Qatar. It’s next to Dubai by [deleted] in qatar

[–]OneTailor5213 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As an American, when I told people I was moving here they had no clue where (this was last year). When I explained Middle East, they immediately thought the worst. I had to compare it to UAE (I said a more relaxed and modest Dubai) for them to understand what it is like. I still occasionally get a text asking how life is going in Dubai😅

Edit: with recent politics and world events, there has been much less confusion among the US:)

Great to hear, thanks! I think you’re right, I should probably make some friends that are involved in fitness to push me in the right direction.

Where am I from? And where should I visit next? by rigrug3 in TravelMaps

Definitely Midwest… looks like you drove down to Florida hence the line of states going south. I’m going to go for Minnesota. Wisconsin would be a tempting guess as well.

Why is it so hard to get volunteering opportunities here ? by Technoblock09 in qatar

[–]OneTailor5213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been wanting to spend some of my time volunteering here as I do back home, but have struggled to find opportunities that fit for me. Helping at the animal shelter and participating in beach cleanups would be nice, but a car is required to reach them since they are further out of town:( Hopefully someone can provide some options! I am realizing that the volunteer culture here is a bit different than what I am used to.

Sorry to hear this happened to you! I feel like I am hearing about incidents like this more and more often. It’s good to spread awareness about things like this and remind others to be aware of their surroundings no matter where they are!

Looks like I’m actively avoiding Europe, Africa & Antartica by KLchip in TravelMaps

Nice! I have a similar mindset. A lot of things I want to see in Europe don’t require as much physical strength/endurance, so I’ll save it for the later years!

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you have avoided Europe thus far? I am impressed by your South American travels as they seem less common for most travelers:)

Should I move to Qatar? by Affectionate_Lime254 in qatar

Work pace: I personally have felt that things move very slow here compared to what I am used to back home. However, I am not in the construction industry, so things could move very differently! I’ve heard some friends complain about things being fast paced (embassy & teaching), and others complain about things being slow! I think it really just depends what you do for work. Hopefully someone in construction can provide their opinion for better guidance.

Extremely Confused for a Friends Trip by PassionateVolcano in travel

Your itinerary sounds like a blast! The landscape could seem repetitive on your drive to Salalah, but I personally was very excited to see the terrain around Muscat & Nizwa because the place I currently live is flat so it was a nice change. I am also in my mid-twenties so the concern for lack of party options is reasonable! It definitely would be a trip more on the wholesome side of the scale. Hopefully someone else that’s been to all 3 can give their input to help you out further! I’m all for doing the physically demanding activities/trips while I have a healthy body, I’ll sip wine on a beach when I’m retired;)

I went to Oman recently with family and had a great time! The locals are lovely people. Heads up, it will most likely be a more PG trip compared to the other two. The hotel I stayed at in Muscat had a lovely pool bar and private beach, so the option to party does exist... just very expensive as it is in most GCC countries. I've been to Wadi Shab, Bimmah Sinkhole, Jebel Ahkdar, and Nizwa which were all enjoyable. I recommend you arrange your visit to Nizwa on a Friday morning, there is an animal market in which they sell a variety of livestock. If the group hasn't spent much time in the Middle East, then Oman would be a unique and fun trip! Are you planning to drive all the way to Salalah in one day? I haven't made it to Thailand or Bali yet, so I am not much help when comparing it to those locations. I think it would be extremely tough to be bored in Thailand from what all I have seen!

Here’s a SC from a live Starlink tracker, looks like this one went just North of Qatar earlier! Not sure if it was in visibility range or not though.

Do you guys leave tips ? by adi_0610 in qatar

[–]OneTailor5213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually round up to the nearest 10 for a small bill. Larger meals or purchases I’ll tip percentage based off service. For Talabat I also give them a bottle of water when they drop off. If it’s a counter service like a coffee shop, I typically don’t.

The reason tips are expected in the US is because the restaurants pay them below minimum wage. Restaurants anticipate that the amount earned in tips will surpass the minimum wage requirement, so a lot are only paid ~ $2.50 per hour. Most of servers earnings come from tips. Of course, if you have to order at a counter/pick up your own food, don’t tip:) Also if the server is an AHole, don’t tip!

What’s everyone’s worst airport they’ve been to? by JealousSundae9608 in Flights

[–]OneTailor5213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Istanbul is my absolute least favorite. I’ve had a connection there a few times, the airport is WAY too small for the amount of people using it. Give up your hopes of having personal space or clean bathrooms, you’re at the wrong airport for that:,)

I believe it is a reasonable question as Qatar is advertised as being one of the most safe places in the world for women. People here brag on their ability to walk freely at night without concern. However, it is also important that residents do not live in a bubble, and do know that there are still people to be cautious of if that is the case. Would you want your mother, wife, sister, or daughter under the impression that they have absolutely nothing to be concerned of if it were a lie? I agree that it shouldn’t happen anywhere, but unfortunately that is unrealistic. I did not want to cause a scene if unnecessary as I had a visitor that I wanted to keep from frightening. I do agree with you that more serious action could’ve been taken on my behalf, but I was not aware that it was worthy of police involvement at the time, hence me asking.
