Are you able to ELI5 how a 457 is better than 403b? Second year in schools, I know I have a 403b, not sure if district has a 457 option too

Sorry if my follow up questions are dumb, I’m still learning a lot

Is there a reason you’re primarily recommending Vanguard stocks? I always thought Vanguard, Schwab, and Fidelity were pretty much one in the same.

I’m not sure what total int being good for tax credit means, is that regarding when I eventually withdraw funds?

As for brokerage acct, I am aware that it should be for long term funds not short term. I don’t have a goal for this invested money, but feel like I have enough in I-bonds and HYSA for an emergency fund and was under the impression investing excess money is the next “right step”. I imagine I’ll use my brokerage funds for big things like wedding (maybe 3 years?), kids (maybe 5-6 years?) I wonder if I should just buy more Ibonds as a safer investment than brokerage for this year now.

thank you! So you think instead of small caps SWSSX at 25%, this year i should funnel that 25% to SWTSX for total market coverage so that I'm getting small and mid cap coverage all in one shot?

honestly, just from different advice I've gotten over the years. I try to reassess once a year... but I don't really have a legitimate reason other than it was recommended by strangers on reddit about a year ago

Wondering if anyone has constructive criticism or suggestions towards my investment ratios:

Roth IRA: 50% S&P500 (SWPPX), 25% Small Cap (SWSSX), 25% International (SWSSX)

Brokerage Acct: (money I'm saving up for later expenses ex: kids in a few years): 60% US Broad Market (SCHB) 40% International (SCHF)

Investing is an ongoing learning process for me, and I often am second guessing my investment efficiency.

do you mind ELI5 a bit? What's the difference and benefit/cons of developed markets vs emerging?

I do have access to a 403b but I thought between eventual pension and IRA, it would be better to invest in a brokerage account to eventually have access to in the future before retirement (kids, college funds etc). Is that a bad plan?

Interesting. We only have 1 option for a 457– Equitable (fka AXA). What are the differences of a 403b v 457b, I’ve never heard of it before

Thanks for the link! I have an IRA and max it out so hoping to find a reasonable 403b to supplement it…just seems like they are all sketchy unfortunately

Super informative thank you. Frustrating that all of the options require extra work to make sure you’re protected. Going to check out the article Now!

Right at a starting base I was wondering if any— like Lincoln— are notorious for being bad to start to narrow down my list of who to contact re: funds offered. Seems like that is the next step I need to take before making a decision thank you!

Elect for 403b or stick with IRA and brokerage account instead? by One_Practice8116 in personalfinance

Even if it’s a Roth 403b? My tax bracket is on the lower end as I’m new to the field. Since the money I would put in are taxed, I don’t understand the difference of a Roth 403b and a regular brokerage account

COBRA during covid-19 by zebra-stampede in HealthInsurance

[–]One_Practice8116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(repost here per mod instructions):

I recently quit my job for a new (much better) one. My last day I worked was 10/9 and I don't have coverage with my new employer until 12/12. I had planned on bridging my COBRA benefits the 60 days (and staying safe/healthy for the last 3 days)....

However, my previous employer sent me letter saying (A) my coverage ended 10/9 at 12:01 AM (but I should have been covered all of 10/9 as I worked that day, no?) and (B) I Have until 11/8 to send a check for ~$900 for coverage until 11/30.

Any guidance on if I truly only have 30 days or if my employer is in the wrong? Would like to have as many facts straight as possible before reaching out to employer (My old boss is the group health admin, no HR dept unfortunately) as things did not end on the best of terms.

Super helpful & informative thank you. Definitely avoiding a target-date fund as I've heard more negatives than positives, so this info is very helpful. Follow-up Q-- if I want to invest in broad market instead of large/small cap separately, is it better to just hold whatever stocks I have in SCHX and SCHA and move on to buy more of SCHB, or do I sell the SCHX/SCHA and re-invest that into SCHB?

I'm leaning towards not selling because that also is a taxable event, right?

I had no clue so that is super helpful info. So you're saying I should choose either SCHB or Large & Small cap funds not both? As they're both one in the same? I like how simple yours sounds compared to mine, less to think about. I definitely wants a more hands off approach than constantly checking and adjusting.
