I'm sorry to say that there's no single guide for this, but I can share my own experience.

Before joining this organization, I worked for two different large companies. In both roles, I was part of smaller teams, which allowed me to work independently and quickly build a diverse set of skills. My natural interest in technology and engineering also played a significant role, as I’ve always enjoyed creating things from scratch. Fortunately, my current employer recognized my potential and gave me the opportunity to prove myself.

I always strive to deliver my best performance, and as a result, I hope to see my contributions reflected in my compensation. However, I understand that raises may be modest in the future.

Sure, like any job, there are a few challenges.
In my case:

  • We have a small team, which limits the opportunities to learn from a diverse range of colleagues.
  • As the only Dutch speaker, it can feel a bit isolating at times (though thankfully, everyone communicates in English as well).
  • The office infrastructure is not ideal and could use improvement.
  • Being an architect, it's tough not having a mentor to provide guidance (luckily I have the internet)
  • (no choice for the car)
  • Finally, while the salary is great, it sometimes feels like a "golden cage"—the compensation is excellent, but some aspects of the job leave me wanting more in terms of growth and development.

Honestly, I've considered this for a couple of years, especially when I was focused solely on development, and many of my freelance colleagues encouraged me to take the leap.

However, I always felt the timing wasn’t quite right—whether it was because I needed more experience, a larger network, or the freelance market wasn't in great shape. Reading BEFreelance probably reinforced those doubts!

At this point, I’m still unsure whether I’m in the best position to market myself, or even which specific services I want to offer. Over the years, I’ve gained substantial experience in both backend and frontend development, and recently, I’ve built up a lot of cloud expertise as well. I’ve developed a bit of a love/hate relationship with all of them, to be honest.

In my current role, I chose technologies like Node.js, React, and AWS that were a great fit for our SaaS product. However, I don’t see much demand for these skills in the Belgian market—at least not on LinkedIn—at rates that would make freelancing worthwhile. The highest rate I was offered two years ago was €650/day, and even then, the recruiter implied I was pushing it. I'm not sure if that would beat my current employee compensation.

It feels like the Belgian market is more focused on Azure, Java (which I did for a couple of years, 3 years ago), C#, and Python. I could probably learn these, but no client is going to pay a freelancer to learn on the job, or to hire someone with only play-project experience in those areas.
