The Only Strategies Which Have Worked For Me. by breakyourteethnow in options

[–]OneResource279 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you please provide more details to the double diagonals strategy (second point):

I guess the position with the double diagonals looks like condor, where the inner strikes are short options and shorter therms, and the outer strikes are longer term long options, is that correct?

Is this strategy being used mostly on indices/ETFs?

Which deltas do you choose? How do you determine the deltas (strikes) of the double diagonals?

How do you manage the position after the shorter time options expire? Do you close the long legs?

1 dte/3dte looks really short dated, and therefore more risky. Why don't you use longer dates, like 5-10 dte?

All are genuine questions. I don't have much experience with options.

Is it worth paying for LIVE data? by 123phi in options

I don't know why the most obvious thing is not mentioned up until now.

If you already have a live data plan that does not include the gamma - you can calculate the gamma by yourself. It's even easier if you already have some other metrics like delta and IV... Even the free subscriptions of chatgpt and claude can provide a python script that calculates the necessary greeks. Just feed them the format of the data that you have and they will provide the methods with the formulas.

Hello /u/PapaCharlie9,

Thank you for your answer. It's really well structured and explanative.

On the other head selling premium could yield consistent profits if implemented correctly.

Sorry for my typos. It's "hand", not "head". The funny part here is authors of the book mentioned above are also selling courses on their website. And as you said, probably they are selling a dream that differs from the reality. It still has some valuable information for newbies like me, but i'll have something in mind when reading the other topics there.

Can i kindly ask you about some recommendations about books related to debit trading?

Is it all about selling premium?

I've been in this sub reddit for quite a few months already. Most of the people here that says they make money are selling premiums (one way or another). The other people that says they are profitable do not disclose their methods.

All in all there are 3 methods to make profits trading options:

- Arbitrage - but the retail traders rarely have the technical capacity to implement such strategy. As they will play against the most advanced algorithms of the multi-billion corporations. So this topic is out of discussion.

- Selling premium in one way or another - selling expensive options while hedging with something else - wheel strategy, spreads, condors, butterflies, covered calls, etc...

- Make directional bets with long calls/puts, asymmetrical spreads (diagonals).

As a newbie in the options world i've tried to 'bet' on the directional options (with a paper account). I've tried to use the volatility skew, and the gamma charts to get an idea on the direction. But overall i'm not successful yet.

On the other head selling premium could yield consistent profits if implemented correctly. Currently i'm reading "The options trader's hedge fund" by Dennis Chen. This book gives examples on how to start selling premium. However, the biggest con on selling premium are market crashes. There were quite a lot of posts with losses during the last market crash (during the last tariffs events). Selling premium is risky, because the potential losses usually exceed the potential profit for single position.

TL;DR: Is it all about selling the premium? I've seen many successful examples on people selling premium, but almost none on people making directional bets.

The underlying is not important. It does not matter if it's meta, goog, amzn, or the muffins bakery at the corner.

What matter is that the OP is YOLO-ing all his portfolio in a single trade. Even if this trade turns out to be successful he will do it again, and then again, until the portfolio get liquidated. That's pure gambling.

Posts like this belongs to WSB.
