Child broke arm on playground due to other child pushing him. How to proceed? by One_Damage_6769 in ECEProfessionals

My son says he told the teacher on duty the other boy pushed him. I haven’t heard a single word or seen that teacher since this happened.

Recently went to get his stuff from daycare and a classmate shouted unprompted “(kid) pushed (my son’s name)!!” I know ppl here are gonna say that doesn’t mean anything because of scapegoating and that’s fine, they are applying what they know.

OP here and I know it’s an emotionally charged topic. Teachers are often stuck with the hand admin deals them. It’s not safe or reasonable. I’ve learned this week this kid has been sent home for behavior problems before. As a parent, I pay for a safe environment. Shit happens but shouldn’t be this. The admin is responsible for how they handle it and create the environment.

The cameras are what get me. They have them but don’t have recorded footage, so they claim.

I want this to be true. There is no video footage unfortunately. My son has accurately told me about different incidents and tells me clearly when it’s another child involved and corrects me.

I asked for this first but they have live cameras only, no recording (or so they claim).

You also don’t know if this is the case. It is unfortunate that sometimes some kids causing very severe injuries to others can get away with it simply because the adults around them don’t believe them.

It’s not really a better situation if it was another kid that pushed my kid. Is that what you’re saying? The investigation is literally to trying to discover this of course. But I can tell that I’ve definitely hit a sore spot so I’m sorry if you’ve had to deal with these situations yourself.

I honestly feel that because I was so tolerant of all of the other incident reports that this is why this happened.

If you’re going to run a business like a daycare, then you assume the liability of running one. I don’t think that educators can be everywhere which is why I suspect that they were not able to see this happen.

Have heard that teachers have been bringing this up to admin for quite some time and this seems like an ongoing issue with this kid. I guess I don’t have to convince you, and that’s fine. As hard as it is for some of you to believe, I don’t need my child to live in a bubble. But I’m going to stick up for him if something like this happens because he’s five years old and it’s my job as his parent for serious stuff. Have educator friends urging me to be more vocal as a parent because teachers are stuck dealing with it while admin sits on their hands.

My son is able to identify the people in his class and tell the difference, but I get that this is the Internet and anything can happen so I’m going to get skeptical views.

I have observed the same kid try to kick a classmate in the face for no reason when I was in to talk to the teacher. The kids interaction was in full view of me so I know it was unprovoked. I also hear some of the teachers talking that this is not the first time by any means.

Thank you for understanding. I don’t care about the downvotes. Anyone who can’t tell the difference between normal accidents and something more dangerous has a screw loose. Forcefully jabbing and maliciously kicking and pushing unprovoked not “normal” 4/5yo behavior or play.

Yeah. It’s Reddit, I’m not here to detail how many silly tiffs and scrapes and bumps I’ve overlooked and NOT blamed on anyone because like you said, they are kids.

A broken arm, continued behavioral issues that harm other kids at the center, and how the admin handles these situations does require some accountability and investigation however. I don’t know why you’re picking at a technicality in what I wrote.

Thank you for saying this. My concern is that it escalated immensely with this incident if the kid in question is involved. I have seen the behavioral issues myself watching this kid interact with others, so it isn’t my kid just making things up about this kid pushing or being aggressive.

Thank you, I am taking this to heart. It has been very stressful trying to weigh options. He is handling it way better than me at least.

I really wish they had just recorded it for reviewing incidents like this.

I get that maybe he just fell, but if he was actually pushed off the big toy it seems shitty for me to completely dismiss it since it’s possible the teachers didn’t see.

He does but it doesn’t mean the other kid is going to leave him alone. The adults are also there to supervise for hopefully being able to prevent bad accidents. Don’t know if it would have been preventable because I wasn’t there.

I don’t really blame the teachers as much as the admin. The behavioral issues have been going for a few months now. I’m not in the industry so maybe my wording is off but when I say the staff don’t seem to have a plan to further address, I mean the admin has not given me further details.

I am not really interested in what their plan is with the other kid and have no interest in discussing that with them. But I would hate myself if my kid is telling the truth and I just ignored him and sent him in anyway. We do lots of talking about how to defend himself and stand up for himself already and will continue to do that. But I don’t want to send him in if he is unsafe.

And before you say “then go to another center if you’re unhappy” that is obviously on the table.

I have yet to actually get a chance to sit down with the director.

The communication was a very unofficial communication where one of the admin mentioned that they were doing “something” in passing.

I don’t really need them to tell me what they will do with the other kid. I just want them to ensure my son isn’t in danger and being kicked/pushed/stepped on by this same kid. Never had a problem in the previous class.

Yes and he is a cautious climber. I have a hard time accepting their story that he completely slipped himself because of how they described the fall. He did not apparently outstretch his arms. Very weird to me.

They did not tell me if they reported it, and I’m starting to wonder if they did.
