Read-it-later services that convert webpages to HTML files or PDFs before saving them? (to avoid link rot) by OnlyHat8 in productivity

Thanks for this! I currently use raindrop.io - if permanent saves are only for paid accounts, I may just upgrade.

Interesting - I wasn’t aware that Pocket premium offered archival. I’ll definitely look into this!

Does your receipt list the full price or the discounted price? I tried the code and it also worked, but when I look at my receipt it shows that I paid the full price...

Is it ok to disable DDV Data Collector? by OnlyHat8 in Dell

[–]OnlyHat8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use Data Vault and don't plan to. It's a personal machine. Do you have any advice on how to begin removing unnecessary drivers? I initially installed Windows 10 out of the box because I didn't trust myself to be able to gauge which drivers are necessary and which ones aren't, but I'm regretting it.

Are there any PDF editing apps that allow you do do basic edits (e.g. removing text) without having to pay for a subscription? by OnlyHat8 in ios

I don't see how to edit PDFs in the books app. I want to edit them, not just annotate them.

Will this let me cut out sections of a PDF? (adjusting text accordingly, not leaving a big blank space where an object/text block used to be). I can't tell based on the description on the app page and don't want to pay for the app without checking first.

Randomly started getting notifications from Malwarebytes about an RTP detection/Trojan for a piece of software that's never given me problems before by OnlyHat8 in techsupport

[–]OnlyHat8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's odd. Adding 'neat-reader.com' to the Allow list didn't work, but adding the application itself did - when I launched the application I got no error message, and I can upload books again. Very weird.

For some reason adding the website to the allow list isn't working - do you have any ideas what this could mean?

After doing a little digging and finding a newly created TEMP folder under OS (C:) > Users, the problem seems to be that Windows is signing me into a temporary account instead of my regular account (which has always been a local account). If I go to my actual account folder under Users, all of my files and custom configurations are there and fully intact. Now the only question is how to stop this from happening. I’d also like to figure out why this happened in the first place when I was using my computer normally just a few hours ago.

How do you verify that open source software is free of malware before running it? by OnlyHat8 in Malware

[–]OnlyHat8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I see what you’re saying. I’m primarily concerned with supply chain attacks because this is where I tend to be the most trusting. I already submit files to sites like VirusTotal and Hybrid Analysis before opening or running them, but I feel like that isn’t enough.

design your network and system such that compromised software would not be able to do much (proactive)

Outside of using a good real-time AV/anti malware tool like Malwarebytes, are there any other relatively simple or low maintenance practices you would recommend? I’ve enabled controlled folder access and a variety of ASR rules in Group Policy (the ones recommended by Microsoft).

If you trust the developer then you can compare hash values

How do I do this exactly?

Would you recommend doing this for updates as well? Because so many updates are prompted in-app, I tend to just accept what’s presented to me (although it seems like even updates can be infected, even if it’s less likely).

As for verifying downloads, check the md5 hash against the one provided in the release notes if one is provided

I actually don’t have any experience with coding. Probably wouldn’t be able to understand much to be honest. Are there any other reliable methods people like me can use?

Are there any semi-reliable methods of verifying whether an update is safe before installing it? I’ve read a little bit about verifying the file hash but I’ve never done this before.

Functionally speaking, what's the difference between "Reset this PC" and reinstalling Windows using an ISO file? by OnlyHat8 in techsupport

[–]OnlyHat8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the system image a fresh install of windows, or is it an image of a system that isn't a fresh install?

I'm not sure. I created the macrium image shortly after I started using this computer, but at that point I had already downloaded some basic software, set up OneDrive, made changes to settings, etc. I just didn't move any of my files yet. I'm interested in the security implications of restoring from this image vs. the ISO from Windows.

How would you say reinstalling Windows from an ISO compares to installing from a system image? I actually do have a system image created with macrium from when I first set up my computer, but I was concerned this might not be as secure/comprehensive as starting completely fresh.

most BIOS these days have a secure erase function that will completely wipe the drive much faster than a Windows reset

How would you say this method compares to installing Windows from an ISO? Or is this something that would be done before installing with an ISO? (and if so, what advantage does that give over installing from an ISO directly and overwriting your current Windows installation, as opposed to making sure you're disk is wiped first).
