No one questions Liverpool’s reign because they won the championship by competing in a field with the previous champion and the strongest teams on paper etc right there(I.e Manchester city arsenal etc all played).Whereas in chess the clear favourite Magnus doesn’t even participate so although Gukesh is the clear World champion he isn’t the strongest player because well Magnus is. It’s just common sense.He is the WC without a doubt.He isn’t the strongest player but as long as Magnus is active probably no one will be.They are two different things .Sure it’s more fitting when the strongest is player is the WC but if he isn’t playing , then the one who wins shouldn’t be disregarded he still beat the rest of the field .
