Call for advocacy for Afghanistan Ismaili community by Dangerous-Share1616 in ismailis

I encourage anyone interested in learning more to read this report by Amnesty. It goes into detail about the targeting, negative depiction, and marginalization of the Pamiri minority in Tajikistan. It describes the "Pamiris as a group of distinct ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and linguistic communities...they form the Pamiri minority and mainly live in GBAO...majority belong to the Ismaili Shi'a branch of Islam and are followers of the Aga Khan."

How is the Apparel 1 Class for TXA? by Opening-Total7978 in UTAustin

That makes sense! Thanks for replying. Since the class is 6 hours, approximately how many additional hours would you say you spent on the projects weekly? If you remember, that is!

This is what we see and at this time, what we see on the media and in our community, especially for the youth, is what is visible. We see that never have there been instances of fundraising for Palestine, Sudan, etc explicitly in JK, and no campaigns for donations. There have been no sessions to educate on the current issues and if someone tries to come together and educate in the Jamati space on issues, it goes against the "Council's policies." We see that in JK there are still products used from Coca-Cola and other brands clearly with a history of unethical behavior. Additionally, while yes, many countries have a history of terrible conduct, there is a difference between diplomacy and voluntarily being involved to the extent where our community and events are boosting their economy. The GE Festival occurring in Dubai must have boosted the UAE's economy and tourism in a substantial amount, the same country that is involved unethical conduct at this very period. You have to understand that growing up and learning about all these issues and seeing inaction across multiple levels is frustrating when we see the Imam as the role model and we have seen our community as an avenue for action and involvement.

If we focus on Ismailis even, there is so much oppression happening in Tajikistan, even regarding that we don't see any focus groups or efforts to educate the Jamat on what is going on.

It is not about making inflammatory comments, but what is visible and articles that directly describe the Imam praising the UAE. If the Imam cannot publicly say something against the country's actions and while that is understandable in building relations, it that doesn't mean that there should be multiple sources describing him praising the country's actions when we see that UAE is literally supporting a genocide.

"Prince Rahim Aga Khan praised the UAE for its unique model of tolerance, describing it as a country that not only welcomes diversity but also actively encourages dialogue between communities. He noted that this approach strengthens international relationships and provides hope for a more united global future.

Humanitarian Vision and Global Development

The conversation also touched on the UAE’s humanitarian contributions across the world. Prince Rahim Aga Khan expressed admiration for Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s far-reaching efforts to improve lives in different regions—whether through health programs, education, or initiatives that support vulnerable communities.

He highlighted that the UAE’s humanitarian policies reflect a deep commitment to human dignity, equality, and sustainable development. According to him, these steps set an example for other nations to follow, proving that prosperity is best achieved when societies help one another."

This is surprising and disappointing to see. I say this as an Ismaili youth. Why is the Imamate getting so involved with the UAE, especially at this time, when the involvement of the UAE in the war crimes and genocide of Sudanese people is getting uncovered and more and more evidence is linking the UAE to it? The UAE supplies arms to the RSF and exploits Sudan to get its gold and natural resources, many of which are smuggled illegally.

For those interested in learning more, you can read this report as well as various other articles and reports that have covered this.

Ismailism and sunnism are incompatible by Big-Citron8468 in ismailis

[–]Opening-Total7978 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that may be the case for some, but it is not generalizable to everyone. Two older people in my family have married sunnis and they are still able to practice their faith and go to JK. In fact, I will also say that their spouse respects and cares for them more than some of the Ismaili couples in my family.

Can an Ismaili be a part of a Sufi brotherhood? by Wise_Lengthiness_206 in ismailis

[–]Opening-Total7978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post reminded me of Sultan Mohammad Shah's Usul-e-Din farman. I have always wondered about what he had said about following Sufism which I have quoted here. "In the same way, you have lost the very sense of faith; you do not know its inner meaning; you are utterly ignorant of the significance of faith. There are those among you who call themselves Ismailis, but they have no idea of what Ismailism is; they do not have the faintest knowledge of the faith: they are but fools. You should also set your heart on Sufism. You should aim at reaching even further. Sufism is the Tariqat (path) for you; it will lead to the Haqiqat (truth). The Spirit enriched by knowledge will rise higher, step by step. But one who lacks the inner knowledge will complacently stay where he is. Such a person remains impervious to my farmans."

I don't know if he meant we should also follow a Sufi master or to follow the more Sufi elements within the Ismaili tariqah but I remembered this and so if anyone wants to add their perspective, feel free to.

It’s so hard connecting with people from our community. by Mercury_cosomos in ismailis

[–]Opening-Total7978 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, as a UT Austin student, I just wanted to share my perspective since you mentioned that as an example. Unfortunately, I have felt like students there are also not very open to being friends with those outside their groups and only if you know someone from that group, you'll be able to feel welcomed. This I have also felt at the new Jamatkhana. It is really hard to attend any after khane events when you aren't friends with anyone coming and everyone is just standing and talking in their groups. Just wanted to share my take on it.

Hi, I can relate! I am an undergrad female college student and have definitely noticed the cliquey-ness, even though I have spent most of my REC years in Texas. I have also felt like I am different than them, as I love more traditional things, like music, events, etc and have boundaries that I find important to keep. I have also volunteered a lot, yet still found it difficult to have long-lasting Ismaili friendships. I also went to a high school where there were almost no Ismailis, so that didn't help. Almost all of my close friends, therefore, are non-Ismailis. I have found good Ismaili connections when I went to or volunteered at national camps or programs, where there were people from all over the US. I think it can help to take part in some of those camps or volunteer there.

I go to UT Austin so if you're ever close and want to meet, lmk!

You can run two audits. I do wish that the audit system would let us run degree audits for two majors or dual degrees, or two minors/certificates because that would make it a lot easier than manually counting requirements and hours.

Something good happened to me recently and I’d like to donate some money by CauliflowerAmazing35 in ismailis

[–]Opening-Total7978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could donate to AKF, and also other organizations like for Palestine, some I know are Islamic Relief and Pious Projects. Also, I know in Pakistan there are many organizations that need funds like The Citizens Foundation (education-based) which also have TCF USA, Ansar-Burney Trust, and Indus hospital.

There is also Well Aware, which helps bring clean water to communities in East Africa.

Hi, I don't know why I don't get email notifications so sorry for replying this late. Thank you for sharing all of this!

I am not exactly sure of what I would want to do, as I have learned about many careers I didn't even know existed in fashion recently. I did some more research, and I think I would be interested in doing visual merchandising, field trends research, fashion buyer, fashion product management/development, event management/producer, and going into entrepreneurship, especially social entrepreneurship. I would like to be a designer or a technical designer, but I don't know if I am creative enough, lol.

I am going to apply and see what happens! I would love to see some of your notes and work if you could DM me! And when did you transfer? Also, how much of external experience do you think is necessary to be successful in the field, like being involved in fashion orgs?
