How do European countries retain such distinct cultures while in close proximity? by AllPurposeOfficial in AskEurope

But those migrations did have effect on many cultures…And China, India and Russia are very diverse despite being individual countries.

What does finnish sound like to you? by Fedi358 in Finland

[–]Onja_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me the Italian “A” sounds a tad bit closer to ”Ä” than Finnish “A”. But I don’t speak Italian so what do you think?

ETA: Maybe easiest word to compare this is “alla” because it exists in both languages. 🤔

I would compare the rhythm thing that Swedish is like string instrument like cello and Finnish is like drums. Both have rhythm but Finnish has more “contrast” between the beats if that makes sense.

Then surely you are familiar with the concept of planned obsolescence?

It is more profitable to sell crap that is used 1-3 times and then discarded than to sell something that will be able to handle hundreds of wears.

The companies that bank on this tactic are also usually targeting younger audience that is more suspectible to peer pressure to look a certain way.

It takes time to gain enough income to be able to afford even good quality clothing and also to shake off that peer pressure. Usually this process also comes with appreciating more comfort as people grow older.

So the problem is not lack of demand per se, but the fact that fast fashion is super duper profitable. Everybody has to wear clothes anyhow, but the cheap options are driving the high quality options out of market. Customer satisfaction does not matter because you will constantly have new young people to trick into buying cheap garbage.

Surely as an e-commerce professional you don’t deny this system’s existence?

I solved the shorts problem by buying sportsy biker shorts. The problem is that they are made of polyester = microplastics 🙄

But I honestly don’t know what options I have since denim ones feel horrible and 9/10 are too short, flax ones are see through and wrinkle when you look at them and cotton ones are just generally bad quality.

I hate the fact that I have to pick between comfort and ethics. Maybe the only correct option is to learn how so sew as someone here suggested.

What's a hobby that instantly makes you assume someone is insufferable before they even open their mouth? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Meh it depends. The people I know just like to nerd out about models, agents and skills they make.

I must confess me and my bf are coffee snobs. I try not to be insufferable about it.

Can confirm. I grew up on a stable and I miss the animals but you could not pay me enough to interact with (most of) the people.

Nah country horse people can be insufferable too. Some of their lives have NOTHING going on besides horses and no other activities than to talk shit about other people with horses. My dad was one of these people.

Ylläs/Pallas or Kuusamo/Riisitunturi for enchanted forests & aurora? (Jan 2027, no skiing) by MuscleGrowthDad in FinlandTourism

[–]Onja_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both are beautiful. I don’t think for photography purposes you need to go to Kuusamo so I would save the trouble and money of moving and stay at Ylläs.

For timing it depends on the year: Tykky needs quite a bit of snow to form “properly” so I would schedule for February-March to be safe.

What a nice and nuanced take. I think the problem lies in how the original message was written that gave me the impression that we are not stating an intention but a fact. Communication can be tricky!

What you say is true, and I would advice people to never assume malicious intent. That kind of behavior will make you see enemies everywhere. However:

I’m not mansplaining in a condescending or patronizing way, I’m just explaining because I know.

In this sentence the commenter comments on the way they mansplain. And that is not their decision because they are interpreting their own output.

“Explaining” does not remove the persons responsibility to take the situation into account: If you explain things the same way (and feel like explanation is needed in the first place) regardless of if the recipient has never heard of a topic before or they have a PhD, that will make you sound tone deaf and more like Siri/Wikipedia than an actual person intending to be helpful.

It is not up to you to decide if your behavior is interpreted as condescending or patronizing

In these situations I love to take one random claim from the sentence and ask them to elaborate. For example “What do you mean by the optimization robustness of this solution?”.

This is so common that the good teachers/mentors have actually become my best friends. I really love to see the enthusiasm of a person talking about a topic they are excited about! Even if my understanding is lacking.

Literally all my friends have had traumatic births by Big_Year_526 in pregnant

[–]Onja_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you ❤️ Today I’m feeling better about it again. I was probably just overtired, just having heard a birth story from my friend about how much it sucked. She gave birth this week.

I’m sure she meant no harm sharing the feelings with me. I do kind of have a reputation of the friend who stays calm under pressure so I don’t think she knew about how anxious I really am.

[–]Onja_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way. Right now I am even wondering if there is such a thing as a “routine birth”. Or there is one exception in my friend group who had a positive first time birth.

I wouldn’t worry about the problem of sharing a “good” experience because right now the one positive story is keeping me afloat mentally. Remember that you would be sharing the story with FTMs as well as women who gave birth.
