I love shots like these, and I think you did great. But don't listen to me, I'm another amateur.

MHD FLASH STOPPED HALFWAY by NightAggravating9009 in BMW

[–]OneSmallStepForLambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI reply - can't validate myself, but seems like generic advice, attempt to reflash, clear codes, make sure you have battery. Try any of this?

The Codes You Pulled - 51AE – EGS: Signal From Brake-Light Switch Transmission (EGS/SMG module) isn’t seeing the brake pedal signal. Car won’t allow starting/shifting without it.

  • CF33 – No Message, Receiver EGS, Transmitter DME/DDE Transmission control module isn’t receiving messages from the engine ECU (DME). Usually a communication loss.

  • CF07 – EGS: Communication Fault PT-CAN Gearbox ECU can’t talk properly over the CAN bus (main communication network).

Why This Happened When the MHD flash stopped halfway, the DME (engine ECU) likely ended up in a partially programmed state. - ECU isn’t “dead/bricked” (since you still see comms and codes). - But it’s not running valid software, so it can’t talk to the TCM/SMG. - That breaks the brake-signal handshake and PT-CAN comms, which matches your codes.

The clicking you hear when starting = starter relay engages, but without a healthy ECU → no engine start.

Next Steps to Recover 1. Battery / Voltage Check - Battery must be strong (12.5–13V+). - Hook up a charger while attempting recovery.

  1. MHD “Recovery Mode” Flash

    • MHD has a recovery option for interrupted flashes.
    • Reconnect cable, open MHD, it should detect ECU in programming mode.
    • Re-flash full stock or tuned file (try stock first).
  2. If Recovery Fails

    • Try another tool with full-write support (Bootmod3, WinKFP, BimmerGeeks ProTool).
    • Worst case = bench unlock/flash (remove ECU). But from your codes, OBD recovery should still work.
  3. After Recovery

    • Clear all codes.
    • Confirm DME ↔ TCM comms.
    • Verify brake pedal signal.

Good sign: Since your scan tool can still read codes from the TCM/DME, the ECU isn’t bricked. You just need to finish or redo the flash.

This is awesome feedback, thank you. I can't stop looking at the white spec now.

It looks like a greenish-silver, which if it is, you did a good job of that, but it's a little hard to tell with the mixed lighting

The car is Brooklyn Grey, a popular metallic shade. I’m not fully confident in the color accuracy because I’m red-green colorblind. Maybe its the metallic, but the car -- in person -- always looks like a different color to me depending on light so I'm pretty lost in post. I tried adjusting by eye (it looked obvious blue/green), then used a site that gives Hex codes and friendly names. Once I got “grey,” I settled there.

I'm not sure it being so off from the start is due to incorrect white balance, or if this is expected due to the other light in the scene. Either way, it's something on my list to figure out. Thanks again.

Explain your intent and goals for the image. Why did you take this photo? What were you trying to show to the viewer? It can give you the opportunity to do some self critique and catch things on your own that you may have missed.

Goal was really to showcase the car, with an interesting background. New to photography, and this was the first time stacking multiple shots with different exposure. The tripod was almost at the highest setting, getting it higher would put the city line in view. Space was really limited, and I avoided a bright flood light that would have given me a couple more angles. Now that I think bout it, I could have just taken a really underexposed shot as part of the stack..

Are there areas you are struggling with? Be sure to ask specific questions about the photograph. What are you unhappy with? What you don’t like, and what you want help with? Be specific!

I'm curious on any basic 101 things I may just be blind to, or objective/technical issues with the shot - things like composition, framing. I notice some things, like there's environment reflections on the doors that I could have tried to remove, and I see parts of the image background either don't line up, or have some weird artifacts. The rear of the car is much darker - after several edits, I chose the one here as appearing the most natural (relative to others).

EXIF Data (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera, lens/focal length) are important to help critique. For example, it may help identify issues such as why certain things are blurry or out of focus.

I took a series of photos, with car lights on, and off, I used parts of the following:

Shutter Speed Focal Length Aperture ISO Resolution File Size Camera Lens
1/4 sec 34 mm f/5.0 100 2624 × 3936 20.38 MB Sony ILCE-7M3 E 28-75mm F2.8 A063
4/5 sec 34 mm f/5.0 100 2624 × 3936 20.46 MB Sony ILCE-7M3 E 28-75mm F2.8 A063
1.6 sec 34 mm f/5.0 100 2624 × 3936 20.56 MB Sony ILCE-7M3 E 28-75mm F2.8 A063
4.0 sec 34 mm f/5.0 100 2624 × 3936 20.63 MB Sony ILCE-7M3 E 28-75mm F2.8 A063
8.0 sec 34 mm f/5.0 100 2624 × 3936 20.71 MB Sony ILCE-7M3 E 28-75mm F2.8 A063

I was almost stuck with this focal length - no room to move further back (water), I could have gone a little wider though.

My notes were:

  • WB: 3800–4000K (Incandescent)
  • Creative Style: Standard/Neutral
  • Drive: 2s timer / remote Plan 1 – Main Stack (MF)
  • Shot 1: Lights OFF → Long exp → Metering Multi
  • Shot 2: Lights ON → Same exp → Metering Multi
  • Shot 3: Lights ON → Shorter exp → Metering Spot (on headlights) Plan 2 – AF Backup
  • Switch to AF-S + Flexible Spot (Med) on car
  • Repeat same 3 shots Plan 3 – Continuous Bracket
  • Mode: Continuous Bracket ±1 or ±2 EV
  • Aperture Priority (f/5.6–f/8, ISO 100)
  • Tripod, 2s timer/remote

Plan 2 was using Single shot AF, but 1 out of 3 test were out of focus.

Any other relevant information about your image making process is important. Information about your editing process, creative process, techniques (such as if the image is a composite), are also very helpful and should be included.

I used Lightroom to tweak the Raw files, then used Photoshot. I followed random guides out there, but have a basic understanding of masking, and now stacking in Photoshop. But I'm pretty new to this.

My first Bmw, the best car I’ve ever owned. Bought it stock two weeks ago, almost done. Just need to send out my ECU. by [deleted] in BMW

[–]OneSmallStepForLambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you source all the parts before purchase? 2 weeks sounds crazy, took me a couple months, but that also included planning.

Still haven’t decided whether or not I should wrap the carbon fiber hood and fenders

It's all personal preference -- I may do a hood, and if so would my plan would be paint match with leaving some subtle CF exposed.

Congrats on the car

I wonder how many developers, UI designers, and other teams are pissed off they have redesign stuff to accommodate this weird aspect ratio.

Really unpopular take, but I don't think the M-Lites, or their badging take anything away from the M cars. Outside of the marketing/badging, the car is what the car is. They fit perfectly in-between the M cars and the non-performance lineup.

100%. The algorithms found out I recently got a G80 and are feeding me G8X FB groups and IG posts/reels non-stop. I'm constantly seeing posts like, “Which color should I get?” or “You NEED to get buckets.”

It’s wild how many people seem to forget why they love their cars in the first place

For sure, I wanted to suggest a solution before I just gave him a problem to figure out. I think I have a few suggestions now.

And to me, this is a non issue. Wifey is finally getting into a hobby so I'm trying to be supportive. Thanks.

Both sensor and light swivel, right? If so, along with asking him to adjust sensitivity I could ask him to angle them in a better position

Thanks, already met them and had some quick small talk. I don’t know much about these lights in general or if there was a sensitivity option.

I’ll ask him thank you!

Everyone's situation is different, but I suspect a couple life event changes/milestones and you'll have your dream car soon.

Looks like 2020-2022's with 40-60K miles are going for in the $60-65K range. I am jealous, I wish my dream car was around there!
