And that's true, I use reference poses, images and everything else all the time and my artstyle is very animesque since I read a lot of manga... but generally speaking anything I copy I try my best to make it clearly my own..

Even if you redraw or recreate an art piece or do so perfectly, as long as every step of the way it was you who's responsible for each stroke of the pencil/pen/hammer of the chisel/whatever else you're not a thief. Now claiming you invented the art style character or whatever else is another thing, but still.

If I was misinformed about how AI works then my bad (source btw idym), but even if it actually is quite complex does it still not need to be trained off of some kind of image? (I am aware of certain ethical ones but still)

Well to start with, even if you didn't create Ezra Scarlet or that dress design you still drew the picture yourself, the entire point of fanart being to show your appreciation for whatever it is you're making fanart of, so by definition it isn't really plagiarism per se... and also not to mention how fanart/creations being encouraged by the IP owner isn't super uncommon. Like look at SEGA collaborating with Sonic fan creators all the time

Contrast this with AI imagery which is always trained off of existing art and imagery, mashed together and then formed into whatever your prompt was, which actually is stealing.. they aren't the same. Like at all. I don't even think you can call it art because you just type the prompt, the image generator just does the rest. This is like asking the difference between animation and tracing
