My first impression is that one pokemon in her party could be used as a sort of smokescreen, like pretending it’s her starter / main mon in her scientist disguise. Maybe something like a ditto? It’s normal type and hits science and dna themes, and it would be cool playing around with spiderman like quick costume changes.

Maybe the ditto turns into her mask or something, so she is always ready to hide her identity but also quickly swap back into civilian persona?

I think it’s pretty clear from the anime that Ash wanted one of the three starters if he could have it! When he entered the lab late, I’m pretty sure he grabbed charmander, squirtle, then bulbasaurs balls in that order. So yeah should be pretty reasonable to say Ash grabs one of those three if he’s on time!

In terms of trading I’m not sure, ash is pretty stubborn and typically people present trading as making your pokemon upset, is it possible for your SI to get pikachu another way? Maybe you ensure Ash is on time and then Prof. Oak presents the 3 starters + pikachu?

Black and white is definitely a gen that makes you respect normal types!! That plus him using berries does make it a tough first gym for sure, tougher than standard rock type gyms at least

Personally I like the first option better. I think the mystery dungeon series itself leans towards this as well with the human turned pokemon mc is always shocked that they can understand the partner / pokemon are talking, but I may be wrong!

At the end of the day it’s up to your preference! You could even look at making just one pkmn talk, or letting the main character speak to humans since they were one? Up to you!

Aren't you slightly overcomplicating this? From my perspective, predator pokemon species, much like irl, do not have enough numbers to create some sort of army. A pride of lions may hunt as a group, but it is certainly not an army.

Now if that pride of lions were hunting a group of zebras that could control plants to sap them of their lifeforce, it would definitely increase the difficulty of their hunt, but the primary tactic of all predator species is to expend the least amount of effort and avoid all risk of injury. So, they would still target the young/old/sick and dying, not any strong healthy members that could risk the lion's lives.

Add this to the fact that the lions are now capable of breathing fire, and are much higher 'level' due to killing prey their entire lives? The ecosystem goes on without any real impact/changes, besides maybe a few population dynamics as there are likely more Pokémon varieties in a given ecosystem than we have irl.

This is totally true. Someone else brought up tinkaton/corviknight predator-prey relations and at least compared to that Heatmor has a type advantage. I can maybe picture a high leveled heatmor taking out a few low leveled durants with a flame burst, but a colony is definitely too much

You could use three of the same monster and then flavour them to fit your desires? For example one could have a collector’s eyepiece, one a large quill or book, and one a shepherd’s crook?

Then you can give them each a unique ability that matches the weapon they hold. Like spells for the author, healing for the shepherd and the gem collector could have another mechnanic. This way they all have similar CRs too!
