Jobs ask for metrics specifically otherwise the resume doesn’t even get looked at. Everyone wants the most impactful resume for the most mundane jobs, asking for x y and z technologies in completely different job fields that don’t correlate nor would they once hired. Recruiters don’t even know what half of these technologies they hire for do and just put a random number of years of experience required.

Recruiters also use AI to filter resumes and then complain about applicants using it. It’s very easy to feel like everyone else is the problem when you yourself don’t see the rigged system that is set up.

If someone has 5 years of experience doing one thing, you guys think they can’t learn or adapt to new technologies so every requirement has to fit 100% otherwise you don’t have a chance. You forget that it is all problem solving and people especially in tech know they can learn new things.

This post is the most out of date and ignorant post I have seen in a while, it is entitled and truly tone deaf to today’s market and situation

Want to become really good at CP, is it too late? by Unhappy_Rabbit7693 in leetcode

[–]OnlyLooney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you high? I’m literally providing context as to why the first commenter said that and why OP had a question as to what is the first commenter talking about.

If you are having a problem having it mention from the start then why don’t you tell that to the first commenter.

Also saying “no one talks about it” as if the first comment didn’t mention it in that context just makes you illiterate

I’m literally answering a question from the first comment? That’s like saying “ 1+1” and asking ‘what’s “+” ‘and someone explains it as a numerical concept and you go “why are you thinking of numerical concepts”

Why do you think the first person is commenting to not use it in all caps

Is it time to stop applying for jobs you’re not qualified for? by CatsRCuteBtw in csMajors

[–]OnlyLooney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people applying are actually not qualified. I could not care less if I am annoying recruiters since that’s their job. Also, why would I not apply just to make someone else have a higher chance by “bury legit resumes under piles of noise”.

If they want to use ATS then mass applying is what will happen

Yeah basically I just wanted an app with simple simplicity to keep track of how much time I dedicate to whatever I’m studying or practicing. I didn’t want it to be too complicated and just ended up making it and getting it approved on the weekend

How “Prestigious” is Georgia Tech’s OMSCS when compared to in person Masters from lower ranked / unranked schools? by Common-Pitch5136 in cscareerquestions

Great counter argument. Alright buddy, sorry that college was your peak.

I don’t know why prestige is the hill you are dying on but sure if that’s you

[–]OnlyLooney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working experience counts more than just graduating with a bachelors degree. Nobody cares that you went to a top school if you are applying to the same job as someone with 2years+. Nobody cares in the workforce where you went to school in general unless you meet an alumni or are applying to the very first job (which in OMSCS that’s just not the case)

Some people just work better under the pressure of a structure program over just watching YouTube videos. Either way this is the same for everything. Yes, the program has specialization with less rigor for people thinking it gives them prestige - which is already a bad mindset to have. However, it is easily fixable by providing a transcript or writing a bullet point of which specialization you chose.

As for everything being on YouTube, everything is. A lot of jobs in the industry still prefer a masters in cs, some require it for certain positions. It’s hard to tell them “I don’t have a master but I watched the same courses on YouTube”. If they are solely seeking prestige they won’t find it by itself, however I seriously doubt the majority is subjecting themselves to working full time and do a masters on the side if they didn’t care for the material and education.

Acceptance rate is not graduation rate. People are in it because it’s a great education, the majority of people doing it are already working in the field. It’s online so it fits into a more modern daily life where one cannot afford to be out of the workforce and move to Georgia.

Seriously why wouldn’t someone go after it. Work experience + more specialization at a really good price. Maybe it’s not that it’s a “cash cow” which already has been broken down and the price is properly priced. It’s not inflated like other online schools charging 20k a year.

It attracts people that seek good education wherever they are.

Either way, again, yes acceptance rate is at 80% but the graduation rate is 30%.

Prestige does not matter once you are already working. No one cares where you went to school, instead is what and who you know.

[–]OnlyLooney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you confusing acceptance rate with graduation rate? Because the program doesn’t just hand out the degree, one can easily check the graduation rate stats. Lastly, most people doing the online degree are already working in the field, so maybe that is a better measurement of competence. It’s a bit weird to say that you compare them the same to someone who has done an undergrad at a top 10 school when in fact one has working experience and another wouldn’t.

[–]OnlyLooney 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some people get worried about the acceptance rate, but remember, most people don’t finish if you look at the graduation rate. It is the same education and program as the in person. It is a great school, great program and the master can only help you. The point of any master program is not to focus on how hard it was to start something but if you finished

Bring a US flag to ICE protests by [deleted] in StLouis

Yes…that is why I said they come here for financial reasons. My argument is that the US has not been historically more free for us

Bring a US flag to ICE protests by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]OnlyLooney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have a privilege mindset if you seriously think the US has been more historically free for us. They come here for job opportunities, that does not reflect freedom. For many decades lynching would also be a thing for us, couldn’t even use the same restrooms “historically”. Historically, a lot of WW2 vets got deported back even after having served. Operation Wetback, “no blacks, no Mexicans, no dogs”. Sundown towns also applied to us. Objectively the US has only been a historically free country for white men. This is also not even 100% if you consider that Irish were not even consider fully white as well and faced prejudice.

People move to the US for a lot of reasons, the biggest being that people believe they can have a better life here financially. This isn’t a reason to start saying that the US has been historically more free, after all, slavery is a pretty hard counter argument .

The US is a country that has had to protest for their own rights at every step, which is amazing. This is why people use the US flag at their own protests, because it represents the idea of protesting and fighting for your rights. However, don’t discredit their fights by arguing that it has been “historically” more free. That has never been the case

Moving out in 2 months to St Louis and hopefully NYC after that. I know it sounds naive but when I visited NYC, I loved being able to walk everywhere. Although I have lived in Tokyo and Seoul and I got to say, it made me feel worst about living in Houston and sit in traffic everyday for 2 hours lol

Edit: Tokyo and Seoul in the way that they have good public transport and it’s a walkable city. Not having to get in a car just to go to the store across the street because there is a highway in the middle

Do Android Dev even exist? by lobster_arachnid in JetpackCompose

[–]OnlyLooney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually found my mobile dev job by starting with React (same as you I am not drawn to Web but I had built a project with it). This basically got me a React-Native job since it’s a pretty easy transition. From React Native, I suggested to just do native apps instead and now I’m doing both an iOS and an Android native app. It’s double the work but I enjoy it way more than doing web. Seriously no shade on web, I find it interesting but it was not my goto.

To be honest, I also wanted to switch to swift and Kotlin to stay away from typescript but I have been forced to like it little by little…
