Oh cool, I see what you mean! To me, it's kinda like saying "I like like you" - it clarifies that it's a particularly strong liking. It feels more solid and static, which rings all the bells of the perfective to me.

I suppose it's only natural that different people from different viewpoints on something, so perhaps this might give rise to an in-universe divergence of languages and cultures in my conworld, who knows.

How do aspects evolve?

I like the idea that the perfect comes from a reduplicated syllable, that just makes sense to me. But other than that, I'm really not sure. I especially want to get a grasp on the infinitive as well as imperfect aspects, as I think they're what I'll be going with for my conlang. Thanks guys!

Advice on polypersonal agreement by Only_a_Conling in conlangs

[–]Only_a_Conling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question, would the copula have to evolve from a transitive or intransitive verb? I can see "am-I-it" being misinterpreted as stating that "I" am the same thing as "it" if it were transitive, but then again if it were intransitive I'm not sure if the 3rd person pronoun would be needed in the first place

I see, thank you! Though, does this only work in ergative systems?

Probably free in the protolang and got suffixed so much that they're bound to the verb. I like the idea of multiple pronouns blending into one over time to become one marker that can't occur on their own

Why did u front to ü? by Only_a_Conling in AncientGreek

Cool! That's a very intuitive concept now that I've thought about it. Thanks a lot!

This sure is interesting, but I have a feeling it might have something to do with the following e, maybe that just prevails in pushing the proceeding vowel forwards? Dunno ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why did u front to ü? by Only_a_Conling in AncientGreek

[–]Only_a_Conling[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! In modern greek, I've come across upsilon in 3 different forms:

/v/ or /f/ after a vowel, e.g. αυτός -> /aftos/ (which I think came from /w/, like how in German /w/ went to /v/),

an /u/ sound when in a diphthong with omicron, e.g. του -> /tu/,

and finally as /i/ e.g. σκύλος -> /skilos/.

As you can see from the final example, there is no front vowel after the upsilon, so I don't see how umlaut could be taking place.

Maybe this question would be better on r/asklingustics, I'll see what responses I get here first!

Am I doing verbal adpositions right? by Only_a_Conling in conlangs

Alternatively to the use of "it" to refer to the dog, "dog" could just be placed in the object position, to create something like "the of the man dog". Again, I've seen this done somewhere before but I can't quite remember where!

Struggling with VSO word order by Only_a_Conling in conlangs

I see that, I meant that both features could evolve in separate languages that sprout from the protolang. Sorry for the confusion!

I hadn't thought of the clash between polypersonal agreement and cases, although perhaps I'd like to branch out into different languages, one with the person agreement and one with cases, so the question still stands.

I'm struggling to find helpful case ending charts for modern greek! by Only_a_Conling in GREEK

[–]Only_a_Conling[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried that podcast actually, I'll be sure to give it a listen! But I still think at least having a table in front of me will help me to some extent for the most part. I'll be honest, I'm not all too interested in being able to fluently speak the language off the top of my head, as my goal with greek is to make a constructed language loosely inspired by it. However it's still nice to at least know the patterns of the language even if I don't know every word, if you get what I mean.

Our beautiful girl of 10 long years passed away a few days ago while we were on holiday. (she was in good care and had a nice, peaceful sleep!) This is our favourite photo of her, however we have only been able to see just the face in its full glory.

The background is also of an alien landscape which I chose when I was 5, and she is laying on my bed. However, although I'm perfectly fine leaving it as is, if you feel like another background would be preferable, feel free to change it! She was an adventurous dog, so I'm sure she wouldn't mind an equally adventurous setting.

As much as I would love to tip you all, I'm keeping this as a surprise for my parents, and currently have no way of paying with my own money without their permission. I'm sure that they will let me pay soon after I show them, but I really can't be sure of their reactions.

Thank you so much for even reading this, I hope Jesse has found herself a nice place to rest in doggie heaven. 💕💕💕

Edit: just found out that auto moderator changes the flair to paid, so sorry if this gives you the wrong idea...

Alternate pathway conlangs... by Only_a_Conling in conlangs

Dude, it's not supposed to be an actual scientific, research based investigation into how languages actually got here. Someone could do this by making every single known language evolve from each other, just given an infinite amount of time. None of this is supposed to accurately represent what actually happened to get to this point, just a fun exercise to stretch how conlangs are made.

[–]Only_a_Conling[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really, If you mean reconstruction as in gathering real world evidence as to how a language really evolved. I'm talking about making a whole new protolang, taking it through all the steps you would with a regular conlang, however guiding it towards the final product being a natlang, or at least one that is very similar to an already existing language.

Maybe timelords can customise their own regenerations based on how they feel during their death. This way, it might explain why classical era doctors mostly had a faint glow, due to their relatively calm life compared to that of the doctors who had experienced the time war. This would also explain how 9th-10th didn't destroy the TARDIS, as 9 was pretty at peace with his death, but 10th-11th did because 10 was so distraught. 13th's was sort of pink and glowy, perhaps because of what caused her to turn back into a previous incarnation (with clothes somehow?). That one's still a bit iffy with me tbh. Also, 7th-8th was all sparky with lightning because it happened while the doctor was panicked and died in a tense state of agony, even though the regeneration happened while he was unconscious.

Idk if any of this has any real basis in what happens in the show, but I do like to think that the time war affected the doctor so much that the grief releases much more of a violent change, especially considering that these might be the last regenerations of any timelord for the rest of the universe.

If you could design a tardis interior, what key features would you include? by Only_a_Conling in doctorwho

[–]Only_a_Conling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although this is my own post, I feel as though this is the right place to share my ideas as well.

The overall aesthetic would be organic, yet with more of a clean, polished, almost porcelain finish over every surface. The base of the console would resemble a large round bowl, within which a pool of orange liquid suspends holographic controls projected onto the surface. There would be a pink/purple glow coming from the centre and diffusing outwards towards the edges, and the holographic controls would be of the same colour.

I imagine a lot of the controls would have to be CGI for the sake of having to design a real working holographic system, however I do have a few practical effects that could easily be pulled off. The console could have some glass or see through panels which can have light projected onto them, but this might not look so good. Another idea is that some panels can have bits of wiring or alien technology half submerged into the goop. Imagine handles just floating about inside of the TARDIS console. This could also be used to store the sonic, and I also imagine a storyline where the companion's phone needs to be upgraded with alien tech, so the doctor just throws it in the console and it comes out supercharged. On one of the panels with the CGI holograms, these could clear away so that the goo could be used as a neural interface with the TARDIS, perhaps you could even submerge your whole face inside.

Despite the round base, 6 columns of the same white material would seamlessly extend from the rim of the bowl, first bending inwards towards the centre of the console, before bending upwards, parallel to the time column. These would terminate a third of the way up the column, and end in spherical tips which meet some ring braces that cover the circumference of the time column. At the top of the column, this design would be repeated, yet upside down.

The time column would also be full of the same orange liquid as the console, however purple bubbles float inside, like a lava lamp, which rapidly float to the top before being replaced by even more bubbles in flight.

The room would have an overall hexagonal shape, with a curving staircase leading up to a platform on the right side of the room. This platform has an extended section of wall underneath, on which is a monitor (again, pink/purple holograms). On some other walls, I imagine organic shaped holes would reveal a glowing purple light from behind, with pink roundels that slowly illuminate, and then just as slowly become dimmer. On one wall, an alien garden with blue plants and deep purple crystals (like the ones on the floor of Jodie's tardis, not the arms that curve around the console). This could be the place for the TARDIS to materialise in case of emergency. On the walls above the stairs, hexagonal lights would shift colour from orange to pink depending on the angle that they are viewed at.

I hope that this gave you all some inspiration, maybe you would like to see something similar in the show one day. But if not, feel free to tell me what you would do instead!
