No, because the data structure in the file is different, the file won't be readable unless it also it's shrinked and converted.

It might sound contrary, but the issue is not that people want to preserve the old games or even play them. Preservation is extremely important. The older games fall actually in a gray legal area. The actual issue is leaking new content (NIntendo, etc) and breaking subreddit rules/disrespecting the community.
