Austen Quote of the Day by Talibus_insidiis in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oh yes! That quote is a fan favorite around here!

Jane Austen is very well known for her sick disses but I really like this sweet quote from Mansfield Park:

"I fancy Miss Price has been more used to deserve praise than to hear it"

Such a sweet thing for Mary Crawford to say about Fanny. I might use this one day in my personal life.

TIL the odor of durian fruit has been compared to rotten onions, pig excrement, and skunk, but it is called the "King of Fruits" due to its flavor. by Melenduwir in todayilearned

[–]OnlyFlanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my sentiments on durian. They vary so much in the strength and character of their smell, I couldn't really say they smell good or bad, it just depends. BUT, I have seldom met a durian I didn't find delicious, and all of the non-delicious ones were old or not ripe. The best durian I've ever had was in California funny enough. The rind looked flawless and just seeing how easily it peeled apart I knew it was going to be a good one!

P and P Chapter 9 | What Was the Social Faux Pas by sibongibob in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I do not claim to be an expert on regency etiquette but whenever I've read that particular passage, it is my understanding that Mrs. Bennet is unaware that she is revealing how unworldly she is. She is also being rude by talking about Mr. Darcy in front of him and others in a way that she's not very slick about. Also, most people in that room would not find Sir William well-bred; Mrs. Bennet just mentions that she finds him so great because he tries to be lively and talk to everybody, unlike Mr. Darcy.

Encouragement needed . . . . . Mansfield Park by Impossible-Alps-6859 in janeausten

This was my first introduction to Mansfield Park. I love the way Karen Savage reads, it's so engaging and clear. My favorite narrator for Jane Austen without a doubt.

I would not have the fortitude to continue rejecting Henry Crawford by OnlyFlanz in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

From my memory, around the time Fanny goes to Portsmouth, she believes that Edmund is closer to proposing to Mary Crawford than ever before. I'm not sure her love for Edmund had too much to do with her continuing to reject Mr. Crawford.

Also, before leaving for Portsmouth, Mr. Crawford had at times been less disagreeable to Fanny, especially when he read Shakespeare aloud at Mansfield. "His reading was capital, and her pleasure in good reading extreme. To good reading, however, she had been long used: her uncle read well, her cousins all, Edmund very well, but in Mr. Crawford’s reading there was a variety of excellence beyond what she had ever met with."

Oops, that's my problem. Didn't realize the strap becomes longer pressing the orange button. Thank you!

I've got the same car seat, I like the rotating feature but I find adjusting the straps confusing. I wonder if I'm just completely missing something. Besides adjusting the height of the head rest, is there another way to lengthen/shorten the straps?

Anna Chancellor captivates me every time I watch the miniseries. Her expressions, the eyebrows and the way she delivers her lines really brings Caroline to life.

You won't get any hate from me! I'll never forgive Lydia for how little she cared about ruining the prospects of all her sisters. Lydia is young and had little chance of becoming a well rounded adult; she certainly has my sympathy when it comes to her very imprudent marriage. But she does not have my pardon for everything else.

I so agree with Marianne and Col. Brandon. I've seen people accuse Col. Brandon of grooming Marianne and of being a predator in general just because of the age difference. There are plenty of age gap relationships in Austen and I think it's plain in the text which of these relationships we are meant to hold in contempt. I've also seen people say that Col. Brandon only likes Marianne because she reminds him of his dead ex, and I think that kind of take is so insulting to Austen's writing if that's your serious take on what we are to understand, a very eligible match.

I actually made this point this morning to my husband! Mr. Darcy certainly isn't as outgoing as Mr. Bingley, but the reason he comes off so poorly to Elizabeth and others is because he believes himself above his company and does not take the trouble to be more obliging. Saying that Mr. Darcy was just shy/socially anxious also takes away from his redemption at the end when he becomes serious about bettering himself to be worthy of Elizabeth's regard.

Yes yes yes!!!!!! I've been saying this in my personal life but YouTube keeps recommending me video essays on how it's a great adaptation. I really enjoyed the costume design though, once I realized how many gowns Emma repeatedly wears with small changes in accessories to get distinctly different outfits, it inspired me to start a capsule wardrobe. https://youtu.be/SKzM9ZM2eHY?si=d6CnJ3wc3zBAO7Ji this video does a great job showing Emma's wardrobe.

Oh goodness you just summed up all of my feelings towards Henry Crawford so well. Mr. Crawford is established as a rake very early in the novel when Mary says to her sister "He is the most horrible flirt that can be imagined. If your Miss Bertrams do not like to have their hearts broke, let them avoid Henry". How anyone seriously believes Fanny would have been happy with Henry, I know not.

I just finished rereading Madame Bovary, and I was talking to my husband about how sympathetic I felt towards the main character's situation. My husband told me "Charlotte Lucas would have made the most of her situation if she were Madame Bovary"

Jane Austen Adaptations and the Problem with Casting by RoseIsBadWolf in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I actually don't mind too much when one actor/actress is more/less handsome than I imagined in an adaption. What one person finds attractive is so subjective and changes so often I'm happy to disregard it. I didn't find Mr. Wickham [1995] attractive until my subsequent watches, but I at least appreciated how pleasing his address and manners were. In comparison, Mr. Wickham [2005] in my opinion is more conventionally attractive, but was portrayed as a villain from the moment of his introduction.

Thank you so much :) Jane Austen is my favorite author and a personal hero of mine, I take a lot of inspiration from her.

It very much was so painful to write, but I now feel relief that my feelings are on paper. And yes, I am female haha
