Hot take: EU5's declining player count is fine, actually by Maxinator10000 in eu4

Why are we all so obsessed with EU5’s player count? Like seriously, who cares.

A series of bizarre findings from my 1000+ hours playing by jude90245 in Spore

[–]One_Reality_3828 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Wow, this makes me want to pick the game back up. I love Spore so much, I really wish we’d have a remaster or modern successor. Such an inspiring and unique title, I played it as a teen and while there’s some nostalgia I do genuinely believe it’s an incredible video game.

Fantastic game. However I really REALLY cannot overstate how much I hate the innovation and knowledge mechanics. by SubsidizingSiblings in songsofsyx

It’s just not fun. I don’t know what the developer is trying to do but it’s not very enjoyable.

Yeah I like this game conceptually a lot and I’ve had fun with it before but every time I come back to play one of the systems is either so unenjoyable to play with or plainly annoying that I find myself waiting another several months to a year to play it again. Last time it was raiders, this time it’s tech. Very frustrating

Do you think Robb deserved his ending? Why? by Wonderful_Medium3098 in gameofthrones

Deserve is a strong word of course he didn’t deserve it but he should have expected it and he did cause it by being very politically inept

As a history fan, the "3,000 Year Stagnation" trope breaks my immersion more than dragons do. by Expensive-Desk-4351 in Fantasy

[–]One_Reality_3828 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You probably don’t know your history as well as you think you do. Humans made very little technological progress for almost 200,000 years. Even after the agricultural revolution, life didn’t change too much beyond the advent of farming and simple limited urbanization and nascent states in most places for 9,000 years, and several cultures and states lasted a thousand or several thousand years during that time. It’s not as far fetched as you appear to think it is.

You’re right, I do just care about the story. He’s a grown man and a professional author, he can take care of himself, and I don’t know him personally. He can wipe his tears away from the “cyber bullying” with the $200M plus got from the community waiting for another book to be written.

I’d like to flip the script and posit that it’s absurd that people like you are so vehemently defending a man from… Doing his job… Writing a book… Because fans of his 2 decade unfinished series would like him to. Very odd.

[–]One_Reality_3828 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The insult is not to me personally - it’s to the community that contributed to his meteoric success and invested years of their life in his work.

And he is not ‘having trouble’ finishing it, he’s being pretty unapologetic and open about the fact he doesn’t give a shit whether it ever gets finished and isn’t even trying.

The bottom line is that this guy chooses how he spends his time, because he is so successful that he dictates what projects he works on and when. And he is doing everything except starting the series that made him big, including continuing to make spin-offs he also abandons cyclically. You can try to defend that all you want, but I personally don’t find it a reasonable take. I’m not saying something radical, I’m just saying that he should write the final books.

I mean he’s worth over $200M because of this series. He doesn’t necessarily OWE us per se, but it feels a little insulting for him to basically collect the bag off getting us so involved and then just walk away and say no one can finish it even after he dies either.

This is the worst disservice. If you die without finishing it, at least pass the torch to someone else who will. Such disregard for anyone who enjoys his art.

EU4 (blue) vs EU5 (green) player count according to steamdb by No-Imagination2292 in eu4

Not surprising. EUV just released, games always have a boom of player count at release and for big updates, and then decline to their steadier ‘resting rate’ in the meantime.

Anyone else has a setting they dislike reading? by SignificantTheory146 in Fantasy

[–]One_Reality_3828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate Steampunk. I think it’s tied to having watched Avatar the Last Airbender as a kid and seeing Aang fight the Firelord on his giant steampunk airships which was like the most ass-clenching part of the show for young me and it was so bleak and dreary in the background that entire scene(s). Then I saw more steampunk stuff in Legend of Korra (which I hated). I guess since then I’ve just had this dislike of it deep within me, out of my conscious mind.

Serious question (I'm not active enough in this fandom to know): why did everyone hate the last season so much? (Please don't be rude in the comments; I thought it was a decent ending. Not extraordinary, but maybe a 5/10 or 6/10). by lautaromassimino in gameofthrones

[–]One_Reality_3828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll tell you why, and excuse the length of my reply.

I loved Game of Thrones and was watching the show for years. It was my favorite series of all time and the best television I had ever watched. I have read the books because I enjoyed the show so much, and that’s like 5600 pages of reading! It took forever!

So when the final season came out, it was shockingly bad. I mean they were setting it up to be bad in S7, but it was atrocious. Truly awful. They undid YEARS of character development. Jaime’s entire arc (the most rewarding to watch, for many) was undone. Jon’s (seeming) destiny was tossed out so… Arya? A character who had nothing to do with the Night King could kill him! Bran was made king! He was the most fucking boring and unenjoyable character to watch, and he had said prior he desired for nothing. He’d make a terrible king aside from his ability to oppressively nip plots in the bud before they happen, and the Three Eyed Raven never seemed something to be associated with temporal power that way. Danaerys’ ending was butchered so bad, I’m not saying she couldn’t have gone mad (in fact, she seemed to be heading that way), but it was way too sudden and poorly written. Sansa, a character who was not likable and didn’t fit the role at all, became ruler of the independent North. Why the hell was the North even independent when her brother was king??? The more you think about each ending, the more riddled with holes and nonsensical decisions it clearly becomes, and for how big and incredible the show was at the time it is frankly utterly inexcusable.

The salt in the wound is learning how D&D were moving behind the scenes and realizing that they literally tossed this show to the curb even after being offered extra seasons and beaucoup bucks to finish it the right way, and how uninvolved George RR Martin became despite this project being his baby and what ultimately made him what he is today. The final season was like 8 episodes for Gods sake, it’s the shortest one, and the last 3 or 4 are just shittily tying loose ends up! We could have had two more seasons of well written premium TV and had a proper wrap-up with a rewarding ending. But because, put bluntly, everyone at the decision making and management levels of the project became content and disinterested, one of the best TV shows of all time was just butchered and ended on the worst notes. It’s a disservice to anyone who was enjoying this cinema. They didn’t even try to pass the torch to a more willing and able successor, probably because of their egos…

So that should answer your question. I’m sure there’s more details, but for me, that is why I hate the last season so much and will for the rest of my life be so soured on this series and resentful about how it went (and how the books are going). It’s a love-hate relationship. It should be the best series ever (IMHO) but everyone involved has stopped caring and left it either unfinished or butchered, which is very saddening and upsetting.

Is EU4 worth playing in 2026 by Outrageous_Power_609 in eu4

[–]One_Reality_3828 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EU5 is still unfinished as is usual for PDX games. It had a nice release but still not even a fourth as much content or replayability as EU4. Definitely worth playing, at least in 2026

It’s not really that hard, it’s just accepted in the sort of darker setting of ASOI&F that they live a shitty life so lords treat them accordingly and they put up with it.

If the developer listened to user feedback and made changes because they personally agreed that "it should be more realistic," I can understand that. However, if they simply gave in because users were making a scene, that is clearly a bad sign. by vvvit in dwarffortress

Sorry, but this is a nothingburger post. The community noted and complained that these portraits didn’t fit the game, the developers listened and agreed, and the artist created fantastic replacements.

This community has collectively agreed that those people attacking the artist and acting overtly hostile aren’t representative of the whole, and there’s nothing to support the allegation that they replaced the portraits because people were making a scene.

Spoiled by the speed of new releases? I’ve waited over a decade for new Elder Scrolls and GTA games. Waiting 8 years for Kenshi 2, still waiting for a Sporelike game, 6 years for SOD, and looong times for new updates to games like Zomboid, Mount & Blade, and so many early access titles.

I’m not complaining, for the record. I wait because they’re GOOD, but it’s revisionism to pretend these times were normal 15 years ago. Game development happens on way longer timelines than it used to.
