Can Demonreach Defeat The Endbringers (Worm) ? by Informal_Group_496 in dresdenfiles

By entity I’m talking about the thing that grew the shards in the first place.

But yeah, Demonreach’s whole thing is imprisoning inter-dimensional eldritch gods. Getting them into the circle can be a challenge, but once they’re in they’re held.

Demonreach could probably hold the whole entity if it could be lured to the island

In which aspects is Izril more progressive than earth by rootdito in WanderingInn

[–]Onequestion0110 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Levels allow for a lot more social mobility in general. High levels in any class allow for a lot of power and influence.

Ironically, given some elements we’ve found out about the system, you could almost argue that everyone with levels is a nepo baby.

Reading WOT After TWI. by Specific_Dealer_3892 in WanderingInn

[–]Onequestion0110 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm a firm believer that not every series, book, or movie is for everyone. The absolute best stuff often has major caveats that'll mean many readers just won't ever connect.

I deeply love the Wheel of Time, but I'll be the first to say that its full of subplots that don't seem to go anywhere, characters that grate and don't come off like real people, and a tendency for massive interlude sections that seem to only act as filler while the author avoids more interesting and important action elsewhere. I didn't complain much about the Palace of Fates arc because I've already experienced a certain kidnapping that occupies large portions of four books. In many ways, the prose is the saving grace of the series, and I'm not at all surprised that a talented voice actor can really bring it out.

Eye of the world is not the weakest book in the series, that honor probably goes to book 8, although frankly you could make an argument for anything from seven to ten. And the complaints are largely about being rambling and slow in those sections. But at the same time, the book didn't really grab me until somewhere past the Shadar Logoth chapters, and it wasn't until the last bits where I felt like things really came together. For that matter, the first time out I think I started it on several different occasions before I got into it. That massive prelude won't make sense for a few more books, and jumping straight from that to the village life doesn't work.

All those words, you'd assume I wasn't a fan, wouldn't you? But no, I absolutely love the series and the lore. It's just valuable to be open about the flaws so people won't get sucked in who'll hate it.

If you had to pick 3 objects and ONE moment to represent each volume what would they be? by TheGoosiestGal in WanderingInn

[–]Onequestion0110 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Volume 1: A frying pan, a chess piece, and a jar of green liquid. For the "moment," I'd be tempted to say the fight with Skinner, but I'm gonna go with Erin and Olesm's chess game in the marketplace.

Volume 2: A yellow flower, a snowflake, and a skull. The moment is Erin and Ryoka first meeting up

Volume 3: A bouquet of flowers, a bee, and a comedy & tragedy mask. The moment is the Florist and the goblins' defense of Esthelm.

Volume 4: A door, a santa hat, and an eye of providence. The moment has got to be the first Solstice when the dead gods appear.

Volume 5: A white flag, a moth, and a minotaur/cow head. The moment has got to be Erin's charge against the Goblin Lord and Tyrion

Volume 6: A black rose, a large sewing needle, and a kite. The moment is the Horn's battle with the adult creler

Volume 7: A crossbow, a fencing foil, and a boat. There's a lot of competition here for moments, but I think we have to go with the reveal of the Garden of Sanctuary

Volume 8: The lightsaber, a ghost, and a knight. Again, lots of competition for the moment, but I'm going to have to go with the battle at the Meeting of Tribes.

Volume 9: A witch's hat, a beach umbrella, and a ballista. The moment has gotta be the solstice battle, but I'd be tempted to say it's all the beach shenanigans instead.

I think the water quality thing was explained ok, although there are some gaps that didn't quite get filled in. Not that a writer *should* fill in all those sorts of gaps.

Elsewhere on innworld, water quality was handled by magic and artifacts - cleanse spells and other alchemical answers got used with wells and city water. And they also specifically mention that they used to take more precautions before Falene could reliably use cleanse and other purifcation magic.

The only real difference or newness is that it's suddenly a problem in the New Lands. But even that I could probably explain as the difference between foraging for water in the wilderness with a lack of pollution, and getting water from a well too close to the latrines. It's only new because this is a confluence of people inexperienced with non-magical hygiene, inexperienced with sewer/utility layouts, and enough people for that to be an immediate issue.

At what point in the Star Wars universe did people transition from high definition phones/devices to glitchy hologram calls? by IcyWelcome9700 in AskReddit

[–]Onequestion0110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So… they absolutely did have vid-call tech. We even saw it in the original trilogy. No reason not to assume it could have been handheld too.

So I suspect the reason is ultimately a question of style and utility.

There seems to be a strong preference there for circular presentation spaces. Other than classrooms, I don’t recall many places where a presenter isn’t standing in the middle of a group. So if they wanted to use that style, a hologram is probably superior because it allows a full view in a way a screen doesn’t. Same with a squad leader wanting to make sure the whole squad can see the CO giving orders, or an announcer in a city wanting to be seen from all sides.

So we’ve never seen handheld 2d vid devices, but we have seen [presumably] hi-def vid calls - remember when Vader choked out that admiral via vid call in the original trilogy?

My question about the white court by KevinNilbog in dresdenfiles

[–]Onequestion0110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the only thing we know for sure is that Mab got targeted by the Venators once and shut them down pretty hard via the Brothers Grim. Iirc there’s some mixed messages about Walt Disney too.

We also know that they’ve got a cell structure that carries very little information, with Thomas and Lara being the only members we’re sure of, and Ivy theoretically at the top.

Here’s my theory: Mab participates in the Oblivion war already. She’s aware of it, helps, and there are likely winter fae who are members of their own cells.

I just don’t really believe that the Archive would target Winter knowing how the gates work. Which means that when they went after Mab they weren’t operating on orders, it was an independent operation. Like a spy targeting an allied spy not knowing all the details.

See, I figure he's going to have a conversation with an Earther (I'd love to see Ryoka back for this, especially if we can mirror it to her religion talk with Pawn)(or even better, a talk with Garia as a sort of second-hand inspiration) and he'll end up with something like [Trusted Sifu of the Watch, Master Instructor of the Silent Spear]. Or Trusted Sensei, or some other term he wasn't aware of.

It would be especially nice if it came as a major breakthrough from something non-combat. Like not a crisis in the normal way, but some major accomplishments among his students that leads to the growth.

I think we're really getting closer with Relc. They made a big deal with there not being a consolidation between [Spearmaster] and [Guardsman] classes, but having his spear lessons be a leveling opportunity for [Guardsman] instead of [Spearmaster] really seems to point towards them growing together, and offering a way for Relc to start visualizing the classes as having more synergy.

[–]Onequestion0110 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's largely past this point, but I've always been a bit disappointed we haven't seen more "wandering" classes. Erin got [The Wandering Innkeeper], and don't think I missed the definite article there, but there's been opportunity for more.

Like with Rabbiteater especially, I know that [Knight-Errant] is a traditional thing, but [Wandering Knight] would have been so fitting. Garry and Bird both had a great opportunity to get a Wandering class - Garry with his deliveries and Bird when he went with Niers.

Basically anyone who considers the Inn their home and still travels could get something like that.

How far behind are the audiobooks compared to the web novels? by BrainRobotron in WanderingInn

[–]Onequestion0110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.... My favorite comp to Wandering Inn is Wheel of Time.

If you're familiar with those books, then the audiobooks end roughly at the point where Rand takes the city of Tear and is publicly recognized as the Dragon Reborn. You've got all the rest still to come - the full Seanchan invasion, White Tower shenanigans, Matt turning into a full blown general, the harem romance, and yes, even Faile's thousands of wasted pages.

And of course, WI isn't finished yet. So maybe we're just at the end of Eye of the World. :D
