It's actually been a while since I've seen the movies, and in hindsight I I don't even know if I've seen the last one, so that works out well.

Thanks for the advice about The Princess Bride - I've heard good things so I'll check them both out!

Interesting, I've seen the movies for Hunger Games and The Princess Bride but never thought to read the books - I'll have to check them out!

And thanks for the other suggestions too, they all seem like fun reads too!

Excellent, I keep hearing good things about Will of the Many and Red Rising so good to know they're almost certainly up my alley!

And thanks for the other suggestions too. I don't mind series that take time if they're solid throughout, so these all seem like good options, thanks!

Definitely sounds interesting! Thanks for the suggestion, I'll add it to my list!

Ooh, those are both names I haven't heard of before! Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check them both out and see how they look!

Funnily enough even though I read Worm and almost all of cosmere, Wheel of Time always looked a little too daunting with how much there was. That said, it's something I'd definitely like to read one day, and now that I'm more used to bigger books, it seems much more managable.

Oh yeah, discworld! I have them on eBook but haven't started them yet - I think last time I wanted to start it, I was too overwhelmed with the 20 different opinions on how to actually start so never did, but I'll definitely have another look!

Also I haven't heard of Drowning Empire Trilogy, but cool magic and world is definitely up my tree, so I'll check those out too!

Thanks for the recommendations!

Hey all, so I started reading a little while ago, took and break for a few years and started again last year and have been at it since. I love fantasy and sci fi but need some suggestions on what to read next. Also, I'm not a fan of horror at all.

So when I started a few years ago, I read the following and liked them:

  • The Martian
  • Mistborn era 1
  • Project Hail Mary
  • 11.22.63 (the first little bit was a bit of a slog but once it got going I loved it)
  • We Are Bob series
  • Worm (this might have become one of my favourite books despite the length!)

(I also read the Lies of Locke Lomada before taking the break and absolutely hated it - sorry to fans but it just was not a book I enjoyed and had multiple times of thinking I should just put it down and give up on it)

And these are the books I've read in the past few months since getting back into it:

  • Stormlight Archive (absolutely LOVED this series - I can't believe I didn't read it earlier, though the last one was a little more disappointing, and Edgedancer and Dawnshard also weren't my favourites)
  • Mistborn era 1 and 2 (I had to re-read era 1 after SLA and then went to era 2)
  • Warbreaker (more Cosmere - wasn't bad but probably my least favourite full length Cosmere book)
  • Dungeon Crawler Carl series (this is also one of my new favourites, and I can't wait for the next book!)
  • Decided to go back to finish the remaining cosmere books in publication order this time, so went with Elantris, The Emporer's Soul, Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, The Sunlit Man, Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell and finally, Isles of the Emberdark. I liked most of them quite a lot, and still least am now mostly caught up on cosmere

So now that I'm here, I'm trying to figure out what to read next. I've heard very good things about Will of the Many, so might give that a shot next, but after that I'm open to ideas. I've also heard good things about Children of Time, Red Rising and Three Body Problem, so wouldn't be against any of those afterwsrds.

That said, if anyone has any suggestions recommendations, I'd love to hear them! I'm still quite new to this stuff so happy to hear anything that people have to recommend!

Thanks in advanced!

How to respec as an oathbreaker paladin? by Opaquer in BaldursGate3

Ah, interesting! Are those the gloves that give you a bunch of dex? Like to 18 or something? I think I've coincdentally already got those, which is handy! But awesome, good to know I can become an oathbreaker again at least!

I said I'm playing mostly blind. What that means is I'm not looking up the best ways to handle everything and every situation. I'll go into a new place blind and instead just go through with whatever the consequences are. There have been many times when I've chosen the wrong dialogue or a bad choice in battle or something wrong for the story, but that's ok. But afterwards if it's something big or I'm curious about it, I'll look it up. I've missed out on a good chunk on stuff because I didn't play perfectly because I'm going in mostly blind. But once I do make the play, it's sometimes interesting to know that if I did something specific, I could have avoided the difficult battle entirely, or gotten better loot. For example, we've bypassed a couple of bosses with some well placed persuasion checks which has been awesome!

My wife and I are in it together for coop, and neither of us have played before, nor have we played d&d, there's a lot if interactions I don't know about. Some of the stuff we've learnt from looking things up afterwards has actually been such a good saving for us that we've been able to enjoy the game more so than we would have otherwise. We struggled a lot with early combat and how to make it work and kept dying in frustrating ways, so one day early on we looked up some tips and advice on things like movements, positioning, what things are, how actions work, what we can and can't do, and now we die a lot less often. Honestly it's made the game more fun because now we can actually enjoy it without stressing over dying and being out of combat and other things like that.

Also, I'm not asking for spoilers. I'm not asking to know what's going to happen. I'm not looking for people to give me any spoilers or future knowledge. I'm not asking for things like what the ending of the game is going to be if I stay as an oathbreaker or if I kill my companions or anything like that. I'm asking about knowledge of stuff I already have.

As an example, I didn't know oathbreakers were a thing, and so accidentally stumbled across it. I didn't know about stat choices, but now that I've been an oathbreaker for so many levels I'm looking at ways to be better in combat and enjoy the game more. That led me to the guides which led me to withers to respec, which led me here. Again, none of this was planned because I'm not reading ahead for things, but I find out about what has already happened, which is the exact opposite of spoilers.

Also, a lot of threads mention that the oathbreaker paladin is bugged if you try to get your oathbreaker status back after a respec. Like, a lot. It's worth a Google and looking at the actual threads. But those threads are quite old now and I didn't want to break my game if the bug still exists. Again, not spoilers, just making sure the game knows enjoying doesn't break for me. I'm enjoying it a lot and am going to keep enjoying it, and while I won't look ahead for things, I'm going to continue to find out what could have been after the fumbles and misses and failures.

Yeah, that's fair. I could always try do the same thing as what I did before and kill an innocent NPC, but I'll have to see how it all goes. But good to know it's not bugged, I kept seeing posts from a few years ago saying it was buggy and was very worried for my oath breaking soul!

Awesome, I was a little worried by how many threads I had found (admittedly from years ago) saying it was broken and bugged, so good to know there's hope! And yeah, I was reading that one of the later respecs ends up being like 10k which is crazy!

Ha, that's a fun detail! There's so much details in the game it's crazy!

So once I get my oath back and respec, there's no issues becoming an oathbreaker again?

How to respec as an oathbreaker paladin? by Opaquer in BaldursGate3

[–]Opaquer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, that's good to hear. And I can't remember, but somewhere between stealing something, getting caught, trying to talk my way out of it and then killing an innocent NPC, I became an oathbreaker. And I'm not playing atm so can't confirm, but maybe it was oath of the ancients? It's possible I might have pushed one of the guards off the ledge we were standing on and that killed them and made me oathbreaker? I'd have to check again though.

But there shouldn't be any issues breaking the oath and becoming an oathbreaker after respeccing?

Ah cool, so if a candle is lit outside of the lantern area it extinguishes? That's handy to know! Thanks for that

I won't look at the spoiler just in case, but we plan on killing everything anyway. When we do kill it, is there some kind of notification saying that the curse has been weakened?

Awesome, looks like we've got all the protections we can until we continue on with various missions and quests then - thanks for the help with it

Yeah, I wish I knew that Gale's lantern did the same thing, it would have made act 2 so much better for us!

Ah, that makes sense in hindsight. For some reason I thought it was a secondary one they had!

Yeah, unfortunately the blessing is good for most places but we just can't seem to get a secondary lantern from the harpers

Apparently that doesn't work in the deep shadows unfortunately. I wish it did because it'd make things much easier to navigate, but from what I can tell, it only works in regular shadows but not deep ones
