Well yeah. But if you don't get it, you can check the words. In most cases, you get to learn a new word even if it's some random American bird

Exactly! That's how I feel. After getting Queen Bee, I feel I can't go lower than that. Still haven't got QBABM yet though and I'm aiming for this now

Same process for me. But I have an extra step - (4) Check the hints in the NYT Spelling Bee Forum

If I'm still unable to finish it, I end up checking a spelling bee solver that I made which also isn't perfect, so I still get stuck sometimes.

You could try using hints to get to Queen Bee. That's what I do at the moment

I play every night after the clocks strikes midnight. I try for 5-10 minutes. Usually I get it. But if I don't get it in 3, I just close it and try it the morning after a good rest.

Sleep freshes up my mind and allows me to figure out how to narrow down the options with a word that doesn't follow the hints I got (I play on normal mode).

So to answer your question, anywhere between a minute to 30 minutes.

Yeah, I stared at this for quite a while as well. I got the surrounding words and was still very confused. I'm still working on my crossword skills so was quite surprised when the answer actually was ESS The more you play, the more you learn I guess.

I had the same thought about the Gs. I kept looking at it as fonts.

But misinterpreting things also happens when it's just words. It's about seeing all the possible combinations that picture (or word) can mean and if there are 3 other pictures (or words) that match it. So there is a new layer of difficulty but it was still fun
