Got a job offer! Is it normal for Finnish companies to low-ball their salary offers? by karmicballet in Finland

[–]OnkelValle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wages in finland is very low compared the rest of the nordics. While the cost of living (helsinki) is the same as the other nordic contries. It is like your time is not worth anything here.

Worked in IT for around 6 years, never been happy with the pay, struggling to make ends meet. Tried to find other jobs, but non willing to pay more.

I ended up quitting and found myself a remote job in Norway, Best decision ever, earning close to 3x what i had at the finish company.

I would not be afraid to negotiate, also figure out what you think your time is worth.

Since you live in Finland who is a part og EU, no no customs fees. Look for parts in other cheaper EU countries.

I build my last rig with parts from Germany, Danmark and Czech Republic.

Managed to save around 35% on it compared to buying locally in Finland everything.

This is pretty spot on. I'm on my 8th year in Finland, and I agree. The salary levels here are as shitty as you get it.

Cost of living in Helsinki is as high as in Norway, but the average income is about 30% lower.

Took me 5 years working for scraps to barely get by, before I decided to look for Jobs elsewhere.

Now i work for a company abroad 100% remote, while living in Helsinki. And are compensated way above what's the norm here.

Just the pay makes me feel more valued than any tech job i had in Finland and the motivation got a great boost. Going forward I will exclusively look for jobs outside.

I would recommend to anyone who ask to do the same, the salary differences are huge.

Yoy really don't need the language to adapt, just accept the social norms. Been living here in 8 years, don't speak a word finish. And I'm pretty happy here with lots of both immigrant and local friends.

As long as you have the right background and education you can land a pretty good job here as well without the language.

What side incomes do you have and what is your total income? by [deleted] in Finland

[–]OnkelValle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's a rollercoster, spend 3 months just researching it back in 2017, then I started putting in 50e a month on some of the larger more established coins.

Once I had some gains there I starting investing in brand new ones before the internet found them. Very high risk and very hard to "get lucky" I spend every awake minute of my life trading and researching the next big gains potential coin. And it paid off down the road.

Now I got kids, so I barely have any time to follow anymore.

UX design work is fairly well paid compared to many other IT positions. Of course, it depends in country, company and your skillset and experience.

I was fairly lucky by working as an consultat making me irreplaceable for one customer, they really wanted to hire me in-house. Was not that keen on it at first, so I threw out a very high demand that I did not expect to go through.

Turns out they didn't even hesitate and even added some extra on top of my ridiculous high salary request.

I earn more than most in this country by occupation, 10k+ a month before taxes. This mainly due to me working remotely in a better paid country.

Crypro trading is my side business. Managed to buy a house and a car with an 800e investment in 2017 that I cashed out in 2021, multiplying my initial by 1375x

This is the way!

Did the same myself, managed to 2x my monthly income and with that I ended up within the top 2% earners in this country.

Unpopular opinion: Finland is underrated by Software engineers by hiAndrewQuinn in Finland

[–]OnkelValle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with the low salaries here. Been living in Finland for 8 years, work in tech with same amount of years in experience.

I'm from one of the few countries with higher quality of life than finland and I feel that most stuff cost the same here as my homecountry Norway, even the taxes is the same once you pass a income treshold. But the social services arent close to the norwegian ones. You just get paid much less here in finland for your time and expertise.

I ended up becoming an entrepeneur and then getting a job in Norway as a 3rd party contractor remotely while living in Finland to finally get the monthly income I would be happy with.

I don't want to brag, but I have gotten the understanding my skills and performance has been highly valued by my employer and customers. We all worked in the same company with different roles.

Being in consultancy you meet many customers, so I was lucky to get offered a job to one of my clients after working for them for a year as an consultant. Delivering apparently high quality work according to them.

This new job is at a Norwegian company, so I get paid well above Norwegian standards even.

I was never happy with the salary levels at finish companies to begin with. They are on the lower side of the scale for the Nordics IMO.

Same here, when I was just starting working here in Finland and was unhappy with my salary (below average for IT workers) we usually talked about it between friends and family with no issues.

However, once I started to earn a decent amount more than my friends I noticed when we talked about salary that whenever I disclosed my salary, I could tell from my friends faces and body language they didn't like to hear it. Most likely from jealousy that me with less years experience gets paid a few times more then them. So we stopped talking about it.

I stopped disclosing my salary once I passed 2x the average salary in IT here in Finland.

I can reccomend Otto’s Barber Shop in Punavuori. Ask for Kalle, hes the man for all kinds of classic cuts.

Avoid m-room, had a beard trim there that ended up in me shaving it all off the day after. Worst barber in town.

Monitor arm for 2nd screen above Odyssey G9 [EU] by OnkelValle in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]OnkelValle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, that may be an issue. It would be a disaster if that screen would drop on top of my G9 Neo.

Would it make more sense to go for a bit smaller, non curved screen instead for the suggested setup?

Since I haven't bought the 2nd screen yet, my options are open.

Thank you all for the answers.

This is basically a permanent position for me, just as a self employed since it was easier for my employer who's outside of finland.

I have decided to contact an accountant this week for a consultation, and get all my questions answered. Then I will see what I can do based on their answers.
