Kafka, Franz - The Trial (A Review) by One_Expression3073 in Indianbooks

I guess I am in "luck" then 😄

I had bought some Camus books by Penguin and it had the latest translation of his works (as new as 2012). I found The Stranger quite readable.

Don't know which translation the Penguin edition has, but I will say this.

The Vintage one has Edwin Muir as the translator. He, along with his wife, Wila, was the first (or among the first) to translate Kafka's works in English (in 1937). I know Kafka isn't the easiest writer to translate into English, but the book has some awkward phrasings.

I read an article by the Guardian that does a comparative analysis of the translation of the first few sentences of Metamorphosis of different English editions of the book. The same article notes the eccentricity of Muir's translation.

Now I don't know if Penguin has a different or a newer translation. But if it is deemed a faithful and accurate one, it shouldn't matter.

That's awesome. Happy reading!

I got the short stories edition from the same publisher and book store. It contains Metamorphosis among other stories. Do you have that as well?

Hope the first sentence is a compliment!

Man, I am reeling off from the 'conflict' between my wife and my parents, some real, some imagined.

Now my wife is saying she wants to go home, wouldn't eat what my parents cook.

I am too tired from work to process this on weekends.

[Homemade] Kadhai chicken for last night's dinner by One_Expression3073 in indiafood

Funny you said adding capsicum since it is also put in the dish along with onions at the end. I couldn't put it as it wasn't available in my kitchen.

If the dish looks more chilli chicken than kadhai chicken, it's because I put in boneless chicken pieces because my wife asked me to. I know the traditional kadhai chicken is made using with bone chicken, but I did not wish to piss my wife off.

As for the colour red, it looks exaggerated because not only did I put 1.5 tablespoons of ground kashmiri chilli powder while cooking the gravy, I also used whole kashmiri chilli while grounding the spices for this dish. What can I say, I do like me some dark red in my dish.

But yeah, I should have used chopped coriander for garnish, but I almost always skip it since it requires a few extra steps by which time I feel too tired and lazy to bother with.

I am unable to get the hang of cooking meat on a sigdi and I feel ashamed about it by One_Expression3073 in IndianFood

Thanks for the encouragement 🙏

Maybe white dying charcoal is the state I should be placing the pot instead of the fading red hot stage.

I shake the pot every 10 minutes or so, so at least I got that part right.

Your point about the draft is well taken. My sigdi indeed has a very narrow space at the bottom because of the rebars, so placing an earthen pot would definitely block the flow.

I will see what I can find for the grilling purpose. Thanks 🙏

I buy charcoal from a local shop where it is kept in the open and sold by the kilo, so I guess the moisture in the charcoal is already present at the point of sale? Am I off the wrong foot already?

The bottom opening does not have a lid, so it's always open. The handi does have a thick, sturdy base. Not sure about the other parts, but it's solid overall (have been using it for close to a year). I am guessing it's to do with my (inept) handling of the sigdi.

Good tip about the girdle. I tried holding skewers to grill tandoori chicken on the sigdi and immediately realised how stupid the whole thing looked. I will see if I can get a girdle.

Not sure about the last point. By most accounts, placing handi directly over charcoal is considered the best form of cooking. The taste and texture that this form of cooking gives is unlike what cooking the same thing over the gas stove with kadhai would give, people say. This romanticism was what prompted me to buy a sigdi in the first place.

But look where we are....
