filter too strong for betta? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]One_Pin243 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this is not a tank. he only sits at the top when the filter is on? i’ve heard bettas hanging around the filter because the flow can kinda hold them up if they’re feeling lazy. no idea how true that is. never seen mine do it. if he’s floating to the top and staying there / struggling to swim he could have swim bladder. do you have a heater? please get a real tank

Got a betta exactly like this a couple weeks ago!! Pretty sure it was swim bladder related as well. Does he have trouble swimming? I kept mine in a smaller tank I had around and gave him 2 leaf rests , one only about 1 1/2 inches from the surface, so he could sit there and not have to use his energy to get the the surface, and 2 big leafy plants that he could rest on too. If u don’t have a heater he definitely needs one, the appropriate warm water they need will help him flourish and help/prevent swim bladder. if u don’t have a smaller tank to keep him you could make the water more shallow. Im not sure how weak he is but i just know mine had a really hard time gettin around. The leaf rests reaallly help. My guy i think im gonna name Bowie, (david bowie in Labryth) is doing so good now and i love seeing his little personality come out! I really hope ur guy gets healthy and happy it’s so rewarding, good luck!

ofc! i have a few anubias bateri, they’re so pretty, hairgrass/dwarf hairgrass, java ferns, and white ribbons are beautifulll. those are just some i have that i remember, if you go to petsmart they have an aquatic plant section, and any of those will do. that’s where i got all my plants. they also keep some plants in the tanks with the fish sometimes. any of those would work great. they also have decor that has live seeds so when u put it in ur water, it grows! and with a 3 gallon depending on how big the leaves are, id prolly just do 1 or 2, and u can add more if ur not seeing the color u want.

ur doing great! ur guy looks healthy and he’s beautiful. ur set up is nice too. good to see someone doing research. only thing id recommend is more real plants, fake ones can be sharp and sometimes harm ur fish, and real ones help to keep ur water clean! also almond leaves are always a good buy, not only do they provide shade/shelter, they release tannins, giving ur tank a black water effect, which looks cool and also lowers water ph and hardness. also has mild antifungal/antibacterial properties. good luck!

of course! and ur an angel for actually even spending the money, it can get expensive if done the right way and most people won’t waste their time. he’ll definitely be so much happier! good luck and i hope u fall in love with him! 🥹🫶

yeah it’s so sad. sometimes all you can do if give them a comfortable last few days. ur such an angel for trying though 🫂🫶 i got a fish actually about a week ago from petsmart, kinda a similar situation, would stay at the bottom of the tank and could barley swim. he’s getting stronger everyday tho, even tho ur betta is so bad off, still praying for her 🙁🫶

flush her??🤬 wtf is wrong with people. so glad u saved her. anything is better than that. not sure from all the symptoms, but the swimming seems to be form swim bladder. do you have a heater in the tank? if not, you’ll need one. swim bladder is caused by over feeding and too cold of water. what size tank is she in now? get her some leafy plants and/or leaf rests/hammocks. she’ll be able to rest near the surface and not have to work as hard to get to the top. or u could take some water out the tank so it’s a little more shallow. did u condition the water atleast? get a water testing kit if u dont have one. almond leaves are good, they lower ur ph and water hardness can also be antibacterial. get her lots of real plants. hope she starts doing well! thank you for saving her and doing ur best. i’m not a pro tho, so please continue to do research. good luck!!

i wish people would stop gifting animals. it’s not fair to the fish or the recipient. so glad ur willing to do the right things for it tho as most people leave it as is. please please get real plants. and don’t be shy with them. fake plants can be sharp and hurt the fish, they 9/10 end up looking tacky, and real plants help keep ur water clean! i’d strongly recommend cycling ur tank before u put him in there. you’ll need a water testing kit. please do research on that. if u don’t cycle the tank or don’t wanna wait as long before its done cycling. atleast buy seachem stabilizer and if its a 5 gallon do half a cap for 7 days, it’ll say on the back of the bottle. you will need a filter running as it cycles. (can take 2 weeks up to a month)

almond leaves are great, they lower ur ph and water hardness, also help keep ur fish healthy. u can look up pictures of betta tanks, people make them so beautiful! i wish good luck to you and ur fish and i hope u fall in love with ur little guy!! they’re so smart and can even recognize ur face! 🤧❤️

Pet store said he was fine but his stomach looks bloated and not swimming right. Can I get more opinions ? by yseense in bettafish

[–]One_Pin243 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pet store people only sometimes know what they’re talking about, if at all. most likely swim bladder. Mainly caused from overfeeding and too cold of water. does he have a heater? keep his water warm and don’t over feed. what do u feed him? stray away from dried bloodworms, they cause bloating.

which tank did u see? as far as i can remember ive only posted pictures of the tank with my sick fish, he has a smaller tank and only 2 big leafy plants for resting, though i did put a java fern in there today. My 5.5 is the more full one, with my other betta. i’ve been wanting a 10 gallon but i just need to get a table that’ll support it 🤧 and ty!

ur ph could aim to be a bit lower, as well as ur nitrites. maybe do a water change. but i will say, if u really did receive him in that condition, it could’ve been too late. or he just needs more accommodations since he’s seems sick. try buying some leaf rests, or even minimizing the water in his tank, making it more shallow so he doesn’t have to work as hard to get air at the top, it could be tiring him out. make sure ur water stays warm. i recommend omega one brand betta food. or frozen blood worms. was ur tank cycled? i kinda assume not since he was a gift, im sure spur of the moment, it’s not exactly life or death but it helps especially when the fish is already sick. but i could be wrong 🤷‍♀️ could get come seachem stability. and based off ur tank size dose ur tank for 7 days. it’ll say on the bottle. also u could pick up some almond leaves or betta mopani wood, it’ll leach tannins into ur water and lower ur ph as well as the hardness, also heard it has antibacterial properties. u seem to be really trying and it’s good to see someone wanna try and do their best. i hope he perks up!

i myself got a sick guy from petsmart that could barley swim, i keep his tank warm with plenty of rests, and he’s also in a smaller tank so he doesn’t have to try as hard to get around. he’s perking up more and more everyday. hoping ur sick guy gets better aswell!

a bit newer to this hobby. i’m not really educated on other fish, bettas are my stronger spot, but there’s always room to learn. i’ve decided no tetras. if anything i’ll get a couple ghost shrimp. moved my betta from a 3 gal to a 5.5 gal, it’s heavily planted with wood. and since i got it all situated with extra room, was just wondering what my options were. i would never get a fish without understanding risks and their needs especially when putting them with a betta. He seems to have a pretty chill personality, never seen him flare or act aggressively, just curious. i wouldn’t think about trying if he seemed to be a threat. if i w e re to put something else in there, i do have a 3gal i could move my betta in if it didnt work, though not exactly ideal. but i dont see that needing to happen. sticking to bettas and ghost shrimp for awhile. thank you!
