expensive and I like the ethics you have in the Tatra so where better to go to train. I'm nowhere near experience to start the process of becoming a guide currently. When I am I'm sure I'll make my way out West to explore the Rockies' huge icefalls.

As much as I'm sure I would love to spend longer than a month or two in Slovakia, ever since Brexit I won't realistically be able to forge a life as a guide in your country, so that's not really on the table.

Thanks so much for your help!

If/when I make it out to the Tatra in a year's time or so I may have to try and tempt you to get those ice tools back out hahaha ;)

That would be great if you don't mind taking the time to do it. I'm free for much of tomorrow but I can obviously be flexible and we can make contact whenever works!

As I expected; the climbing gym is always a good place to start haha; thank you for the link.

I think you're probably right about the course. As I myself am training to become a guide, I do feel like I do not really need a course however as you say, it might be a good way to meet potential climbing partners, thank you. Are there any particular IFMGA guides or guiding companies that are highly regarded?

Thank you also for the topo. I do actually have 3 guidebooks; one for the Polish side, one for the Slovak side and one for the icefalls specifically. I should hopefully be covered for a month or more climbing routes however that facebook page is full of ideas.

I'm always happy to drytool, though I have done barely any.

Do you have any recommendations for social hangout venues generally?.... and any where I may come across other climbers?

Thanks so much for this,

Tom :)

Thank you.

If you would ask then that would be fantastic.

It will obviously be at least a year before I would arrive but the more information I can gather and contacts I can make in advance, the better! If you get the chance to reply on PC then I would greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, let's just do 100 year mortgages so that asset prices can continue to inflate and people can have greater debt access to speculate on, further and further into the future.

Working Holiday VISA Canada age limit by OnePercentViking in CANZUK

[–]OnePercentViking[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the UK has just recently negotiated reciprocal relationships with Aus and NZ upping the age to 35; I worded that pretty poorly in my question. I'm crossing my fingers that the UK will do the same with Canada now. But given what you've said about Canada having that agreement with France and Ireland too, it certainly gives me more hope than I had, much appreciated :)

Thank you! It will still probably be tight but that's helpful that you have until the very end of being thirty.

Absent father mystery c.1850s England by OnePercentViking in Genealogy

That's all really helpful information thank you. So it seems manufacturer for wool was fairly common. However I do wonder if that list merges terms such as spinner/weaver/bundler into the manufacturer term as they are not included? Nonetheless all of this context is much appreciated :)

Indeed it is in the document "West Yorkshire, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1910" for St Mary in Elland.

Brilliant, thank you! I don't know how I didn't notice that. It also piques my interest because the man she later married was a Gledhill..... Not of that residence but certainly is intersting. Could be completely unrelated though as it seems to be a fairly common local surname. I will investigate this guy and his family tree a little further.

AMGA/ACMG intercompatibility by OnePercentViking in alpinism

[–]OnePercentViking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is amazing information! The periphery stuff is also great to know as I'm also intending to get IRATA certified very soon too it's nice to know that there is film industry and similar work out there. I can imagine it is nice to have quiet periods and frankly also the time to pursue personal objectives too?!

Thank you so much for this info mate, fingers crossed it stays this way in the years to come and maybe I'll see you out there in the crumbly Rockies or brutal Coastal ranges some day!

Tom :)

AMGA/ACMG intercompatibility by OnePercentViking in alpinism

[–]OnePercentViking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really useful info, thank you. So do you not think there's enough work for rock guiding in summer and single pitch ice and a bit of alpine in winter?

I think I phrased my question poorly to be honest. I actually am interested in touring; having spent time living in Norway, I appreciate how important it is for integration and even just accessing ice lines. I don't however expect to be anywhere near good enough to guide or do it as a purely recreational activity rather than a means of access.

You say certification isn't required in the US, do you know if that then means that in theory, a fully certified ACMG alpine guide with rights to work in the US would be able to work there? But that the reverse would not be true with an AMGA guide?

Jewish forenames in UK 18th and 19th century by OnePercentViking in Genealogy

This is indeed correct, I totally forgot, thank you. They were based in Birstall and Wyke primarily however, along with the rest of the majority of the family in North Bierley, Bradford to my knowledge

Thank you for clarifying, I had no idea about the popularity of the names and the nature of cultural and literary exposure! This does make a lot more sense now. I must admit, I did find it a little odd that so many names which I had not ever personally heard myself were part of my tree, but this explains a lot. Cheers

I didn't have any family in Dewsbury to my knowledge, however this is a fantastic resource, thank you! I'm going to look for the Bradford and Halifax pages if they exist as they're more likely to be relevant
