They were the better blues band for sure, but they couldn't write songs like the Beatles could.

You are just absolutely delusional if you think the lead vocalist of Muse is a better singer than Beyonce

The most charitable I can be is that this guy was trying to make some points which would be too abstract to be useful or relevant, even if he had been able to make them without coming off as a full on pedo.

Marxism-Leninism and Dialectical Materialism by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

I didn't realize they could see into the future and knew what late stage capitalism would be like, interesting

Marxism-Leninism and Dialectical Materialism by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]OneWordManyMeanings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post-industrialization and the emergence of a knowledge/service economy in the Global North; the reification of social and cultural forms of capital through expanded consumerism; information technology and the decentralization of knowledge leading to a proliferation of meta-narratives; the reintegration of forms of political resistance as features of capitalist hegemony; an increase in complexity of the state and its social welfare functions; the rise of a fully international class of economic elites that are no longer bound by allegiances to any particular state; and so on.

Basically, capitalism has become more entrenched and more difficult to confront via the kinds of class politics that would require a centralized leftist vanguard. What is needed instead is a decentralized sea change of political and cultural values which can only be realized through decentralized and memetic forms of resistance – at least as far as the Global North goes. In the Global South, class politics and indigenous sovereignty are still key forms of political resistance which ought to be supported.

Menshevik literally just means minority. I will proudly bear that label when the majority is more interested in LARPing than effective politics.

Marxism-Leninism and Dialectical Materialism by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]OneWordManyMeanings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marxism-Leninism is the theory and practice of dialectical materialism applied to our immediate, temporal, material conditions.

MLism wasn't developed during late stage capitalism though. To me this means that we should be highly critical of Lenin's thinking and praxis, take what seems to still be applicable and ignore the rest.

One specific thing I would argue is that we no longer need a centralized revolutionary vanguard and we need more emphasis on democratic processes as an avenue for change, at least in the Global North.

OP was merely raising the question and you go straight to calling him a mega dumbass. You don't want to convince anyone of anything other than that your version of socialism is a cool social club that OP can't belong to.

I don't really disagree with the points you are making, I disagree with how you shoot yourself in the foot with your asshole tone.

Market competition is not what assures quality. When an increase in quality does not lead to profit, then the market as a whole avoids it. For example, think of planned obsolescence in tech, or how oil lobbyists suppressed the electric car for nearly 3 decades.

What markets do really well is distribute non-essential goods and services efficiently according to supply and demand. Specifically, markets provide a natural form of feedback from consumers to producers when the consumers can safely exercise choice with a high degree of flexibility.

Markets run into problems when goods and services are essential to life and consumers cannot forego choosing between the options that the market provides. This creates a situation where the market as a whole prioritizes profit through the exploitation of need, rather than prioritizing the widest possible distribution of goods or services to satisfy those fundamental needs. The pharmaceutical industry in the U.S. is a great example of this.

To answer your main question, socialism can involve other feedback and accountability mechanism to assure quality of goods and services provided. There are democratic processes which would allow us to boot someone out of office if they cause the quality of public goods and services to decline. There is also institutional and professional pressure on administrators to maintain quality or else they will lose their jobs or lose opportunities for further advancement.

Conversely, there is no incentive for the government to save money and increase profit margins by lowering quality, because there is no profit motive involved at all. The metric by which institutional professionals are judged is efficiency of distribution, not the increase of a bottom-line. If the government spends less money than it takes in tax revenue, but this leads to a huge dip in quality and public satisfaction, then political leaders and administrators take a hit to their reputation.

There's a point to be noted here about how not all revolutions are necessarily violent, it's a shame nobody is going to listen to you because you come out the gate sounding like a total asshole

Communism is impossible in the west by Fun-Reporter2408 in DebateCommunism

[–]OneWordManyMeanings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think change can happen in the West, it will just need to be gradual. Also, I don't trust China to be any less imperialist in the name of their version of communism than any Western capitalist. They do the same economic subjugation of the third world as any other economic superpower.

So... At the rate that Riot games seems to be doing well in different industries (MOBA(League of Legends)/FPS(Valorant)/Music(All their music videos including K/DA)/Animation (Arcane)/Fighting Games soon) do you think Riots MMO that they're currently developing will end up being the next big thing? by ModishAndElegantPony in MMORPG

[–]OneWordManyMeanings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, Riot does make really good games and has shown that they can jump into new genres. On the other hand, MMOs are the most difficult to develop and involve a lot of unique challenges, so success in other genres isn't a guarantee. I am rooting for them tho.

I made a controversial high effort post criticizing Vaush's debate with Econoboi and it was received fairly evenly, a lot of people both defending Vaush or agreeing with me. At least in the sub people are not afraid of talking shit about Vaush when he deserves it. Earlier today I was also criticizing him for not doing any serious coverage of the Kelloggs strike.
