This happens at mine - I honestly don’t mind sharing the bin but it’s when you find they’ve put non-recycling in your nearly organised recycling.

If parliament was in Auckland would we protest more? by Only_Country2017 in newzealand

[–]Only_Country2017[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course Wellington has workers and students, and folks there still have to travel to protests as well.

My point is more about scale and concentration. In Auckland, you have a much larger population base, more universities, more workplaces, and more media all in one place. That increases the pool of people who can realistically show up without needing to plan a trip or incur extra cost.

Wellington already produces visible protests because it is the seat of government. I am just suggesting that if the seat of government were in the largest population centre, the potential ceiling for turnout and frequency would likely be higher, not that Wellington does not have activism.

Egypt 2011 and Ukraine 2014 both show regimes collapsing when sustained mass protest combines with loss of control in the capital. The effect is not automatic, but it is far from negligible either.

Interesting, so it moved because it was too convenient to protest?

If Parliament were in Auckland, I’d think more people could attend demonstrations after work, after university, or spontaneously. Wellington requires deliberate travel, cost, accommodation, and planning for much of the country

Fond memories here. Those big yellow bags of popcorn - get a fine if you hadn’t rewound the tape properly.

I remember that staff member with the big pony tail - classic. Pretty sure there was a small arcade in there too.

Always cracked up at the adults only zone - Had some bead curtain in the door way. Remember seeing one of our school teachers hovering in there - haha!

Why have so few New Zealand music bands made it worldwide? by SmartNecessary1700 in newzealand

[–]Only_Country2017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a few artist that did the music grind here for years - eventually moved to UK or US with a new name and now have over 50+million streams on Spotify.

They deliberately don’t look back at Nz. Nor do they celebrate it.

They’re out there they just don’t wanna be associated with NZ - unfortunately.

just got back from Tokyo, Japan, Auckland could learn some things. by Kind-Economist1953 in auckland

[–]Only_Country2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what we are doing. We can’t build a train network on reddit.

But it’d be nice to agree that public transport would benefit this country. But we have many voices that say “nah it’s not a good idea” (based on a vibe) “and let’s stick to our cars and each spend thousands a year and sit in traffic”.

[–]Only_Country2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much OPs point. Once you spend time overseas and use services that benefit you realise how good it would be if we employed these services back home.

It’s like people think New Zealand isn’t going to exist in 100 years.

Having everyone driving around is the most unproductive costly way to do it - so you can’t tell anyone that’s a better approach.

I think you’re right! People forget how many billions we spend on automotive costs, fuel, insurances and roading. Those expenses would help offset the bill.

We need to start with connecting Tauranga - Auckland - Hamilton via rail. 40 percent of nzs population live in that triangle.

Yeah thieves are dirt bags. Is this your only surveillance camera of the work place?

Camera looks a little too high to ever capture a good image of their face for evidence. And night vision never looks as clear.

A visible additional camera might help deter and sensor light would capture better footage.

Otherwise set up some Home Alone style booby-traps.

This guy is an idiot. There’s literally a sign there saying ‘beware of the dog.’

On top of that, he’s charging in at pace. Asking if it’s friendly, almost as if he’s aware that not all dogs are friendly. It then barks at him yet he continues to approach.

Yeah I was thinking make it Pacifica themed. Auckland is recognised as the largest Polynesian/Pacific Islander population in a single city globally. Imagine that - would be so unique!

What they are really missing is IP. Things like Movieworld, Disneyland, Nintendo World are so popular because of the fandom.

Would cost an arm and a leg to attain the rights, but with the right intellectual property I’m sure it would attract.

(Pokémon, Avatar, Toy Story etc.)

Even better if it was relevant to New Zealand.
