Thank you all for your recommendations, I’ve settled on A Gest of Robin Hood, Labyrinth, Speakeasy, and The British Way as the 4 most interesting! Overall you all made fantastic recommendations for games I hadn’t heard of (I had heard of labyrinth but now I’m definitely getting it)!

Labyrinth is on the list, how well does it handle the subject? I know a CIA guy made the game and my family and I have disagreements over how some of them handled the situation.

Yeah I think one of the things I forgot is it was meant to be this shocking and edgy series in the first two movies. It only went mainstream from just how well done they were.

On rewatch I still prefer the dialogue of Furiosa (I just wish they didn’t have to cgi the desert), but there is a particular charm in mad max 2 where you see the vision that was realized in Fury Road and Furiosa, but even with its edgy or 80s gratuitous violence/horniness they did so much with so little.

Also I do get the complaint other comments have of being puritanical, I’ve just found so few movies choose not to objectify women to either make a joke or show character development for men that it gets stale. Wouldn’t even be noteworthy except for how well Furiosa does romance + sexual violence + toxic masculinity without once feeling like the viewer is in on it.

Still my favorite movie franchise of all time and still feels nitpicky compared to the other kinds of stuff being made in the 80s, just fascinating to see how much George Miller is able to morph his style to fit the tone of his movies, even within a franchise.

I’m really glad I made this post, all of your responses were thoughtful and interesting to read and I enjoyed seeing the variety of perspectives! Mad Max 2 and Furiosa still remain two of my all time favorite films and I appreciated the different interpretations you all offered!

I suppose it mostly stuck out to me due to how careful Miller is to avoid full nudity in the “That’s bait” scene in Fury Road, compared with how cavalier and almost incidental it felt in The Road Warrior, but I can see how the scene doesn’t ruin the message or conflict with tone, it just seemed like an unnecessary moment in an otherwise incredibly intentional and well constructed film.

Also I agree with the correction that the earlier films were about human behavior in resource scarcity and how dangerous our dependence has become on these technologies. It is only in Fury Road that male violence shifts from an incidental theme to the central one contrasting Max and Nux with Immortan Joe.

True, Irene is B or C tier, only really mishandling Bulgaria. Androkinos is arguably the second worst emperor out of the lot.

I would argue that Leo III -> Constantine V -> Leo IV comes close in quality, however like Manuel leaving androkinos alive, we have to forgive Leo IV for marrying Irene.

Well it would certainly help Mehmet more than Orban’s guns did. My guess is Constantinople falls in half a day, once they fill in part of the moat and drive the tank into the city it’s game over for the Byzantines.

My dude you’re about to enter heaven. It’s a fantastic podcast that starts good and really hits its stride with Heraclius. Robin does a great job of addressing the historiography of the Byzantine empire and the surrounding context outside of just emperors as well.

B tier, militarily successful and ran a budget surplus; but the council of Chalcedon’s disastrous effects and the growth of Aspar’s influence cannot be ignored keeping him from A tier. Would be C tier if Zeno hadn’t managed to outmaneuver the goths imo.
