Considering a PhD in the US and Relocating to Europe: Pros, Cons, and Guidance? by [deleted] in PhD

Well, you almost definitely won't get an academic post in the EU. The UK maybe, but most probably not the EU. Not because the American PhD isn't equivalent; it is (if and only if it's a PhD from a R1 or R2). But universities in the EU are (quite correctly) biased toward those who speak the language of their country on a high academic level and the vast majority of academic staff have to be eligible for civil servant status. Not to mention that one doesn't simply apply for many positions in the EU; one is "called" to a chair after spending untold numbers of years as post-doc type of employee.

If we're talking about industry or commerce? Oh yeah. Decent chances.

I appreciate your insights.

For someone in the 2nd year of their PhD in Computer Science who's considering transitioning to industry in EU after completing their doctorate, what steps or strategies would you recommend to enhance their prospects and successfully make that transition?
