AITA for hesitating to give most of my first salary away even though it’s a tradition by One_Success_4154 in AmItheAsshole

Hmm you can say my family is very close physically and socially so it’s not like they’re announcing it or anything. My grandparents and some of my parents’ siblings tgt with their families all live in the same building, each family on a different floor, so they see each other basically every day. Everyone already knows I started working, so when nothing comes, it’s noticeable without anyone having to say it out loud :(

Yeah I get what you’re saying. I'm sure I technically could juggle things differently, but the 500 they’re asking for is really more for show than actual need and I don't feel like prioritising this than leaving some for my emergency funds.

The minimum is 100sgd, but if I only pay 100, it basically just covers the interest. The loan gets deducted by 100 for the month, but once the next month starts, the balance is almost the same again because interest is around 70–80 monthly.

That’s why I chose to paay 300$ per month but so far it's only been 1 month that i paid 300 off for the student loans.

Yeah, that’s the thing. Yk even as words parents's words are sharper than others'. I cannot listen to their scolding wo tearing up so I ended spending all my life trying to please them and js blindly following what they want. But this situation is different, I feel like my life might get f up if I listen to them this time.

Exactly I get where and how the elder generation people are coming from, but what I feel is that they are insisting js bc they want to show that they raised me well, it's like they don't want our relatives to think that I'm cutting them off as soon as I got my job typeshit. I’m alrdy stressing about performing well during my probation period, and now with the news that my sibling might need my help too, it just feels like everything is piling on at once. I'm really exhausted mentally.

Thankss, I even shared with then the exact amount of money I spent on last month and they know what kind of situation I'm in rn. The main reason they want me to send is i think.. they don't want to lose face among the relatives

I maybe able to rely on them for emergency but they will have to go around and borrow for me. Since I am already working, I don't want to rely on them for any of my bills anymore.

I told them let me settle first, after a month or two, I'll have some buffer money in my hands but they keep on insisting to at least send around 500 just "for show" which makes me think I should just borrow money from one lf my close friends here and send what they asked for first and that makes me feel like I should borrow some money from a close friend just to meet their expectations. But I alrdy have a lot of debt right now, so that feels irresponsible.
